Lately we've had a lot of Polyvore members writing in to submit hot new trends to our Trend Spotter series of blogs posts. For example, BigTrender pointed out that brogue shoes are in, Allie Baby noticed that fingerless gloves a la Lady Gaga are all the rage, and MyChanel noticed that denim shirts are making a comeback.
Because the Polyvore community is so great at spotting (and creating!) fashion trends, we've decided to make it an official part of the site. After all, our mission is to empower YOU, the community, to define what's hot. So today we're launching a new feature that lets you create & vote on new trends.
Here's how it works --
When you publish a set, you'll be asked to enter a list of trends that your set represents. For example, let's say your set is a bohemian look that includes fringe boots and a brown leather jacket. You should enter trends like "bohemian", "fringe boots", "brown leather jacket". As you type the name of a trend, we'll try to help you out by suggesting other trends that are already popular on Polyvore.

When other people view your set, they'll be asked to vote on the trends in your set. They'll see an open poll that says "Spot a Trend?" on the right hand side of the page. Other people can also suggest new trends. The 20 most popular trends will be shown in your poll.

Here's a closeup of what the voting interface looks like for the set shown above:

And here's what it looks like after the votes have been collected:
So start creating and voting for trends! This feature is new & experimental, so please help us make it work by using it a lot. If, after a few weeks, it seems to be working well, we're going to promote the trends you've spotted all over Polyvore on the homepage, blog, and Explore page!

OK I don't know much about trends but I do know about emotions. Who doesn't like shopping for shoes after getting your heart broken... And for August I say yellow is yummy...
Hmm... this is pretty cool! i agree, I wanted to submit a trend as well... but this actually let's the person seeing a set get involved. I like this experiment!
I'm super excited to have this new feature. I can't wait to get used to it. I'm sure it will benefit the site.

i don't understand.
CHECK OUT JLD525!!!

this is stupid
Thanks polyvore, this new feature looks really cool.
Thank you SO SO much Polyvore! l lovee it!
Thanks so much (= Forever & Always, Courtney
I miss the tags. It was a great way to see other sets that used that tag, a great way to meet new people on polyvore.
This is just stupid.
Thats cool :)
This is a great feature! I can't wait to get to use it! Thanks again for the great creation!

I really like the new feature, but I don't know much about trends. It's a very neat feature.
hmm, sounds cool... :)
This is a neat idea. Giving people a chance to give their opinion on what they think is in:)
thats a really good idea,so cool. i'll def use that
Im not really sure i understand!! it sounds cool though! --[mataytay♥]
This is cool!
Another fun thing to do on Polyvore :)
I'd still like to be able to put tags on my sets though! :(
Oh well, maybe I can just put them in the comments or something...
what happened to the 'load in editor' button when you're viewing an item not in editor? i like it because then you can use an item you've already saved, but you don't know where it is. please bring it back!
idk. I like how you vote and all, but don't add TOO many new features. You'll push polyvore over the top, and make it more of a forum or a myspace2, instead of a fashion set.
I personally don't love this new feature-I'm not really that sure how to (if there's even a way) remove trends from a set that other people have added. To me, it just feels like a way for sets to be vandalized easier and anonymously.
Also, it would be nice if an alert came up (like it does for faves and comments) when somebody adds a new trend to a set. It would make it easier to recognize if a set was being vandalized.
this is great! but what about the tags? they were very useful as well!
quite cool (:
I don`t like the new feature, I think it looks messy and I don`t think I`ll ever use it. To me it`s not about what`s trendy, it`s about what I like. I liked the way it was, when you could spot trends by making a collection.
I saw at AirFrance magazine, Malev board magazine or in a newspaper an article about Polyvore. I was really curious to check it!
Great website! Everybody has the chance now to play magazine editor and become a real trendsetter!
This sounds interesting and I'm willing to experiment. This new feature does not really work for my style of sets though. A lot of people don't make fashion sets. Some people make art sets and some make mosaics with like a million items in it (like me)! So there aren't really any trends for those sets. And I know a ton of people probably say this, but it's impossibly annoying to everybody on polyvore to have that stupid 50 item limit per set!!!!! Plz change that ASAP! Thanks...

i love it
Why we don't stay on the tags? And create separately this new option. I regret the tags, it's sad.
i prefer tags
I really like this ..Thanks Polyvore!
i prefer the tags to easily see other sets with similar themes. the voting thing seems to be a waste of time.
ahaa i love this idea, i think it's brilliant and will really benefit the site :)
xx
I agree with what Olga said. This feature will allow spam users to vandalize.
peersonally, i'm not so sure about this new feature. for some reason, when you publish a set and write lots of things in the notes box, you can only see a few lines when iti's published. There used to be a thing that said more, and you could click on it to see the rest of the text. Well now there isn't. Why??
The feature, i suppose is fine, but if you made the more button disappear, then can you please please please bring it back!!
This sounds good. Let's try it out...
Thank you Polyvore !! We love you !!
This sounds cool!
Thank you Polyvore! Youre the best!

great,love the new feature
I like this new feature because I'm always open to people looking at my sets and showing if they like them. This feature is a way for them to express their feelings about the trends in your sets.
this is a gr8 idea!!!!
i think it's really cool and gives Polyvore a little something extra
I agree with Olga (about the alert), but i think this is really cool. I can't wait to start using it! I think this is a good idea.
cool! i cant wait to try it out!
it's quite nice but i miss a tag.
it was a easy way to find people with similar taste
luv it. :D
Good idea but wats the purpose ?? The thing we really need is 50+ using objects so we can make even more amazing sets, we also need a place were people can get noticed cox some peope are amazing but get 6 favs at least... I think there is allot of potential in people but they need to get noticed to axcelirate that... I'm not complaining coz I love polyvore. :) xx
ehh. not the best feature. but thank you.
Awesome :)
I'm sure this new feature will be very helpful & seems like fun :D
Thanks Polyvore
xox
wicked!!!! though i thot the trend button thing when u published was already there. in fact it was there when signed up but i hardly ever use it.
This is cool, but I liked the tags better. It was easier to understand and find more sets that had to do with things you like.
I think it's a good idea, but I sort of miss just having tags. Like someone else said, it's interesting to see who else used those tags ...
people being able to add tags to other people's sets without notification to the creator is setting us up for abuse by the members who push hate to other members. we could have vile words attached to our sets and the only way to know it is to go back through every set we've ever made. mostly it's a decent community, but there are plenty of poeple in there who abuse other members.
WHY OH WHY? could it be free to choose do people want this trend-thing or just tags? please??
awesome new feature, i love it, and its a great idea. i know a lot about trends! (not bragging!!!) haha and i love this idea, its awesome :)
my advice to members is not to use the trends. anyone can write anything they want on your set, and you know what some ppl are like in here. if you don't use it, other ppl can't add to it
IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE ONES POLYVORE PRIVATE AND HAVE A FRIENDS ONLY CHOICE ?consly
I much prefered tags, where I could search for one thing or idea that I wanted to see represented in a set. If others were looking for something, they could find my set through a common tag.
I don't see the point in this, especially if people are just agreeing with the trend(s) that I obviously already know is there, since I made it a possible trend choice. And besides, not everyone uses this as a fashion website (even though it is carded as such.) What do us art people do?
this is cool, but isnt this just another popularity thing? whatever, its cool.
Love this so much! I can make outfits that I'm going to wear and see who likes them, and if they're going to start a trend!! I can't wait to publish a set!
I think this is a great idea. I wouldn't worry about people suggesting weird stuff... it only shows the 20 most popular..
awesome! but polyvore needs a crop and cartton button so you can crop the picture... and soo you can make your set a cartoon at the click of a button!
can u view who voted for what??????
The tags were so much better. I liked being able to see people who made sets similar to mine, please make tags available also.
Well I dont quite see the point of this..But whatever.

Now if POLYVORE could please fix my editor..Images wont show up in my 'saved items' tab or when I search for stuff in the editor...
Its been broken for weeks! And makes it difficult and fustrating to make sets.
Fix it Please.
Thanks in Advance.
this is awsome, i think it's great that polyvore is starting this trend setter thing, and its also great that people can have a say in it ! !
cool beans.(:
I think this appilcation is awesome because it will give you what people think your set is about. It is an awesome feature. It should definatly be kept.
Thank you so much Polyvore! I LOVE the "Spotting Trend Feature" Thank you!
♥
i love this idea! its fun!
I'd like to have the tags back because it was a great way to find sets and have your sets seen. Maybe there could be an option when publishing our sets where we can opt to just have tags as opposed to the trend voting. Honestly, the voting seems just a step above those puerile "hot or not" sites that are all over the web. And I don't like that other people could possibly abuse this by adding "trends" to our sets. Unless there's a change, I probably won't be using this feature.
But I would love if the list of "My Groups" on our profiles was alphabetized. Also, if there was a separate tab showing which of our groups are currently having contests, that would be wonderful.
Please, go back to the tags... it was fantastic to found other sets about our subject. Please, you can create the votes separately, for people who want receiving votes for an element or of them set...
I Love the idear! It is a great way to show and share trends with other people! I Like itLD
i dont really get this
I'm not too fond of the new trend spot thing.
I wanna have the TAGS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont't get it.
This isn't new, you're just making it seem new. Trends are just like tags.
Kewl. :D This will be rad. :D
"Anonymous said...

so, if i want to add tags, or trends, i have to add 20 of them so that if the abusers come in and write horrible trends or words, they won't show up?
seems easier not to use it. you've obviously never been ganged up on by someone who was mad at you for using some image they uploaded. people attack and get all their friends to attack, so I don't see why they won't abuse this.
If nothing else, I wish there was an choice whether or not to use trends or simply the tags. If we make art sets, there's no reason for trends, obviously, but tags would still be nice to use. Although the site is moving farther and farther away from those of us who make art sets, and I suspect art sets will eventually be a thing of the past. And even for fashion, it was great to tag a set "Jane Austen" or "Kate Winslet" or "Pretty Woman" and be able to see other sets like those. But I wouldn't call those trends exactly. It just seems an unnecessary change that adds to the popularity contests that already exist here.
luv this idea! sounds fun, im excited!
I like really really like the New trend spotting feature on polyvore. I think it was a great idea. =) I always catch myself tagging my items now. even if you guys tryed to do the "Trend feature" mostly all of us polyvore members, are finding are self tagging our items; which is a great MOVE for you guy. It keep us organized. Thanks EmilyLiz
this sounds kool! im excited to see how it works out!
i think you should keep the fringe boots suede sheos and skinny's jeans with the cuffle's jewlery i like it and i am all about fashion i just don't have a computer but if i did my outfits would be over a thousand like but umm what im trying to do is bring back what's not there that was there that's something different and im the outcast of you all just not on my level i know i have to improve myself but also improve this site with my interior designs by killing it... i just saw the announcement and im totally digging it...I WANT THE CHANGE YES YES WE CAN DO IT IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE IT'S A NEW MANILIUM......COMENT ME BACK ON MY PAGE AND VIEW THE OUTFITS AND SEND ME FRIEND REQUEST SO I CAN GET TO KNOW YOU POLYVORE'S BETTER AND WE CAN CREATE AND BLEND OUTFITS TOGETHER WITH OUR DESIGNS AND FUTURE MINDS...XOXO IT JASMINE'S DESIGNS.............
Well, this is awesome news. This is going to make polyvore rad.
I really really really dont get this. i dont see why we have to do it! i mean i guess its a good idea but i really have no idea about how to do this!! ;/
I really don't see what the point is but I'm glad you're thinking up new thigns to keep us polyvorians entertained.
This new feature is pointless and gimmicky. I honestly haven't seen anyone using it (voting on 'trends'). And like others have said I'm not crazy about how it invites people to 'edit' your set pages.
Please please please return to the tagging system- it is much more practical and makes more sense. I mean a person/work of art/emotion/place etcetera is not exactly a 'trend'. The trend feature is actually quite limiting in this respect. I won't be using it.
When can you replace the tags? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEreplace the tags, the votes may be an option, but the tags are essentials in ourt sets, we travelled in other sets with the tags! PLEASE PLEASE POLYVORE REPLACE THE TAGS.
