Interview with MichelleMyBelle

Today's interview is with Polyvore member MichelleMyBelle, a 21-year-old mother of two from Canada. MichelleMyBelle has great taste in accessories and an impeccable sense of color coordination. Her sets never have any empty white spaces in them, because she fills every nook and cranny with gorgeous scarves, earrings, and necklaces! She also has a lot of contest wins under her belt, including two 1st places and one 12th place in the official contests.

1st place in the Eco Chic contest

12th place in the What to Wear to the Beach contest

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is Michelle! I'm twenty one years old and I live in Manitoba, Canada. I'm married and am currently a stay-at-home Mom with two young boys. I would like to someday pursue a career in advertising design and possibly enroll at the International Academy of Design & Technology (Toronto, Canada) in a few years.

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

Well, because I live in a small town it's hard to be fashion forward with out looking "weird". Curses. It's a shame really... I'm every eclectic and love vintage and bohemian pieces. I am addicted to scarves, big earrings and colorful purses. I love fedoras, a good flat and muted colors. You won't see anything florescent in my wardrobe!

How did you discover Polyvore?

I found it when I was looking at different applications on Facebook. It looked really interesting so I thought I'd see what it was about and now I LOVE it! Polyvore is by far my favorite site!

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

I pretty much use Polyvore to relax and have fun. I'm very artistic and I love that this site is another way for me to be creative in a completely different way. It allows me to show my fashion sense without having to cough up the money for the designer items in real life! :D

I love looking at different sets and talking with other users. It's really interesting to see someone else's style and try to figure it out and see what they're all about. Usually I get some new ideas for my own sets or incorporate them somehow into my own personal style. I really like when people comment on my sets as well, it's very flattering when people love your sets and it's always nice to hear good things about your work. Even constructive criticism is welcome, it gives me something to work on and improve on.

How much time do you spend on Polyvore per week?

Haha I don't know if I'm willing to divulge that information. I might embarrass myself...

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

My process is different every time. Quite often I'll see a really pretty and unique piece (whether it's shoes, a dress or whatever!) and then I'll find other pieces, inspired by that one item, and create a set. Sometimes I'll just choose a color and see what items come up and create something that way. I rarely create a set with a "theme" in mind unless I make a one for a contest or fellow Polyvore user. And usually, it isn't until the set is completely finished that I think of an appropriate title. I love putting song lyrics as titles for my sets because, to me, it's joining two creative elements together; and I'm usually inspired by songs above all else.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

That's almost as bad as asking which of my children I like best! Ummm...there are so many of them it might take awhile trying to decide! We'll see what I can do...

I love this set because it is very soft, flirty, feminine and has an antique feel to it. I love this style and I create quite a few 'antique' and vintage sets. As soon as I saw the bustier I was instantly drawn to it. It was just a coincidence that the skirt almost matched perfectly!

I'm really drawn to this set. I love the old-school-gangster-mafia vibe. I submitted this set in the "In Memory Of YSL" contest. Le Smoking, Baby! Hey, I tried, right?

Sigh. Ok. I did it... this is probably my FAVORITE set. *blushes* I LOVE it! I would wear this in a heart beat! I'm not a big 'color' person so that really appeals to me. I think every piece in this set is fabulous and the sweater is amazing! England is my dream vacation so that also helps too. :D I can just picture myself strutting around London wearing this outfit. Yep, it's by far my favorite!

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Polyvore is fabulous, I love it and the team is doing a great job! I really like that the contests aren't just open to people in the USA anymore. It gives all of us foreigners a chance too! Haha Keep up the good work you guys! Thanks for this site! XO

Faux Fur

The weather's probably cooling down in your city, but that's no reason to get sloppy. Be fashion-focused and animal-friendly this season with faux fur! Bundle up in a faux fur coat or a simple vest with some trim. It's a popular trend for the cold weather, with both romantic and bohemian influences. Don't want your faux fur to be a faux pas? Go for pieces that incorporate earthy tones like browns, mauves, and creams.

Thank You, Polyvorians!

Last week, we asked our bilingual and multilingual members to help us in the effort to localize Polyvore for members around the world. We're overwhelmed by the amazing response with the translation tool and are happy to share that, because of you, 100% of the Polish strings have been translated! In addition, German, Italian, Spanish and Croatian strings are well on they're way to being fully translated. A big thank you to all of our contributors! We look forward to launching localized versions of Polyvore soon!

We'd also like to send a huge 'Happy Birthday' shout out to the members of the Polyvore Forum! The forum, which celebrated it's 1-year anniversary this past weekend, was created and is administered by Miss Yujin and several other Polyvore members who share a love for all things Polyvore! With over 1,400 members, the forum hosts contests, discusses fashion and brings attention to undiscovered Polyvore members and sets. We love perusing the forum and invite all of you to visit and join the Polyvore Forum, too!

High Waisted Skirts

High waisted skirts do a great job of accentuating (or creating the illusion of!) an hourglass figure. If you're trying to create curves where there are none, we recommend a full skirt or an A-line. Just make sure to wear a form-fitting top, as a baggy shirt can make you look frumpy.

The simplest way to wear the trend is to take a plain white tank or t-shirt and tuck it in, then add colorful accessories.

If you're feeling more adventurous, try a fun fabric or print, like plaid, leather or pinstripe.

Or try a bright color, like yellow or purple. Cinch your waist with a belt to further enhance those curves!

What To Wear With Lace

This post is by guest blogger Bryn Taylor from SheFinds. Bryn writes regularly about fashion steals and deals on SheFinds, and was formerly a costume designer and stylist for magazines, runway, and film. (Please note that this post appeared on SheFinds first)

Seen most recently on the Emmys' red carpet, lace is one huge trend this fall. From dresses to blouses to the occasional frilly coat, the fabric formerly reserved for petticoats and lampshade trim is having its moment as the fashion it-kid. But how does one wear it without looking dated?

A black lace dress is pretty much a no-fail way to pull off the trend. The key to creating a modern look is to pair with modern accessories. A powerful cocktail ring and eclectic necklace will mix well with the old-fashioned lace. Slip on some black tights, and masculine black boots to rough up the dress. A simple, unfrilly black clutch will complement your accessories. And finally, opt for a bright overcoat that stands out against the black.

Miu Miu Princess Coat, $1320

Black Shell Minaudiere, $400

Black Agate Square Necklace, $175

Quartz Star Ring, $340

Darbey Boots, $300

You can also view this set right now on Polyvore where we welcome all of our readers to join the SheFinds Group and create your own sets, letting us know what you'd wear pair with this fall's lace.

How To Wear Blouses

You can play a blouse any way you'd like. Romantic and feminine, blouses look great in prints and solids, flattering any outfit. Dress up a pair of jeans or tuck yours in to a high-waisted skirt. It's the perfect day-to-night piece.

The Language of Fashion is Universal

Hola, Ciao and Hallo!

Polyvore has been a great success in the United States, but we also recognize that half of our visits actually come from outside of the US. In order to bring Polyvore to every country in the world, we've started working on internationalizing Polyvore. We want Polyvore to be available in every language -- after all, creativity in fashion has no international boundaries :)

In fact, the recently launched Polyvore Japan was our first leap into an international market and we hope to continue this trend in the coming months!

In order for us to localize Polyvore in a way that say, people from Italy, Brazil or Croatia like it, we've created a translation tool. This tool lets the Polyvore community (that's you!) submit the best translations of English words currently seen on the site. For example, we want you folks from France to choose how to say 'set' and you folks from Italy to let us know how to say 'Welcome! You are the latest member.'

You can start using our translation tool today. We're currently looking for translations in German, Japanese, Italian, French, Spanish, Polish and Croatian and will be adding more languages soon.

As always, we look forward to receiving your feedback!

Oxford Pumps

The menswear-inspired oxford shoe originated in Scotland and has been around for ages. This fall, you can find them in a variety of styles and heights. Feeling preppy? Pair them with a skirt or shorts and some knee socks. Night on the town? Oxford peep toe pumps look great with an evening dress. They can even make a simple pair of jeans look hot!
