Interview with ♥hoℓℓywood‼

Today's interview is with ♥hoℓℓywood‼, who we first discovered when she placed 1st in our Fashion & Music contest last November. Though only 14-years old, hollywood definitely has a knack for styling! You'll also find many of her sets feature Polaroid pictures, which creates a vintage feel in her collages.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Holly and I'm fourteen years three months and seventeen days old. I live in a very boring suburb of Chicago where I attend a very boring junior high school as an eighth grader. Someday I hope to attend Harvard and become a cardiac surgeon, but until then, I'm stuck living my very boring life. I enjoy a variety of activities, from golf to miniature golf. Just kidding, haha. My main interests are fashion (obviously), theater and math. I'm just a little dork :]

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

My style is definitely very girly. I love skirts and ruffles and anything frilly, and I love the color pink! I would also say that my style is very simple, and definitely really preppy. I love accessories, especially necklaces and belts, except I outgrew all of my belts so my pants are always falling down!

How did you discover Polyvore?

I used to be obsessed with Yahoo! Answers. I was a top contributor in the fashion and accessories category, so Polyvore was a website that come up often.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

Without Polyvore, I don't know how I would survive! Fashion is such an important part of my life. When I can't get on Polyvore, I'm usually doodling outfits in the margins of my notebook, except I can't draw at all so they always look horrible! On Polyvore, I don't need to be a good artist to make a cute outfit! Plus, I can get so much inspiration from the other members.

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration
for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

I usually pick a random top or dress from my items, and the whole outfit will just come together. I'll just think, "This would look amazing with..." and I look for an item that somewhat matches the image in my mind.. My biggest source of inspiration is music. I almost always have a song stuck in my head, so my sets usually revolve around whatever song I'm thinking of at that moment. On the rare occasion that I do not have a song stuck in my head, I usually look at Polaroids for ideas. I absolutely love Polaroids!

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

Ack, that's very hard for me to answer!
I would have to say
41. because I love the color of the top and the awesome ruffles on the skirt!

beneath her smile is a frown is also one of my favorites because it came together so perfectly.

And how exciting. because it has gonzo in it, who is clearly amazing.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

I would love to be able to put a set in a collection while publishing a set, and a rotating tool but other then that, Polyvore is absolutely perfect :]

How To Wear a Heart Print Tank

Valentine's Day may have passed, but fashionistas still know how to show their hearts. The key to looking sophisticated with heart prints is to find pieces that are artistic, yet simple. This silk golden heart tank by Marc Jacobs is a popular pick on Polyvore and so we're highlighting ways to style it:

I absolutely love the draped skirt. The unstructured details create a mystery silhouette that is a great fit for any woman's body. They are a great focus piece for a simple outfit. They can bring just the right amount of drama. Here are some great examples of the draped skirt done right.

Interview with ❤✿PaintHead

Eye-popping neons and brights. Whimsical images. These are just a couple of ways to describe the work of ❤✿PaintHead. With a unique style of her own, PaintHead has built a name for herself here on Polyvore. Each of her creations sets a quirky and fun mood to tell a story. There's never a dull moment when you peek into PaintHead's world.

Here are some of her contest-winning sets:

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Jessie and I live in Philadelphia, City of Brotherly Love. I am an artist. I do freelance work like logos and murals and I also paint whenever I have time to. I have an Associate's Degree in Fine Arts, but will be returning back to school for Graphic Design or Fashion Marketing. My goal in life would be to eventually make layouts, logos for fashion designers, be a stylist for movies or work in a fashion magazine -- or why not start my own? Lol. I believe you can do anything your heart desires, and with hard work and passion you can get there. I also believe if you don't have money to do certain things, then teach yourself. There's always a way to get to where you want to.

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

My sense of style would be CRAZYYYYYY! LOL
The type of crazy were my own mom would be embarrassed to walk with me, lol. The best way to describe my style would be a mixture of new items sprinkled with some old items from the flea market, like a giant cupcake and I love vintage. I also love color and when I get dressed I think more of what color is missing, instead of what colors match. I think that way while making sets and when I paint, too.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I discovered Polyvore by Googling "candy buffet." I was planning my "candy" birthday party and wanted a big candy buffet. So while I was Googling, all these collages popped up. I looked at a few but never really paid any mind to it until a few weeks after my party. Again, I Googled "Besty Johnson" and I saw these collages again. I swear they were calling me, lol, because I then said "Let me check this out." I joined 8 months ago and have been here since. Now you're forever stuck with me.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

I use Polyvore to explore and be open to grow more artistically. Polyvore has been good for me to be able to bring forth all the things that roam in my head. It's very different from painting. With Polyvore, I can create a world full of randomness that makes sense to me, LOL, so maybe it's not random...just being normal.

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration
for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

I usually start a set with an item I see. Right away I know what I wanna do with it and it all flows after that. I look through my pages of items and see what calls out to me, to be part of the puzzle. Inspiration, to me, comes from anywhere. I can be walking down the street and see a sign, or a bottle cap on the floor, or even a bag of chips that I may be eating. Candy, cupcakes, a simple plate, a color combo I see in an ad. I am constantly seeing things as art. It's everywhere, we just have to see it.

I find my items by Googling, or on Polyvore. But one of my biggest inspirations is the model Doedeere, creator of Lime Crime make up. Her photographs are amazing and when I see a picture of her I see the set before I make it. Not the whole set, but the idea of it.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

WOW my three favorite sets...umm...

My number one favorite would be my black and white one just because at the time I made it my mind was in another place, so that's what came out.
Barely Hanging
Barely Hanging - by ❤✿PaintHead on Polyvore.com

Second is "BEcoming!" I like it because if there were a set I would jump into, it would be this one.
BEcoming!
BEcoming! - by ❤✿PaintHead on Polyvore.com

And third is "World of My Own!" because it full of color and life.
World of My Own!
World of My Own! - by ❤✿PaintHead on Polyvore.com

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Polyvore is great. Since I joined I have seen many great changes already, but it would be cool if we had a feedback/comment box in our groups, to communicate better with the members. OMG, see, now I can't stop lol. Another thing that would be cool is if we can somehow make our profile prettier with layouts, but in a way that it won't take away from the sets. What else? How about let us be able to add HTML codes in the comment section to see graphics...like send a cute little cupcake to someone. But that is it.

I just wanna thank everyone for being kind and sweet and coming by my sets. Hello to all my contacts, u all ROCK like Pop Rocks and thank you Polyvore for being great! Hugs!

How To Wear Gold Shoes

Flashy feet aren't just reserved for two-stepping the night away. Incorporate gold shoes into your day time looks, too! Think of gold as an alternative to beige or brown, and you'll find the possibilities are endless when styling your outfits. Matte and pale golds are best for daytime and look great with skinny jeans, cotton skirts and even denim shorts. If you want to be modest, choose a ballet flat or sandal. Interview with Maja Konestabo

Today's interview is with Maja Konestabo, who has been a Polyvore member for almost a year now! She's a fashion junkie and journalist from a small town in Croatia whose sets always feature a stunning pair of heels. She also likes to mix colors, patterns and textures which make for unique combinations.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Maja Konestabo. I'm 28 years old and live in Rijeka, a small town in Croatia. I work at our local TV station as fashion journalist and I have my own fashion show called "Journal." In that show I report about all fashion trends, fashion shows, models and trends.

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

I just love high heels so I wear them all the time I can. I also love dresses and jeans. But I can't say that I love just one style, like feminine or casual. My style is mix of everything and I just want to be different, and unexpected. Sometimes I wear jeans with converse and lot of accessories (scarfs, jewelry, shades) and sometimes I wear dressese with high heels and a clutch.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I'm a big fan of fashion blogs, and I read them every day. So I discovered Polyvore in a fashion blog a year ago, and now I am here every day.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

Like I mentioned before, I just love high heels, and can't help my self. They really are my fetish. So Polyvore is a place where I can enjoy many beautiful heels, and mix them with all the other great items. Polyvore is fairytale for me, a virtual closet where I can use all my fashion inspirations.

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration
for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

I find items that I like, and then start my creation process. But I never know where my inspiration will take me. Many times I start with one item, and then I find an item I like better than the first, so everything goes in different way.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

That is a really hard question.

This is a set I made ten months ago when I was a beginner here on Polyvore, but I think it is one of my best sets.

This is an unexpected combination and I would definitely wear this.

I'm a big fan of Sex and the City and Sarah Jessica Parker is one of my favorite actresses. I enjoy her outfits, so I created this one. I think that would be a great outfit for Carrie...and for me of course!

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Just keep your great work.

Back To Basics with James Perse Contest Winners

The Back To Basics contest with James Perse contest proved that nothing beats wardrobe basics that can be dressed up or down in many different ways. We received 3057 entries of fresh outfits inspired by James Perse's new spring line.

The folks over at James Perse chose 3 lucky winners to receive $500 worth of James Perse product. Talk about a shopping spree! A big congratulations to the winners:

Figure Flattery: Casual Wear for Pear Shape

Depending on your style, casual wear can refer to anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a skirt and wedge heels. So the best way to think about casual wear is to ask yourself, "What would I wear during the day or on the weekends?"

We've put together some collections in our Figure Flattery series to give you casual wear suggestions for a shopping day in the city, the movies or for a walk in the park. Here are some figure flattering outfits for the pear shape figure.

Pear Shape Figure

If you have a pear shape, or bottom-heavy figure, you should accentuate your shapely waist and delicate upper body. In general, you should avoid mini skirts, patterned or light pants, baggy tops, excessive detailing around the hip area (like big pockets) and anything too tight.

Many consider pants to be the essence of casual wear, so if you have a pear shape, you'll want to stick with pants or jeans that are either straight or boot cut. The slight flare at the ankle from a boot cut will help balance out your body's shape. If you're wearing jeans, go with a darker denim rinse or black for a slimming effect. Cotton a-line and full skirts that hit the knee area are also great for a casual look. An empire waist dress in a cotton/jersey blend would also be a good choice to relax in. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars are great necklines for you because they call attention to your face. If you feel like accessorizing, throw on a chunky necklace or long chain.

This is a great casual outfit. The a-line skirt is the perfect length, and the belt accentuates the waistline beautifully. You can wear the skirt higher up to create an empire-waist or right on the waistline. Even though it has a metallic sheen works, the canvas shoes relax this look for daytine wear. The slightly low neckline of this tank brings attention up to the face and away from bottom heaviness.

Here's a collection that highlights more casual looks for a pear shape figure:

DVF's Zaria Jacket Featured on MTV's The City

If you keep up with MTV's The City, you probably remember the Diane von Furstenberg look that Whitney (not Olivia!) pulled for Elle magazine's March 2009 cover with Jessica Alba. We're pretty confident that Polyvorians could have styled Jessica Alba for the cover shot, too! Check out these sets featuring the gorgeous floral DVF Zaria sequined jacket that was used for the Elle cover.

How would you style this DVF jacket?

How To Wear Tie-Dye

It's totally possible to wear tie-dye without looking like a hippie. The key is to stay clear of bright rainbow medleys and to pick pieces that blend complementary colors and patterns together. The outfits below mix tie-dye with non-boho pieces. Mix it up with preppy, rock and glam pieces and stay away from fringe and destroyed materials for a non-hippie look.

Guest Blog: Outfit Inspiration - Alphonse Mucha

This guest post is by Jael Paris, also known as Fashion Me Fabulous on Polyvore. Check out more of her daily posts on great trends and fashion goodies at the Fashion Me Fabulous blog.

Reader Rachel, wanted to see some looks inspired by different artists. I love this idea! I thought I'd start with Alphonse Mucha, a commercial artist and king of Art Nouveau.

This first look was inspired by the colors and art movement of the panel. The watercolor roses on the dress reflect the water of Mucha's scene, and the hat, earrings, and ring all harken to the 1920s.

The tucks and fold in the blouse inspired me to use ruffles all over this look. The poinsettias dictated my color choice, and the hair pins are direct from the woman in the illustration.

One thing I've always adored about Mucha's work is the detail of the jewelry. In this illustration, the back of a simple gown is adorned. For an evening look, wear a bold necklace down the back of your dress. Just make sure the clasp is pretty so it looks like you are wearing a choker from the front.

Any other artists who you would like to see interpreted through clothing?

Interview with ambersmithsonian

Today's interview is with ambersmithsonian, whose Polyvore layouts caught our eye out of sheer uniqueness. As you'll learn from her interview, her layout style changed after a dream she had that was inspired by Polyvore! Her sets are a funky collaboration of fashion, music and art components that are abstract and super fun.

Here are some of her earlier sets:

...and an example of her current style:

Tell us about yourself.

I am 25 and live in Cleveland, Ohio, but am originally from East Tennessee. I am an Event Coordinator who plans all kinds of parties. It sounds glamorous, but is actually quite not! At any given moment I can be found prowling vintage/thrift shops, dancing around at local shows or skimming the bins with my bf at independent record stores. Eventually, I would love to go on tour as a back-up singer/dancer for Leslie and the LYs!

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

I love to mix everything - colors, textures, patterns, vintage & modern. I also like to add unexpected bursts of color with shoes and/or accessories. I have to look pretty professional at work most of the time, but strive to make up for the mundane days with wilder fashion statements while exploring the music scene in Cleveland. Most of the time I can be seen in skinny pants, vintage sweaters and funky flats. I am also obsessed with reconstructed vintage jewelry and one-of-a-kind pieces.

How did you discover Polyvore?

About two months ago I accidentally stumbled upon Polyvore when I was online one night. I have no idea how i got there, but I swear I heard birds singing and the world made sense again! Now you will never get rid of me...

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why.

I use Polyvore because it is genius. It allows me to release some built up creativity. I have always been very artistic and I love to use various mediums. Polyvore is such an amazing way to quickly and efficiently create something beautiful. There are endless possibilities and inspirations. Polyvore has opened my eyes to a new world of viral art composed by a talented, global community and it's pretty damn amazing.

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration
for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

I build some sets around items that I love like a pair of shoes or a dress. For "night owl," I created the look around that terrific playsuit.

The lengthwise collection all started from a dream I had after I became obsessed with Polyvore. In the dream I met this group of people who were made up of the components from my items list. I woke up thinking of the rabbit mask and made "i heard you fell into a rabbit hole." I felt like I was Alice in Wonderland and had tripped out in a dream and woke up very different. I am not sure if I will deter from the lengthwise collection anytime soon.

Anyone who is familiar with my sets knows that a lot of my inspiration comes from music and song lyrics. I make it a point to incorporate these artists/songs into my sets. If I've recently been to a show, odds are that I've come home and made a set based on some hipster's haircut or how the drums made my feet move.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

This is my fave because somehow it only took ten or less minutes to make and it came together exactly as I had imagined. I compare all my other sets to this one because it seemed so effortless.

I love this set because every time I see it I smile.

I just love the attitude this gives off. In the back of my mind while I was making this one I was thinking of a soul singer who falls down the rabbit hole and is mistaken for Alice at the tea party.

Honorable mention...because I would kill for that outfit.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

I would love to see an iPhone app for Polyvore if there isn't one out there. I would also like to be able to organize my items into the regular groupings you have (shoes, dresses, tops). And it would be so great if there was the option at the top of drafts to rotate items left or right within sets. Keep up the amazing work - this is my favorite website ever!

How To Wear Beading

A little beading can add bohemian glamour to your look. Handbags, jewelry, and embellished clothing will give you a vintage-ethnic-hippie flair that is perfect for the spring! Choose neutral pieces to keep it earthy, or go with bold and bright beading for color and eye-catching texture.

Guest Blog: Military Inspired Looks

This guest post is by Jael Paris, also known as Fashion Me Fabulous on Polyvore. Check out more of her daily posts on great trends and fashion goodies at the Fashion Me Fabulous blog.

My father was in the Marines for four years, and emerged very picky about his clothes. His focus was tailoring, but when I think military looks, I think of buttons, epaulets, piping, gold trim, and a very specific color scheme.

It could be my bias, but Marine dress uniforms are my favorite. If you can find a dark jacket (black is preferred but navy will work) with red trim, all you need to complete the look is white pants. I went with flat boots and a basic black bag, but you can fem it up with stilettos and a clutch. The globe necklace is a reference to the Marine symbol.

This outfit uses the greens and browns of fatigues, but my major focus was buttons. I used the chevron bangle to recall medals.

Branch out from modern American military and think about the finery of European officers from one or two hundred years ago. This look uses the red and blue, but I picked ivory over white to symbolize an old flag. The jacket, with all it's regal braiding, was the focal point.

Of course, you can really turn the buttoned up military look on it's head with proper tattering and mussy hair. The more I worked on making each item a military reversal -- tight, torn jeans; guns as earrings; a tough as nails evening bag; fetishized boots -- the more the look moved from military to rock star. Of course, turning things around and thumbing their noses at authority is standard rock star behavior.

How To Wear a Tulip Skirt

Warm weather is almost within reach, so today's post is inspired by the tulip skirt. Tulip skirts have more fabric around the hips than pencil skirts, but have a nice tapered hemline, giving them the shape of an inverted tulip. They look good on most figures, but specifically slender figures, since the extra fabric tends to add extra bulk around the hips. Have fun with these skirts by choosing bright spring colors and mixing in belts for added flavor!

Figure Flattery: Workwear for Apple Shape Figures

Our last Figure Flattery series on workwear discusses suggested looks for apple shape figures.

Apple Shape Figure

If you are top-heavy, you're considered to have an apple shape, so you'll want to accentuate your great legs! Avoid tight bottoms like pencil skirts and skintight jeans. Also, stay away from full and puffy sleeves as these all emphasize top-heaviness.

You can create more of an hourglass look with an a-line skirt for work. Shorter skirts are also more suitable for apple shape figures. Choose tops and sweaters with v-necks, boatnecks and shirt collars. Pants with pockets are most flattering, so don't be afraid of five pockets!

The outfit above is an excellent example of a business casual outfit for an apple shape figure. The skirt is not too tight, and is short enough to show off your legs without being an inappropriate length for the office. The neckline on both the blouse and the coat are perfect. This is a great spring look, but if you add some tights to this ensemble and you can pull this off for the winter, as well.

Here's a collection that highlights a few more looks for an apple shape figure:

Love animals? Here's a way to show it, cruelty-free! These printed tees actually have drawings of your favorite animals from tigers to giraffes to peacocks. They go great under cardigans and blazers or paired with basic skirts or black leggings. Figure Flattery: Workwear for Boyish Figures

Our Figure Flattery series on workwear continues with featured looks for boyish/skinny figures.

Boyish Figure

Skinny figures are often referred to as boyish, so you'll want to wear clothing that will create the illusion of curves, even if they're not there. Avoid shirts with very short sleeves that accentuate skinny arms and flared mini skirts.

Pencil skirts, balloon skirts, slim pants and tight-fitting wrap dresses are most flattering for slender figures. You can also create bulk by layering vests over shirts and dresses over pants. Extra details like ruffles, pleats and gathers will also make your body appear curvier.

The outfit above is great because the pencil skirt looks great on a slim figure. The black band at the top of the skirt creates the illusion of a belt and will help accentuate a waistline. A bow blouse gives that extra bulk and detail and looks perfect alone or layered with a fitted vest. Heels will elongate your great legs even more and give you a polished office-appropriate look.

Cocktail Party Roleplay Contest Winners

Maria's journey continues with her new job in LA...

She made a great impression at her interview, and Capitol Records hired her as an Events Coordinator! Her first work event is an album release party for recording artist J. Holiday. The party is at a trendy LA lounge and the dress code is cocktail attire. If you were Maria, what would you wear to the big event?

And here are the winning sets:

Figure Flattery: Workwear for Pear Shape Figures

If you work in a more traditional office environment, you may be required to dress in business casual attire everyday. Just because you can't wear jeans or bright leggings to work doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style!

While it may be easy to style your work wardrobe, it's important to understand that what works for one body type may not work for another. So, we've put together some collections in our Figure Flattery series to give you business casual suggestions for three common body types: pear shape, boyish/skinny and apple shape. We'll kick the series off by highlighting the pear shape figure:

Pear Shape Figure

If you have a pear shape, or bottom-heavy figure, you should accentuate your shapely waist and delicate upper body. In general, you should avoid mini skirts, patterned or light pants, baggy tops, excessive detailing around the hip area (like big pockets) and anything too tight.

A-line and full skirts that hit the knee area are key to a flattering work look. Empire waist dresses are also very flattering and belts can be used over simple dresses to achieve this look, as well. If you're wearing pants, choose a straight or boot cut to balance out your body. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars are great necklines for you because they call attention to your face. You should accessorize your look with chunky necklaces or long chains.

The ensemble above works because the full skirt creates a great fit and flare combination. A fitted blazer will perfect a business casual look. Just be sure that the hemline does not hit the widest part of your hips -- it should hit right above. Layer a fitted shirt (not a tank top) underneath in case it gets warm and you decide to take the blazer off.

Here's a collection that highlights more great looks for a pear shape figure:

Guest Blog: Spring Trend 2009: Harem Pants

This guest blog was written by Fashion Without Guilt, a 24-year old fashion fanatic and bargain shopper. She discovered Polyvore on someone's MySpace page 8 months ago and has been a fan since. Be sure to check out her blog, Fashion Without Guilt, which is all about affordable fashion!

Hammertime is back. The loose fitting pant is definitely the trend of the season. This is a great alternative to the everyday jean. The loose drapery of the fabric can make this style very difficult to wear.

Pairing Harem Pants with structured pieces is a great way to go. Blazers and cardigans are a great foundation pieces.

Very dramatic footwear is a great way to give your look a bit of personal flair. Deciding on which platform heel, ankle boot, or gladiator sandal are some examples of creating a unique look of your own.

Here are just some examples of how the Harem Pant is done right.
