Interview with ducktape

Today's interview is with ducktape, who first stumbled upon Polyvore a year ago. An aspiring fashion design student from California, ducktape is full of creativity and isn't afraid to try new things when creating her fashion sets. Her outfits are always a brave mixture of different textures and moods. She's even got a few contest wins to her name!

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

I am a 15-year-old sophomore from what's known as the armpit of California, and I'm determined to leave this pit as soon as I possibly can. Hopefully, when I do get around to moving far, far away, I'd like to attend art college for fashion design. In the meantime, I pass the days away by getting through high school, drawing, writing, listening to a lot of music, watching too many episodes of the X-Files and Project Runway, and spending way, way too much time on Polyvore.

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

Well, most of the time, my day-to-day style is nowhere near as exciting as my Polyvore sets, but there's definitely a similar essence...I enjoy mixing hard and soft-a little nothing tiered skirt with a suit jacket for example-and I LOVE jackets [like the way a lot of women LOVE shoes.]. Where I live, it's hot for over half the year, so I always long for fall so I can bundle up in amazing coats, cozy sweaters, and gorgeous boots again.

How did you discover Polyvore?

Through a group on Flickr! I was browsing recent forum posts, and someone had started a thread to see who was on this site called Polyvore. Curious, I clicked to check out what the heck a 'polyvore' was, and discovered this fabulous place. Ever since, I've spent a lot less time on

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

It's sort of like meditation, you know? After a long, intense school day, I can always rely on Polyvore to cheer me up and calm me down. It's also the best way to make a virtual wardrobe...before discovering Polyvore, I spent a good deal of time messing around with those cartoon dress up games, but always thought them too restricting and, well, juvenile. Polyvore is like a much more grown-up, much better substitute, and it allows for a lot more personal & artistic expression. Plus, this is one of the best communities on the entire internet, I'm sure!

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration
for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

Well, my most recent sets have all been for Orangurple's 50 Theme Challenge, so the inspiration has come from that. But otherwise, it usually starts with a single thing-a song, a picture, a quote, an original character, or an item I'm dying to use. And from there, I click through my own items to see what goes, arrange them, and then put in any necessary finishing touches. Sometimes though, I just pick items at near random, and they fall neatly into place. Annoyingly enough, these are some of my more popular sets!

I've done a lot of set 'series'-like one for each deadly sin, one for each month, one for each song on an album, ect. Especially some of my older sets were done like this

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

At first, I thought I knew, but now that I actually have to pick, this is an impossible request! Almost as bad as picking a favorite song...but, I'll try.

This set I adore-It just sort of worked, without having to try too hard, and I love the 'mood' of it...
My Epic Summertime Anthem

For pretty much the same reason as the last one, I'm in love with this set of mine. But, even more so than the last, I like the combination of clothes-because right now in my life, I'd never be able to wear such a thing!

And their Kids were Hippie chicks, all hypacrites.

I wanted to pick a set that is a little older [because I still love them too!] And I pick this one, from 9 months ago, because here shows a really strange combination of clothes that works in the weirdest way. And even though now I would've laid it out completely different, this is the essence of my style-at least my Polyvore style.

Garden of Serenity

I feel so disloyal to all my other loves! But, yeah, those'll have to be my 3.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Hmm...You guys are definitely doing a wonderful job, improving little things every day, and helping to make sure the community remains as friendly and diverse as it is. I've always dreamed of a rotation tool in the editor, but I'm content with that just being a nice dream. =D Otherwise, completely happy with the site-Keep it up!
