Today's interview is with ninghil. She discovered Polyvore through a fashion styling class in the Philippines and has been hooked ever since. The really cool thing about ninghil's sets is that she describes what each look is for and how it goes together, so be sure to check out her notes! Practical fashion advice, we like it.
Here are some of her sets:
Tell us about yourself.
Hi everyone! I'm Ning, 21, a college senior from Manila. What defines me most are the things that I love - Hip-hop, clothes, ice-cream, the beach and art. Hip-hop gets me into that zone that no other genre can. It makes me feel good like nothing else! I'm also a total sucker for the beach and it's just appropriate that I live in the Philippines. I get to go there whenever I like and I get to eat ice-cream all the time too! Of all the things that I love though, I would say that what I want to pursue is something related to fashion or the arts. Maybe both, if I get lucky! It's something that I can envision myself doing for the rest of my life, and being happy while doing so. :)
Describe your sense of style/fashion.
Comfort is probably the main aspect of my style. You should never sacrifice comfort just to look fashionable. Although I should say that I'm quite comfortable with just about anything. I pretty much go with safe choices for my outfits, which is probably why my closet is filled with black, white or grey pieces, but I would inject a bit of "interesting" every now and then. I've grown to experiment more with accessories and layers though. Living in a tropical country, I would always be in cool and light-weight outfits, like shorts, dresses and tank tops but what I love most about being in Manila is that I get to wear a bikini most of the time!
How did you discover Polyvore?
About 4 months ago, I enrolled myself in a Fashion Styling class and my classmates were all talking about Polyvore. Some of them who are already doing a bit of fashion styling said that Polyvore helped them with their "idea boards." It got me interested in checking it out and now I'm addicted!
Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do
you like about Polyvore?
Polyvore helps me express my love for fashion. I make fashion sets with outfits that I, myself, would want to wear. It's an amazing tool for people who want to think ahead and lay out their outfits before a big event or something. What's also great about Polyvore is that it's something that will never get old for me. It will never be boring 'cause new items would be added every now and then. Polyvore is also a way for people to maintain their impulse shopping by checking out the items first on the site and that would help alooot of people, including myself.
Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?
What I do first is to go "shopping" for striking pieces, like a pair of high heeled sandals or a flowy dress. Then I would work from there, once they're all in the My Items panel. For most of my sets, I just pick one item that would serve as the highlight of the set. For example, there's a top that I really like, I would use it as the main piece and go look for other items that would complement it. The theme would show itself in the process. Sometimes, though, I would have an outfit already in mind and then, that's when I go shopping for pieces. The process differs every now and then.
What are your favorite online stores to clip products from?
Topshop! It's both my favorite store to clip products from and to go buy for my own stuff. They have the best pieces! :)
What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?
Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?
A rotate button would be nice. I also think that a guestbook may be handy for the contacts to get to know more about each other and express their thoughts for others' sets, but I love Polyvore the way it is right now, too!
