Clarification on Polyvore's Community Guidelines

Wow, we got over 60 comments on our blog post about the new Community Guidelines! Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to read the guidelines and give us feedback on them.

Most people have told us they think the rules are good ones, and are happy that we're making an effort to deal with mean-spirited behavior. We'll do our best to make sure that the policies are fair and that the Polyvore community stays positive and fun.

Some of you had questions about account deletion, copyright, and roleplay that we wanted to address --

Deleting people's accounts is the absolute last resort.
Deleting accounts makes us sad and we want to avoid it as much as possible. We would only delete an account in an extreme abuse case where someone is being intentionally malicious (for example, uploading a bunch of adult content) and has chosen to ignore multiple warnings about their behavior. We will always notify people beforehand and provide ample time to remedy the problem. We will not delete your account if you've accidentally used copyrighted content in your sets. Deleting accounts is something we take very seriously and we won't do it lightly.

A clarification about copyright issues.
Here's how we deal with copyright issues. If a copyright owner asks us to remove their work from Polyvore, we have to do it. We delete the copyrighted item and change all the sets that contain the item to be in a special "private" mode. This means the creator of the set can still see the set, but other people can't. We also send a notification to the set creator to let them know what happened. If you receive one of these notifications, just load your set into the editor and the copyrighted item will automatically disappear. Once you republish the set (minus the copyrighted item or replaced with something else), it will be taken out of "private" mode and everyone will be able to see it again.

Roleplay is allowed, but please keep it friendly and tasteful.
Fantasy and imagination go hand in hand with fashion and art, so it's fine if you want to roleplay on Polyvore. However, we are NOT cool with meanness, rude behavior, bullying, and roleplays that involve sex or violence. Please keep it friendly and tasteful. Groups and people that encourage, promote, or engage in inappropriate roleplay will be banned.

If you guys have other questions or feedback, let us know by leaving a comment!

I think that most of these new rules are awesome, I only have a problem with one. I was wondering about the personal photo page that I mentioned on my second post on the first Guidelines page on June 11, 2008 at 10:54 PM, I was not aware whenever I uploaded my photos that they became public property...but they are on here now and I don't want other people using them, because they have been claiming my daughter and husband to be theirs, and have even claimed to be me ( not only on rp profiles but claiming them in real life) It is an awful feeling to have someone do that to you. I was just wondering if ya'll could make a personal photo page or even let me have the chance to have ya'll delete them, because it is very disturbing when people do that, and it causes disruption in PV. I would love to have a personal photo page, so that I can move the photos of my family and I into it, because that is how I share my life and family photos with all my Poly friends! I would greatly appreciate it if ya'll thought more about this idea and I am sure that other's would too! Thankyou so much for the new rules, And I appreciate ya'll taking the time to read this!

polyvore, i think you need to put a link from the last guidelines post to the clarification post as people may miss it if they are coming from their polyvore homepage. just a suggestion :)

Thanks for your clarifications Polyvore, its good to know you've taking your time out to clarify this! Thanks for making this great site, its my fav ever.

Polyvore- Thank you for clarifying. I do have one question regarding the Child Protection Act, however. You have no place during the registration process that will make sure the person is 13 or older. If parents approve is it okay for kids younger than 13 to use Polyvore? I am in a situation where I don't want to go against your wishes, but also want to use Polyvore. Thank you!!

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! About everything! I am soo glad that you will give us several warnings about everything. And thank you soo much for not cutting into roleplays. I agree with banning if it's inappropriate, but I am gald you decided not to ban it all togehter. People need to leave roleplays alone if there not doing anything wrong. THANK YOU!

thank you so much for your clarification. I love the promotion of good conduct. Polyvore is awesome and will only become better. Thank you for your efforts with this amazing site. I do have one question though, what about tasteful nudity used for artistic expression? what are your feelings on this? Just curious. I don't think I've used nudity on any level in my sets, but I do appreciate tasteful artistic expression. Thanks for your feedback.

Okay, these rules are amazing, and I totally agree with them all. But I just have a question about the roleplay thing, you said there can't be anybody being mean to other people, I'm grateful for that rule, but does that mean that roleplay rivalries can't talk place? What's the limit here? Thanks a bunch!

I think the new rules are great, but one question...could there be any rules concerning people stealing set ideas? Recently on Polyvore, while browsing through sets I cam across one that was very similar to one of mine. This set was created several days ago, while mine was created 4 months ago!!!!! It feels as though someone is stealing my intellectual property... can something be done? When i posted a comment on the set confronting the person they sent me a message admitting they had stolen my idea!!!!!!! but nothing has been done since!

I have nothing to add, but I really appreciate how you listen and actually read the comments. Unlike a few sites, where your voice gets sucked into a black hole, never to be heard.

thanks for making these new rules ! i think they are totally right !

Anonymous said...

Yes, I agree. The rules have definatly cleared up my questions on copyright. Thank you! <3 you polyvore!

i totally agree with the rule about copying its getting ridiculous to the point where I'm saving my sets as drafts but not publishing them because i don't want people to steal the idea, but i still want to create them. I know that copying is a form of flattery but i want recognition for MY ideas.

it would be really nice if there was some way to make a print-able version of your set, i want to create a scrapbook and that would be PERFECT. thanks for hearing comments....

Hello! I just wanted to make a suggestion...Can we pass a rule that will allow us to have more than 50 items in one set? Please Consider!!! (:

I appreciate the polyvore staff taking the time to make all users aware of these updates rather than just the usual fine-print text at the bottom of a webpage that links to the policies. By putting the update alert in a place where all users are sure to see it is very proactive and shows that you all are very interested in keeping the use of the site within acceptable criteria.

I, like sassysweeet, would like to thank you for all the clarifications and for making polyvore a fun and safer place for everyone involved.

While I have been a regular Polyvore user, I was quite unaware of some of the other sides to the community here. Thanks for the clarification and the heads up. I use and recommend Polyvore on my blog, and keeping my own strong identity is vital to me and what I do.

I think all the new rules and guidelines are great - and very reasonable. I have a question, however, and that is how do you report a user that has been constantly commenting negatively and rudely on your sets for no apparent reason? Thank you!

Anonymous said...

These new rules will make polyvore an even better place. Thank you so much for making them!! I do think there is one more thing that needs to be addressed. I cannot tell you how many sets I have seen about people cutting themselves. Some are from the roleplays but some are not. The sets include pictures of slit wrists and blood. I know that art is about expressing yourself but I think this has gotten a little too graphic...

thanks..you guys made everything really clear!

ok. i totallly agree with this but you are missing A LOT of people who are using inappropriate pictures in their sets (porn, nudity, etc) please do something about this because it's disturbing to me and many others. THANKS!

i added a few of people who have been disturbing. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

I think that its great that you cleared some things u p but there is one more thing that a lot of us users are upset about. That is the 50 items per page rule. SOmetimes it is hard to make something really detailed with only 50 items! THere may be a reason for your policie and if there is you should let us know gbecuase there are a lot of people including me that want the rule to change. Thank you and I ♥ polyvore!

Anonymous said...

thank you for the clarifactions! I am really glad you made the role for roleplays, because roleplays can be fun, if done in a good way. I am glad you will bann the groups that do bad behaviors on roleplays, which bring down the roleplay groups. Thanks for caring enough to make these rules!

P.S. the group Gram Bell Prep has disobeyed these rules

Anonymous said...

thank you! finally a correct answer to our questions on roleplay. i agree. as long as the sets are decent, i dont mind it! there are kids on this site. keep it clean.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, but today, polyvore seems to be going insane. Is there anyways for you guys to fix it soon?

Anonymous said...

Thank you for clarifying questions! I absolutely agree with the new rules and am glad that you are making Polyvore more enjoyable. Keep up the good work! :]

The rules are helpful! Quick question about the deletion of copyrighted items... I have a set that sometimes can be seen, sometimes can't and I can't see it to come up to edit it. I'm unsure if any of the items have been deleted, ect. Is there a bug with some of the deletion of items or? Thanks.

Angel_Emz95 said...

Thankyou for all the clarifications! I do have one question though: Could it be possible to raise the limit of the 50 items rule? In some cases it is hard to be creative with this limit. Please consider the idea!

My account got suspended, and I really want it back soon. I love this sight and I can't make another email. And if I did, it would take me long to find all the items I used to have in my suspended account. Please unsuspend my account. I'd appreciate it. (I'm "stitchedlove11171" on Polyvore)

My Polyvore account (forida-rayman) has got suspended and I have no idea why? I haven't been malicious towards the website or the people who use this website. I have had no warnings about my behavior.
Will I get my account back sometime soon, do I have to e-mail Polyvore?

Hey...I was reading over your blog's guidelines about Polyvore. and I greatly appreciate the rules but I also understand that there a lot of children that under the age of 16 but I don't think it's exactly fair to limit what the older people post, you expect to treat the older members the same as if they're children. Myself and a few other people got our accounts deleted because of that rule. It's not fair, to lose everything that you worked to build. I know you want the site to family friendly but Polyvore should really have a section dedicated who do want go pass family friendly, Polyvore deleting accounts is not fair and you're taking away a lot of people's freedom to have fun and roleplay. And you can say, use tumblr to the several people who roleplay on your site and want to go beyond the pg rating. But there are a lot of Polyvore users who don't know how to use or even have a tumblr to roleplay on.
