Tell us about yourself.
I'm a high school student from Manitoba, Canada, and I am a lot younger than most people think. For the most part, when I tell adults I go to school, they assume university or college. They get all shocked when I correct them! My major love is fashion and I am looking forward to graduating, so that I can finally move outta here and go to school in Toronto to become a fashion designer/stylist/photographer/whatever. I know I'll probably end up broke and living in a crap apartment or something, but hey, some people have dreams!
Describe your sense of style/fashion.
It's a bit hard for me to describe my personal style, because it changes a lot and because I mostly dress to what I can get my hands on. As a quasi-broke teen, it's hard to wear hot designer items, flashy "bling" and five inch shoes when a) I can't afford it b) my mother forbids internet shopping and c) it's impractical to wear heels to school. In the end, I would probably describe my *personal* style as crazy, flashy, quirky, colourful and LOUD. But in reality, based on what I can and can't wear, I would say my style is more muted, yet still colourful, ecclectic, and definitely ever-changing.
How did you discover Polyvore?
I didn't discover Polyvore through Facebook as a lot of users have. A friend of mine recommended it to me, actually. She said, "OH MY GOSH! You have gotta try out Polyvore, it's amaziiiiing!" So I did, and I was hooked!
Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.
I mostly use Polyvore as a creative outlet. It sounds really cheesy, but when you're a teenager with almost zero money, surrounded by peers who dress like clones and have a lot of time on your hands, it just makes sense! I mean, I create outfits that I like and stuff I'd like to wear because it's nice to imagine -- "What if I wore this to school?" "They'd all freak!" " "But who cares?"
It also really opened up my eyes to different styles and designers. Talk about inspirational! But the best thing I like about Polyvore is not just the endless possibilities, but the awesome admins! You guys rock for listening to us whine, and then considering our suggestions! No other site I know really does that :D
Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?
I get inspired by really random things! Sometimes I get inspired by crazy items like really rad shoes, or an awesome pair of leather pants or a funny quote from a movie and I'll go from there. But other times, I get an idea to do a theme like Austin Powers, or Charlie's Angels, and recently Alice in Wonderland, and I'll make a set about it. I always recreate the character or theme waaaaaaay more bad-ass though:) As if the character went through an HBT machine, ha!
What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?
Currently, I am in love with my Alice set. It's like my new baby! I worked really hard on giving her some more attitude and a certain 'I don't care' vibe.
"WE'RE HERE TO FUCK SHIT UP!" by HeyBigTrender
This is my second favourite set. I loved the theme and I'd love to wear this when I'm legal, LOL. It's just so bad-ass. I can imagine someone with a lot of attitude and personality wearing it.
"A Wise Monkey Never Monkeys With Another Monkey's Monkey!" by HeyBigTrender
My third fave set has gotta be my 'tourist' set. It was inspired by this really cheeky tee and I envisioned someone like Agyness Deyn rocking it. So I added some crazy shoes, a school girl blazer, and loads of jewellery.
"It's Tourist Season...Let's Go Shoot Some Mother Fuckerrrrsss!!!" by HeyBigTrender
Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?
Yes! I do! I'd really love to be able to have a colour pallette search like the ones we use to search for items, but for when we search OUR items. I also think it would be awesome if we had multiple tabs for when we search through our stuff, as well as being able to put in the number pages instead of waiting for the page to load via the arrows [editor's note: this is fixed now]. A rotate tool would also be nice. Please and thank you!
