Interview with sunnydays (aka Meg)

This is the second in our series of interviews with top Polyvore members.

sunnydays (aka Meg) is a 29 year old living in the San Francisco Bay Area who works for Pixar Animation Studios. She's also Polyvore rock star who has won a lot of contests during her 5 months on the site -- two 1st places, two 2nd places, and one 3rd place! Here are some of her winning sets.

1st place in the Intermix Online contest

Second place in the Adore Vintage contest

First place in the Gala Darling How to Wear Contest

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Meg and my user name is sunnydays (aka Meg). I'm 29 years old. I was born and raised in a small town in Southeast Missouri. I studied Archaeology, Film and Political Science in college at NYU and UC Berkeley. Now I live in San Francisco and I currently work in post production for a movie studio in the Bay Area (Pixar Animation Studios). I love my job and would love to keep contributing to the studio in the future. My aspirations also include eventually publishing, taking part in an archaeology dig in Mongolia and settling down with my fiance and starting a family. I have lived abroad in Sweden, New Zealand and Turkey for about three years. I have also lived and worked in New York and Los Angeles. I love classical music and instrumental movie soundtracks, including some tacky 80's music. My favorite movie scores would have to be from "Legends of the Fall" by James Horner and "The Village" by James Newton Howard. I love swimming and running 5K and 10K races for charitable causes, especially because I am a cancer survivor myself along with my mother. I am also a huge fan of sci-fi.

As for fashion, I love Valentino, Badgley Mischka and Elie Tahari.
My favorite handbags are from Isabella Fiore, Luella Bartley, Burberry, Hayden-Harnett, Louis Vuitton and Tod's!

How did you discover Polyvore?

I discovered Polyvore through the Polyvore Facebook application. I saw a little thumbnail of a gorgeous set on the Facebook app and felt compelled to check it out. It belonged to a wonderful member named :Oxia: who is such an amazing inspiration. I've been addicted ever since.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

I love Polyvore because it is a stress reliever and a creative outlet. Its so relaxing to sit and make a set. I have also started giving better gifts to my friends, as weird as that sounds. Polyvore has introduced me to tons of new boutiques with very unique items that my friends love. The friendships on Polyvore are really wonderful too. Just seeing all the amazing sets from other people helps me to be as creative as possible. It helps me look at things from an entirely different perspective.

Describe your set creation process.

When I make a set I try and start with a color combination. Colors can come from anywhere, a pair of shoes, a handbag, a top or a background. I like having at least three colors in my sets. I move on to my layout where I like balance and symmetry. If I use a color on the left, I have to put a splash of it on the right as well. Layering is very important too. I try and make sure my main outfit is always on or floating near the surface.

Where do you get inspiration for your sets?

I get a lot of inspiration from other members and I also get a lot of inspiration from locations like New York and San Francisco. Some of the items on Polyvore are really inspirational too, like an amazing clutch, pair of shoes or a sequin top. I really enjoy making sets for other members and the inspiration for that comes from the work of the members themselves. Specific contests also inspire me to work outside of my normal sets. Having a specific set of rules challenges me to think outside the box.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

A Fashion Conscious Archaeologist (love the artifacts; dinosaur, skull, world map...so me)

Intermix Online Global Chic Purple and Red (love the outfit and the layout)

Day at Galveston Bay (light blue is my favorite and this is a good memory set from a trip with my fiance)

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Would love to see more event features...maybe for fashion week or for birthdays. I love the wedding features.

I also would like to see a feature of perhaps one item (very unique bag or boots) that have been used in very different ways in 5 sets. I love to see how one item can spark such totally different and amazing sets.
