Recent Sets

As some of you may have noticed, we've recently changed the way the Recent Sets section works on our Explore page.

In the old system, as soon as you created or updated a set, it would show up on the Explore page. Many of you figured this out, and liked seeing your set on the Explore page so much, that you kept updating your sets, over and over again, and over again, and over again - to the point where it was pretty hard for anyone else to get onto the Explore page.

To fix this, and make Recent Sets a bit more representative, we've added some time in between the moment you create or edit your set, and the moment it actually shows up on the Explore page. So it won't show up right after you create or update your set, and, in fact, the more and more you update your set, the longer it will take for you to see it on the Explore page.

After we made this change, we started to get a lot of feedback, and some of you were not happy :-( Yikes! We're sorry! But in the end, we thought this would be a better way to make sure that the Recent Sets section won't get monopolized by update-crazy members. In the future, we want to enhance the Explore page so that different types of sets and members are featured - not just by just overall popularity or by recency, but perhaps for popularity within a certain theme, or a certain store, or maybe even within a certain color!

What would you like to see on the Explore page? Let us know...

I always thought a good idea would be to only allow one time on the "Recent Sets" page. That way, the system can't be abused and it wouldn't take an hour for the set to show up on the page (which I think is kind of...strange?). This would also encourage others to completely finish their sets before saving them.

Just an idea.

I absolutely agree with Liz...I like the idea of it only appearing once..and LOVE that polyvore finally changed the way that worked...the system was beiong totally abused with that obsessive reediting. But I believe it should change the way it appears on the members pages as well..maybe the system should be implemented to both? on the recent set pages and on your friends set page? :)

I'm happy about the change; I was getting pretty fed up with the obsessive re-editing of sets. I will also echo GabyG's question on whether the change can be carried over to the members' sets. I want to re-edit some of my old sets (I have 'perfectionist' issues, LOL) but I don't want them to be moved from their current position. :)

I love the suggestions, keep them coming! We'll definitely think about Recent Sets some more - how it works on Explore, Recent Sets page, as well as how it works on your member page. One thing we're hoping to launch soon is the ability to have a "draft" mode, so you can edit your set over several hours, or even days, before you make it public for the world to see. Once we have this available, making the set appear only once in the Recent Sets might make more sense :-)

GabyG said...

a draft is a phenomenal idea...that bunch of "not ready to show yet" is kind of funny..and it is quite annoying when we are working on smtg, and we have to close the window for one reason or another and loose it all..or have to publish before it is done :( great idea. I have another suggestion...can we have an option of "mark all" on the folder thing? if we want to change the name of the folder or move them, it is a pain to have to mark one by one :( Thank you for the prompt and sweet reply. nice to "meet" you

There should be somewhere on the site a "shuffle" option.
It will automatically redirect you to a set from somebody else when you click on it.

roXi said...

It would be ideal to have the option to 'Save as draft' and then a 'Submit' button once the sets are completed and ready to show. Also, maybe have a 'featured sets' category whereby sets a randomly chosen and not necessarily by popularity. This could be refreshed on a regularly basis. This would allow for a range of sets to be displayed particularly from new members where some sets go unnoticed.

GabyG said...

I agree with roxi...It would be very cool to see random sets. Or we could hit shuffle ..speaking of shuffle, would love a shuffle thing for the actual closet...It is boring to always have the same items appearing..would be cool to shuffle whenever we would like to :)
Now i came back because I got a message from my dear friend yazzy about my post here. What I meant with the "mark all" is when we are organizing items, and agging them. If we want to change the tags of a particular group, or remove a tag, we have to click on each single item. It is very long and tiresome ;)

hey, just to wish polyvore more success in the future! I've always thought that it would be great if polyvore had non- dressed mannequins so that users could put clothes on them to get a more realistic view. just an opinion! xx.

i love the idea of shuffling, and giving us control of that, so when we are exploring, we can choose to shuffle anytime and get a random grouping of sets. thats cool. i also would love to have control over the sequence of my sets. sometimes, if i'm telling a story with a series of sets, i want them to be in a particular order, and if one has to be updated, it messes that whole thing up. the only way i know of to fix that now is to use the edit function and re-order everything. very time-consuming.

Sarah said...

Great suggestions! I like the shuffle idea as well (thanks lauz!!) - I would love to do that. And thanks for your 'featured sets' idea Roxi, that's great. And trish, I agree it would be nice to be able to put your sets in an order, so we'll see about doing something like that (that would fix your problem of wanting to re-edit sets but not wanting their position changed, yazzy). And thanks gabyg, too, for the suggestion about tags, I figured that's what you meant!

Sarah said...

ra adrina - Check out this search I did for mannequins on Polyvore, you'll find some there!

trish moreno said...

which reminds, me, i also noticed that you removed the tag option from sets. was there a reason for that? i was using that feature but i think maybe alot of people weren't because they didn't understand the value of it.

GabyG said...

oh,yes, the option of tagging smtg straight from the editor was great...I was very disappointed when it was removed :(

I like the appearing once idea too, but I still think that it's good you have fixed this. I personally only update my sets if I want to change the name or tweak something in them, but I was getting pretty tired of seeing the same sets over and over and over! However, I do know that some people like to save their sets when they are not done, so maybe having the sets appear in Recent Sets only once is not a good idea. But a limit would be nice - for example, people could only have their set appear 5 times (although they could still edit it).

I JUST read the "Draft Mode" comment, and I think that's a great idea! :)

Another suggestion for the Explore page: Featured Members? There is a lot of undiscovered talent on Polyvore, so (like I have been doing for the Polyvore Press), it might be a cool idea to feature members with really good sets who don't get a lot of recognition (or just are very active). Kind of like on Trendiki, they have "Featured Fashionistas" and when someone is featured, they get a button for their page. Just a suggestion. But I do know how some people are turning Polyvore into a popularity contest, so this may cause some majorly unhealthly competition.

~*FABULOUS*~ said...

Oh yes - and about Contests. I love them, but I really don't like the Community Votes ones. They are very unfair, and not all of the entries get the same amount of consideration. I try to be fair when voting, but I know that most people only bother to look past the first 2 or 3 pages.

~*FABULOUS*~ said...

I have a question: I've noticed that some items uploaded by sites like Net-A-Porter have descriptions. Can other members do that too?

GabyG said...

I agree with you fabulous..on the contests..when I tried to vote on them before, I made sure to only vote after I saw all the sets, and then it was so hard to mark the ones that I liked to be able to get back to them..I added them to my favorites, and left a comment, on an effort to make it easier to find them, but even then, trying to find them back on the actual contest page was beyond labor intensive, and I finally gave up after voting for 2 contests. There has to be some better system to do that.. And I also think the sets for the contests should be anonymous, to make sure that the best sets have a chance and not the most "popular" ones.

YazzyYaz said...

I totally agree with the others on the contests; I tried to vote in a contest once but there were so many 'possibles', and no convenient way to get back to them. I got overwhelmed and never bothered to vote on another contest :(

I thought it's a great idea as I do update my sets occasionally, and seems wierd it ended up as a recent set. Also I noticed some sets keep popping up as recent even though they were done much earlier!

Wish list? A 'save as draft' function. Or else i will have sleepless nights updating on Polyvore!

Sarah said...

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm sorry I can't respond to each comment individually, but we're making notes of all of issues and ideas! If you have specific questions or problems, be sure to send us an email at "feedback at polyvore dot com"

Evangeline said...

hey! i have a question.... is it possible that the item limit could be changed? sometimes i am simply choosing "possible" items to use in my sets, when i cant add anymore. it would be so great if the limit would be increased! i know many people have problems with this! thanks :)

Bobette said...

I really like the idea of the "draft" mode. This would be extremely helpful and much appreciated! As for the contests that Polyvore holds, I totally agree with what ~*fabulous*~ said about the voting; it should not be by the Polyvore community. I have refused to vote in any of the contests and I also agree with everything gabyg and yazzyyaz have with regards to them. It is far too time consuming! With public voting, the sets with the most favourites tend to be the winners of the contests, so the most popular sets win over sets that may be just as good or even better but aren't as popular. It also seems like the same people win over and over. While I think a lot of the winners are extremely talented and make excellent sets I think there needs to be some kind of limit as to how many prizes you can take. I'd like to see the voting done only by the people who are sponsoring the contest.
BTW love the blog!

i totally agree with the suggestions of the drafts and the contests.
also i think the recent sets regulation is great.

what i would like to suggest is some kind of tagg to tell fashion sets and arty sets appart.

i think a lot do great collages and art stuff,
but i am more interested in the fashion set.

and to end just let me tell you that i love polyvore.
it saved a lot of rainy and darkgrey days this winter :)

Yes, I know that before I stayed up for HOURS working on a contest entry that I was really happy with, but then another set won. I also agree that most of the time, the set that wins is definitely not the best one. And some people have really great and creative entries, too! It's such a shame. Some people have won contests like 4 or 5 times, and that's not really fair. Although I completely loved the winning design for the most recent contest, I don't think that "public voting" is a good idea, just because people are biased, some members get more publicity, and it's really a matter of luck. If your set ends up on the first page more often than not, it will get more votes.

A-to-the-MEN! It got super annoying seeing people constantly updating a set that's been made awhile ago.

first of all, congrats for the blog! i've another suggestion: on the main page you can see some of the users but maybe it'd be better a list of all polyvore users and a link to his profile. i know there is toooo many people but maybe it can appear in alphabetical order, like in own page of our items... its only a suggestion :)

Laura_Denae said...

I would like to be able to rotate objects and add transparency so that layering would be easier. I would also like to be able to sort my items by color like the main page of items. Also, it would be neat to have a clipboard feature where we could set aside items that we want to use in a set while we are working on the set itself. I also think it would be cool to have a place on our profiles where our sets are ranged by popularity. I'd also love to learn more about the creators.

I need your help..someone is using the exact same nickname as me..gabyg...I don't even know how it is possible..shouldn't polyvore not allow the exact same nickname to be used? I sent a message to pv but did not receive a reply..could you please help me?

lulucool said...

i agree with everyone. it will be so nice if Draft and the GabyG ideas about contests really happend... but again i soooo agree with Laura too, i have more needs on the editor then on the site itself. rotate is that what i most miss there. and so will be nice when we can put texts (so we could upload the fonts maybe) hanm???

Hello everyone, it's my first time on this blog :) glad to "meet" you all on another site. First of all i am glad about the recent set change however i have also been reading other suggestions and I have to say i agree with the one about having your set shown on there once even if you re edit it again and again!

This Site steals work by artists from other websites without their permission.

Do Not Use It.

jessprkle said...

I find it disturbing that this site takes images of others' work, removes watermarks when there is one, and places it on the site without giving the artist credit.

This needs to stop ASAP.

polyvore and its users are in violation of copyright laws by stealing and using artist's work without their consent!

Oh I am doing such a happy dance! Hi to all my friends I see here!
I have loved Polyvore from the beginning. I have been away from my computer since Christmas time and so glad to see this blog! Gabyg your suggestions are awesome and Laura Deane from the beginning, I have been requesting the rotate and fonting and transparencies and have been dying for a save as draft thing as I need to reboot a lot or one of the kids runs the microwave which pops the fuse and I lose everything...lol, and the sort by color I have wished for and we all have reached the 50 items used and cuss it hahhaa.
I guess we all think alike sometimes! I thought I was the only one wanting so much in the editing area! I wish I could incorporate my PSP into Polyvore...hahaaa!
I sure hope we get some of the suggestions. I so agree on the recent set area change too.
Lots of great ideas here

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me.

I created a tag that I don't want. But it still shows up in my dropdown list of tags. How do I delete it???

I've tried deleting the images under the tag but the tag is still there.
