In honor of Polyvore's 2nd birthday, we wanted to take a moment to recap the highlights of our second year of existence, as well as thank everyone in the Polyvore community for making the site so successful and so much fun for us to work on.
Traffic-wise, 2008 was a big year for Polyvore. We grew from about 500,000 unique visitors per month to 2.5 million unique visitors per month, an increase of 400%. We also crossed the 100 million monthly pageviews mark a few weeks ago. That makes Polyvore one of the biggest fashion destinations on the web, and certainly the largest user-generated fashion magazine out there!
We focused our efforts over the past year on building core features for the site, including groups, collections, the ability to add songs to your sets, more shopping-oriented features like buy buttons and prices, and better ways to browse Polyvore content, such as by trend and by brand. We also made infrastructure changes to help speed up the site, such as switching from managed hosting to running our own servers in a colo. All these changes have resulted in an increase in user engagement -- visitors to Polyvore now spend an average of 10 minutes on the site per session.
We also worked on some great business partnerships with fashion retailers and brands. We wanted to especially thank Charlotte Russe, Republic.co.uk, and PB Teen for integrating the Polyvore dressing room onto their websites, which led to us being featured in Internet Retailer in a recent article about e-commerce and social media. Thanks also to all our contest sponsors.
The Polyvore team has also grown from 4 people to 7. In case you've ever wondered who we are or what we look like, here's a picture of us. Everyone on our team used to work at either Google or Yahoo, where company logo t-shirts and socks-and-sandals were fairly standard garb. We'd like to think our fashion sense has improved thanks to Polyvore, but you can be the judge of that.
Another big change for us in 2008 was that we finally got our own office space (thank you to FriendFeed for letting us squat in your office for so long). We're located in downtown Mountain View, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our office is decorated with framed prints of our favorite Polyvore sets.
Last but not least, we wanted to thank the fabulous Polyvore community for all your support, feedback, and encouragement over the past year. Thank you so much for making so many beautiful sets, for telling your friends about Polyvore, for embedding sets on your blogs, and for sharing your feedback with us. Whether you're a fashionista, stylist, artist, or photographer, we hope you enjoy using Polyvore as a creative medium for self-expression. We love you guys!
Thanks for making our second year so great, and we look forward to you joining us in our third.
