Polyvore Community Guidelines

We want Polyvore be a fun, happy, safe place to hang out, so we've created some community guidelines to help explain what's okay and what's not.

When using Polyvore, you should:
  • Have fun! :)
  • Be creative and original
  • Share your sense of style and your artistic talent
  • Give people constructive feedback -- if you don't have anything nice or helpful to say, then don't say anything at all
  • Respect other people's views and beliefs

When using Polyvore, you should NOT:
  • Do NOT create adult content. No pornography, full frontal nudity, or sexually explicit language.
  • Do NOT promote violence or use hateful speech. No racist sets or comments.
  • Do NOT bully, harass, abuse, stalk, or threaten other people. No sets that are mean to other people.
  • Do NOT upload photos of other people without their permission.
  • Do NOT upload photos of yourself unless you are okay with other people using those photos. All items on Polyvore are considered public, meaning anybody else is free to use them. If you're not comfortable with this, then please don't upload your private pictures in the first place.
  • Do NOT create or upload content that infringes on any copyright, trademark, or patent.
  • Do NOT break any laws or participate in any illegal activities.

Sets and items that violate these rules will be deleted, and people who abuse Polyvore may have their accounts deleted. If you have inadvertently or accidentally created sets that violate Polyvore's guidelines, please try to delete them in the next 7 days. After that, we'll start to be more strict about deleting the accounts of people who are creating adult sets or who are being mean to people. If your set contains a copyrighted item and the copyright owner asks us to remove the item from Polyvore, you'll be given the opportunity to delete the item from your set or replace it with something else.

If you come across sets or items that violate the rules, you can report them by clicking the "Report abuse" link on item/set pages.

Thank you for being a member of the Polyvore community and for helping to keep it a fun and friendly place!

UPDATE: We posted some clarifications and updates in response to all your questions.

Hey Polyvore, I appericate how your encouraging others to be creative and be ORIGINAL AND NOT COPYING PEOPLES SETS! But with the don't create content that does copyright or whatever, some of us don't know if its copy right stuff or not and don't understand the legal side. So are you saying anything we are not sure about we have to delete from our creations? Some people might not know and might get their account deleted.

Thanks for making rules, I really appreciatte it. I think you should make a rule for "Roleplays" because a lot of those rules you've listed involves those.

This is very very resonable and something that everybody can and should follow!

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!!!!!!! it's gonna be so nice to have those in effect. I've had the misfortune of running into people being burned because of something really stupid. I've been in debates(which I'm now trying to avoid at all cost) and been burned.people can be really bratish on this site and I hate all the self-proclaimed "mature" people making nasty sets about folks, beliefs, races, weight, etc and abusing swear words. I really appreciate this.

I'm glad to have some guidelines which hopefully will eliminate the mean-spirited posts, and also the disturbingly violent sets which would be inappropriate for the younger members. But I would like to suggest that Polyvore contact the member regarding an offense, explain exactly what action is needed, and give that member the opportunity to correct it, instead of just deleting the account. Just arbitrarily deleting accounts would hurt innocent people who may have used copywrite-protected content in set creation without realizing it. People put a lot of time, a lot of heart and soul, into their sets. ~lilyk

Thank you for these new rules. Recently something like this happened to me where I used a picture that was in the mix of the ones that we could use and the girl got mad at me. I said I was sorry but she should not be putting her pictures on here if she does not want them to be used. Anyways it turned into something way bigger then it needed to be. My set was deleted because she repoted me for using her picture, and I was kind od upset because it was a set that I liked a lot. But, now I am glad that it happened like this so that nothing like this can happen to me again. Thank you polyvore for putting these rules into effect. I believe that it will make this site a better one to be on.

Thank you!

I remember, one person saying on a set that Polyvore does no censoring, so they can post whatever they want.

I guess that was both the freedom and flaw of Polyvore.

I agree to someone who said that some of us don't know if its copy right stuff or not(me neither), and how do we know?? By the way, I really appericate that you tell us to be ORIGINAL AND NOT COPY!!!. Becaues it really disturbed me and my friends to creat the new one without stealing idea even stealing items we saved to compose the set!

There are too many dont's. Unfortunately, this shows the agressive feelings and attitudes some people have. I feel good that these rules have been set and hope they're respected.

I like the rules but in some way they back track on themselves. If someone was to upload a picture of a person that didn't approve, then say I was to upload it not knowing. Then I could have the possibility of an angry stranger on my hands, if the photo is on Polyvore I am going to assume that it is as you put it: "now public property". this is just some thing to consider. Not to mention everyone gets offended by something be it colored hair, or politics. If people are reporting pictures that aren't actually bad do you personally check the set or just have it deleted by computer?

I feel that its a shame that people can't respect such a beautiful site full of fashion. It makes no sense for people to be rude toward one another when this was made for it to all be in fun. Its just crazy how people will do anything to bring the worst out of something good. but yes...

I am too glad that the "rules and regulations" of polyvore have been revised and enforced. Keep the updates coming polyvore guys!!!!
I love it, I love it, I love it!!

Thank you so much for this!
It really creeps me out that members use random photos of people from Photobucket and pretend to be them in roleplaying games. I know I'd feel weird if someone did that to me! I hope that this does something to stop it, but I doubt it will.

Thanks for making these rules! I think they are great, but I have one problem...I have already uploaded some my personal photos...is there anyway that you can delete them for me b/c I don't agree that people should be allowed to use my pesonal photos (claiming them or using them) without my consent! Please help me delete them. :( Thankyou!

Anonymous said...

thanks for these rules! do you think polyvore can help convince image providers to allow their pictures to be used here with appropriate credits? they get so much exposure here, it's another form of advertising and market research, really.

Anonymous said...

The rules are necessary, I've seen some pretty insane sh!t on some other people's sets. etc.

BUT, I think there should also be a rule restricting POSERS and IMPERSONATORS (those users who swear to be some celebrity and whatnot).

Just Be Original, Seriously.

Polyvore cud u consider givin people a chance && warnin them b4 u deleted their accounts cuz lyk some peps dunno they r breakin rules lyk copyright stuff

I was wondering if there was anyway that Polyvore could add a personal photo page to our profile (where we are the only ones allowed to use the photos that we have uploaded & put in that folder)...or something of the sort, b/c I have uploaded alot of my family photos innoscentley (not knowing people would claim to be me ect..) and now I can't delete them & I really don't want to delete them b/c that is how I share my life with my friends here on PV, I make sets using mine and my family's photos, but I think it's wrong that other people have a right to use my photos (that I have uploaded) without my permission! Why can they use them they are mine!...I did not know all of this when I uploaded them...Isn't there something ya'll can do to fix this problem?

Anonymous said...

about using another pic. thats quite unfair in my opinion. ): people go into roleplays to act out someone other than themselves. polyvore can be a getaway to some people and a chance to live the virtual life of someone else. roleplayers find it fun. they are just trying to make the internet reality in their eyes.

1. First of all, thank you for setting these guidelines. Although at its best, polyvore is such a creative marketplace for the brands to market innovatively, I think i'm speaking on behalf of many polyvorers when saying that the guidelines in terms of intellectual property rights are extremely vague and at this point are under the question of tarnishing brand image ( and people's right to presenting themselves) I'm recommending cooperation with brands , and it would only be fair to let them know that such a community as Polyvore exists and such use of their product material is exploited (in good and bad).
2. NOW what comes to individuals.. While knowing this might annoy some of the 'roleplayers' or those who want to include photos of themselves in their sets.. Is covering sets with amateur model photos of a pre-teen you really necessary? Everyone does have the right to express themselves, but you should understand that this is the Wild Wild Web and searching for your 15 minutes of fame just isn't the same as entering a real tv contest. You give billions of people unlimited access to your photos. The best question is to ask yourself before submitting any pictures of you: do I want some unknown person to jerk off to my photo on the other side of the world? (Sorry if this example insults some people but it's the same question my mom posed to me when I uploaded pics of me at the age of 15. I removed them pretty fast!) Besides, it seems to me like most of the uploaders are of age 13-16 (they are the ones most interested in uploading and yet the ones most vulnerable as they are still minors and most are naive to the terms of service they are immediately agreeing to)
Again, I recommend cooperation. Cooperation with DeviantArt, Vexels, Xanga, other art and portfolio sites, FaceBook, PhotoBucket, Flickr, Model agencies, Style.com etc etc to make agreements on what images can be saved from other sites with polyvore clipper . Most of the users in these sites are not aware that such a site as Polyvore exists and thus are unaware of the use of their pictures. This also goes for 'closed' sites, where you have to be a member to see others' photos, since other members can 'leak' your photo out from the community. You can't restrict everything since Web is so Wide but ignorance can be avoided by simple things- you're still responsible, Polyvore, because you're making deriving photos from other sites possible. And if it ain't so, make a statement about it . Since you know better about the copyrights (at least I hope so!), please inform us. That's at least your responsibility as the service provider.
Although we're all in for fun here, unfortunately not everyone logs in their brain too. And when it comes to other sites: I say it again: the Web is Wild and Wide: it doesn't work if all communities are closed and don't carry responsibility on extensions. It ain't called a web for no reason!
Thanks for making internet a safer place and doing your best in maintaining the goodwill to corporates and individuals!
Waiting for a yet clearer guideline on copyrights and cooperation!

Okay for those people who are saying to banish role palys, GET OVER IT! If you don't like them then don't pay attention to them. And don't download your pic on the internet if you don't want it in public. Maybe if you had common sense you would know that in the first place!

I think the new guidelines might be a bit harsh. I'm all for cleaning up just ill gotten trash, but I don't think that's really what goes on here. Most everyone I've come across is expressing themselves artistically. I specifically have a set that is questionable but everyone who has come to see it, loves it. They even asked that it be submitted to a contest, but I know from reading the guidelines that it MIGHT possibly be considered a violation. Trust me when I say that I am unsure. Anyhoo, I think instead of just INSTANTLY closing someone's account.... the offending set should be removed and the person sent a warning. If it continues then perhaps they need to be removed. Now, about the copyright. If I make a set with something I found on polyvore then I assume that it's okay, now if it's not and I'm in violation that cannot be my fault and I shouldn't have my account deleted. You yourselves say that once something is uploaded it is considered public. Well, we are all using the same items.... do I have to go and investigate every item on poly to make sure it's legit??? That seems a bit unreasonable. I know for fact that I once uploaded an item that contained nude breasts and I didn't realize till after I had it up. I reported it so it could be removed and opted not to use in the future but it's still up there. Now, if someone else has used it.... is it my fault or even theirs that it is still on poly when I tried to be decent enough to have it removed? I think not. Guidelines are great but we need to have some leeway in how account deletion is decided. I went through and deleted a couple of my sets yesterday, but ironically one of them was a much loved set by everyone who saw it, but it had a negative image. If someone really doesn't like a set........ as long as it doesn't contain porn of course......... then they should just not fave it and don't look at it. It's not hard to do. I think at this point we might almost be censoring creativity with the new rules. I think it needs to be dealt with on a case by case basis the way MANY other sites do. Thanks for listening.

I think Polyvore should do something about all of the role plays that are inappropriate. They should keep the ones that have appropriate content and delete the ones that don't. There is one role play called Playboy High and there motto is Drugs, Drinking, Sex, Gossip, and Lies. (Well, maybe it is not exactly that but it is very close to it.) It is a very inappropriate role play and I think it should delete it. I am sure a lot of other people would agree too. I also like the idea of making a feature where you can upload photos of you and your family without other people claiming to be you. Kind of like a feature that only allows you to use your own photos. I have nothing against role play, and I don't mind them using my pictures, but I don't like it when they use pictures of my family. It is sort of offending. THANKS FOR THE RULES POLYVORE!!!!!

I am glad that a blog author is reviewing these comments so we know that our ideas are being heard. In addition to my prior comment about giving a member a warning and an opportunity to correct any infractions rather than delete a set/account as the only action, I also totally agree with the post June 11 10:54PM who said "Polyvore could add a personal photo page to our profile (where we are the only ones allowed to use the photos that we have uploaded & put in that folder)." We should be able to choose the option of sharing an upload or keeping it in our own account folder only. It could be a check box on the upload that we have to click either 'share the file' or 'personal folder only'. And we can always change to share later.

I also suggest that while positive changes are being made to Polyvore community guidelines, also add some features that the members would appreciate:
1) remove the 50 item/set maximum or at least raise it to 100 items
2) remove the 5 group/set maximum or at least raise it to 10 groups
3) add an UNDO/REDO function on set creation
Raising the item limit will allow artists to publish creations that are complete rather than visually compromised. Raising the number of groups will help new groups to thrive -- the current limit forces members to choose so few groups, and since we want our sets to be seen, we typically choose the groups that are already established rather than the newer niche groups. And that is sad.

These two points are why the group FREE POLYVORE! was formed. I hear these 2 complaints echoed over and over by members in their posts.
The suggestion #3 is just something that will eliminate frustration when creating a set, such as when you accidentally move the wrong item, or you just want to undo the last addition, without having to first move 15 layers of precisely placed items that are now on top of it! I would ideally love to have a Layer Manager, as this will give artists control over what layer they are working in, so that changes can be made without disturbing the forward layers.

I don't know how to not post anonymous, so I'll just sign my polyvore name: lilyk

thank you really much for making these guidelines, they are just what most of us think polyvore should be like. however, i agree with some people here that maybe you could give us warnings or send a message about things we weren't supposed to use, because personally i don't really know how to tell if an image has copyrights or not either. instead of just deleting the person's account, it might be friendlier to give them a notice first. thanks for all the hard work on making polyvore a better place!!!

Ok, of course the 'roleplayers' aren't happy about this. They give all this crap about them not posting their pictures because of internet safety reasons?? But however, it IS safe to post and play a picture of some other young girl?? Those are just sorry excuses to use someone elses picture, if you DON'T want to use your OWN picture use an icon or something like that, DO NOT put another girl into danger with showing her pictures all over this website. I think the roleplayers should be suspended for a short period of time (only the ones to fake pictures) just to WARN them to ditch the fake pictures, it's sick and creepy.

Thanks for some of the rules. I agree with notifying us and giving us a time to close down our account. I also agree with Polyvore just deleting copyrighted pics because no one can tell if they are or not. But I hate people who hate roleplays, we can express ourselves in whichever way we want to. Also, Polyvore staff should just not get involved with the whold rolplay matter. I mean if there not doing anything wrong....than why bother?

Polyvore said...

The roleplaying is causing fights and it's just down right creepy. Girls are still uploading of pictures of who they want to be. It's disgusting and could get a lot of people into A LOT of trouble, no one likes a fake even if they ARE playing. As like other websites, I think Polyvore should suspend or ban their account for this. It's taking a toll on the site.

Hey polyvore, I think theses ideas are great except for the one about the pictures. You upload your pictures at your own risk : once their up here. anyone can use them now..they arent just yours anymore. So the thing about role plays has nothing to do with it, the people uploaded their pictures at their own risk, and others will use them as they want. So people shouldnt be complaining on how "roleplays" affect theses rules because really.. they dont. You upload your pictures. You use them, others use them. If you dont want people using your pictures DELETE THEM. Thank you! Enjoy

a webpage that says, for instance,
copyright 2005, does that mean I can copy it in 2008? Also, 9 West and Gala Darling have copyrights on their pages, yet they sponsor contests on Polyvore. I don't understand. Now, do I have to delete all my sets that use copyrighted material of any sort?

The people that are complaining about the little role play games, you are making this all ludacris. They say if you don't want your picture used then don't upload it on here, WE DON'T UPLOAD THEM ON HERE. You girls find them on sites (myspace, photobucket, tinypic) and upload them for us withOUT our permission. Again, people that are faking pictures and pretending to be someone else, just like every other website I think that account should be suspended or banned. It's taking a toll on the site and people are quitting because it's getting too childish and dramatic, not even fun anymore.

I agree about the content of Polyvore being rated PG, at worse, due to their ARE children on this site. I agree with copyrighting, due to someone worked hard to make something and need permission to use it. I agree with most of this. I have a problem with taking a picture of me or any of my family and using it to make a set then someone coming along and snatching it up, using it, per say, "this is me and my child, etc. That is WRONG! It is ME, not them, or MY FAMILY, and NO ONE else should be able to claim it as them. I have friends on here that I want to share my family with. If pictures are tagged PERSONAL USE ONLY, then NO ONE else should be able to use them, or claim them as themselves! Other than that isssue, this ia a great site! I have no problem saying who I am.

With all the mention of the word (and spirit) of Community, it disappoints me greatly that you, Polyvore, would segregate the community by allowing a contest (Nine West) that is open only to residents of the USA. In an online environment, the world is seamless. I do note Nine West's online shopping policy within the USA only. That doesn't excuse a poor decision on your part, and theirs, to isolate yourselves and present a poor 'global' image. For the coverage they are receiving, and a lousy $300 prize outlay, I would have thought they/you would be more globally pro-active.

THANK YOU Polyvore! LOVE you guys! and think that you are fabulous! I TOTALLY agree with you on "....if you can't say anything nice, just don't say it at all". This is a great rule of life that will never grow old. I think a few people might have slipped in that are too young to be handling an open forum such as this. THANK YOU for caring and posting some guidelines. HUGS!

Thanks Polyvore, I really like this site and it's sad to see that some people have to go and make it so that we need rules like these, but I don't think any of them are too harsh or over the line. Really, I would have thought most of these would be matters of common sense, but it seems that's a commodity that's hard to come by these days.
Now, I have to side with the people who would like the Roleplaying banned, or at least sectioned off or somehow gotten out of the way. I know how fun roleplays are, and I enjoy them myself from time to time, but polyvore is a place for fashion and art, not ongoing fantasies of a more intersting life. I know for a fact that there are many other sites with sections for roleplaying, so polyvore is not the only place to do it.

Thank you for considering,
s.e.

Hi, Polyvore, I think these rules are very useful. I was just wondering, why was my account suspended? I followed all of these rules, and never did anything to offend or harass anybody else. I used Polyvore for the fun and creativity. Can you please help me?

The flagging and deleting accounts has gotten WAY out of control. I didn't break any rules and my sets were being flagged and got deleted and there are people who are VERY disrespectful and never get their accounts deleted. Some people just flag other people on purpose. I think the deleting of the sets rule should be abolished especially since so many people put effort into their accounts and they have history and then its all wiped away because one person flagged a set they didn't like.

Hey,
It's an amazing name and I went on it all the time but my computer wasn't working so I had to get it fixed and it didn't get fixed for a while so then my account got suspended. What does that mean and will I ever be able to go on it again (on the same account I mean) because I had heaps of followers and heaps of likes and heaps and heaps on designs!! I really need someone to tell me!!!!!
Thanks,
Chels xx

Dear polyvore,
when I first joined polyvore it DID NOT ask for my age. Now when I have typed it in it is saying that I am NOT allowed to go on it - or hat my account has been SUSPENDED. Is there a time limit for these suspensions? I would really like y account back because this was one of my favourite websites that let me express myself. I hope my account doesn't get deleted permenately and I had no dea that you had to be over a certain amount of AGE to be on polyvore. I thought that anyone with a passion for art and fashion to be on this website. I think that if polyvore has a problem with age and they don't want "LITTLE KIDS" to go on polyvore then I think that polyvore should create an entry of age when FIRST creating an account and in my OPNION I think that this is absolutely not fair. Each week I had so much fun creating new styles and sets. Then today I went on plyvore and heard there was a contest which I entered and it said I had to type in an age. I typd in my age and then it logged me out and said that I was suspended. I just think that this is silly and polvore should do something to improve this because - as I have stated earlier - this was one of my favourite websites!
