As many of you know, Polyvore.com was down for several hours yesterday. Our deepest apologies to everyone who was affected by the outage. We're very sorry and are working hard to make sure it doesn't happen again. We also want to thank the 195 people who left supportive comments on our blog while the site was down.
Here's what happened yesterday. Polyvore depends on a 3rd party web service called Amazon S3 to host our images. Amazon S3 is used by many websites to store files, including Twitter, SmugMug and many blogs.
Starting at about 9am Pacific time yesterday, Amazon S3 started to report significant errors. This affected all of Amazon S3's clients, including Polyvore. Since Polyvore is pretty much unusable without images, we decided it was best to take the site down. Unfortunately there wasn't much we could do besides wait for Amazon S3 to come back up. It came back online at about 5pm, and we turned Polyvore back on shortly afterwards.
Our team is currently exploring solutions that will allow Polyvore to stay up 100% of the time, even if Amazon S3 is down.
Once again, we're very sorry this happened and we hope you guys still come back to use the site.
