Rotate! (and an update on profile pages)

Wow it's been a busy month here at Polyvore! Today we're pleased to announce the launch of the Polyvore community's #1 most requested feature -- the rotate tool.

Rotate!!!!!
Rotate!!!!! by Polyvore featuring Thakoon dresses

When you add an item to the editor, you should see a small circle at the top of the item that you can grab to rotate the item.
Please make sure you are using a newer browser (Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3.5+, Google Chrome 3.0, or Safari 3.1+), otherwise the rotate tool won't work. If you're not sure what browser you're using, go here to find out. If you need to upgrade your browser, go to GetFirefox.com to download Firefox 3.5 or go here to download the latest version of Internet Explorer.

As always, let us know what you think by leaving your feedback here on the blog. If you find any bugs, please report them to us in the comments. Make sure to include your browser/operating system information, plus step-by-step instructions for how to reproduce the problem.

Speaking of feedback, we want everyone in the Polyvore community to know that your feedback is super important to us. You guys are what makes the site so great, so we pay close attention to your comments and try to make changes based on your suggestions.

Yesterday we debuted a new profile page layout, to mixed reactions. We realize it's a big change that takes some getting used to, but we'd like to ask everyone to please try it out for a few days to see if it grows on you.

In the meantime, we've made some changes to try to address some of the most common complaints --

Many of you said the favorites were too big and dominate the page, so the favorites are now smaller. It's much clearer which sets are yours and which are faves. You can also completely remove faves by going into your profile settings.

Some of you asked for the Organizer link back, so we added it to the Links section. Also, your profile description now displays line breaks correctly.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the rotate tool!

Love,
The Polyvore Team

P.S. You can follow us on Twitter here.

Guest Blog: Don't Skirt the Issues

This guest post was written by Jennifer and Melissa of Workchic.com. Workchic helps dress women for work by offering suggested outfits, fit guidelines, tips and tricks on how to look professional, feminine and chic. Check out the Workchic blog for tips and trends!

Having a great neutral skirt in your basic work wardrobe is important. Notice we didn't say black, this skirt should be in a solid color that will mix and match into your existing closet. Some neutral colors to consider are tan, brown, navy, charcoal, and of course black. We have discussed in other blog posts the best skirts to fit your figure. You should also consider the types of tops you have on hand when you pick out your basic. To get you inspired we have put together some outfits.

We went with a pencil skirt for a black option and glamed it up with an asymmetrical ruffled cardigan. All these pieces were found at Jcrew and have a soft yet structured feel. Ruffles continue into peep toe pumps while pleats update a slouchy bag. The look is finished off with jeweled earrings and necklace. From basic black skirt to Hollywood glam perfect for the office.

For a true neutral we found a taupe A-line skirt with soft pleats and belted waist. Tuck in a simple knit top and layer on the accessories. The tapestry necklace nicely offsets crystal and bronze bracelet and flats. Plus details on handbag and wallet continue to update this casual outfit.

To achieve a soft and feminine look try a navy skirt and lavender tied neck cardigan. We hid a graphic tee underneath for a quick change in the evening. Ballet inspired pumps are a unique twist along with Victorian enameled pocket watch. None of which we consider basic, but grounding the look with a simple skirt makes the other pieces stand out.

Stay tuned to learn more about updating your basics and keeping your work wardrobe fresh with Workchic.com.

Go Pink!

Fashion for a cure.
Fashion isn't just about what we wear or how we wear it. It's also a form of expression and communication. Since 1992, wearing a pink ribbon has become a symbol of awareness to the fight against breast cancer. And with October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many designers and brands have released special edition pink products, where proceeds are donated directly to breast cancer research.

Join us in the fight against Breast Cancer!
What if you could channel your creativity into standing up for a cause? Many of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and so in their honor and in support of breast cancer research we’re asking you to create an inspiration set dedicated to the fight using at least one breast cancer awareness item.

Get started now by visiting the Go Pink! contest page. We'll also be featuring sets daily on our Facebook Fan Page and on Twitter throughout the contest!

Trend Spotter: Blue Suede Shoes

ahava spotted a Blue Suede Shoe trend on Polyvore. Elvis Presley said it best, "You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes!" At first you may be a little weary of the idea of blue shoes, but they are a great piece for the fall and actually go well with a lot of different emsembles. Feeling a little loud? Go for electric blue. But if you like your neutrals, midnight blue is a perfect compromise. As you can see, Christina Aguilera loves her blue suede Christian Louboutin heels!

Interview with dianelynn

Today's interview is with dianelynn. Dianelynn is a wonderful reminder of how Polyvore appeals to all, regardless of age :) She recently wrote into us and her background sparked our curiosity, so we asked her to share with us more about herself, her style and what she loves about Polyvore.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

I live in the United States, in Pittsburgh, PA. I just turned fifty years old last week. Most of my career, I have been a personal trainer, group exercise and Pilates instructor. I was also a dancer and model when I was in my teens and throughout my twenties, and taught ballroom dancing. I recently began school to become a nail technician since injuries preclude me from doing my current profession any longer. So, now, instead of a owning a gym someday, I now hope to own a gym/day spa!!

Describe your sense of style/fashion.

I lean toward classic clothing. Simple, fitted clothes with clean lines suit me best. I was told when modeling that finding your “look” is an essential part of style; knowing what works for you. Once you find it, stick with it as your “base”, adding the trends as they apply and only if they are appropriate for you. I adore shoes and boots and simply love scarves to complete an ensemble.

Are there any particular fashion trends that you've been seeing people wear in Pittsburgh lately?

Platforms are big here, as well as the bob haircut. We are always behind the latest styles in Pittsburgh.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I was directed to it from the InStyle website. I was hooked IMMEDIATELY!! I flipped through hundreds and hundreds of sets that first night.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do you like about Polyvore?

I am a clothes hound. I devour fashion magazines and always have. I love the entire industry. Clothes, hair, makeup…I love it all. I could never afford the beautiful creations I put together. This site allows me to play dress up and shop without spending money! I explore different looks than I would wear in real life. But there is so much more here to discover. It isn't only the extraordinary creativity, or the wealth of beautiful clothes we get to choose from to make our sets. It is such a nurturing, positive environment. I have rarely, if ever, seen such a supportive population. Everyone is upbeat and the faves are encouraging and stimulating. It creates a fostering and safe place to play out your dreams of fashion and expression. I have made friends from all over the world and been allowed to see their visions. I have learned of other cultures. Another beauty of this is that age has no relevancy here! I have spoken to young women of eleven to young women of seventy five! I have unleashed a creative streak held long dormant and I keep getting better and better! It's so much fun! I, for one, see it extending into other areas of my life; when I'm buying clothes or even decorating a room now.

Describe your set creation process. Where do you get inspiration for your sets? How do you pick a theme? How do you find your items?

My inspiration comes from my imagination. Many of my sets are things I would love to wear. Much of it is the exact opposite; things I CAN’T wear and can play with in the editor. Colors, shapes, a great dress, an outstanding bag; I just poke around and whatever catches my attention that day begins the process. I often start with just the color. You’ll notice many sets in black and white, for example. I love black and white.

What are your favorite designers and brands you like to clip products from?

My brother built my computer and it won’t allow the clipper! But my favorite designers are Ralph Lauren for my own clothes, and Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin and Balmain for my sets. I also adore modelmayhem.com for backgrounds.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

Because I would so wear it...

Because I would LOVE to wear it and can’t...

Because I just think it’s a gorgeous outfit...

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

None I can think of.

Introducing the Custom Background Tool!

We know that a lot of your favorite online stores shoot their product images on models, and so sometimes it might be a little tricky for you to create fashion sets just the way you like. Wouldn't it be great to pull the product off the model, just like in a store? Well now you can! We're excited to present you with our latest editor feature: the custom background tool. This tool lets you crop models, mannequins and hangers out of product images.

We used a Black Halo dress from shopbop.com to show you how the custom background tool works:

When creating a set in the editor, select the 'Custom' option from the 'Background' drop down menu.

Once you click on 'Custom,' you'll see a pop-up screen like the one below. Within this pop-up, you can start plotting points around the product you want to extract from the background. When you're done, click 'OK.'

And viola! Here's the finished product:

UPDATE:
Thanks to all of your great feedback, we added another feature to the custom background tool that lets you to choose from previously cropped versions of an item. That way, you don't have to re-crop an item and duplicate your work.

We hope you like the new custom background tool! As always, we love hearing your feedback, so leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Guest Blog: Go-To Black Shoes

This guest post was written by Jennifer and Melissa of Workchic.com. Workchic helps dress women for work by offering suggested outfits, fit guidelines, tips and tricks on how to look professional, feminine and chic. Check out the Workchic blog for tips and trends!

As we discuss updating your basics, one area we must touch on is black shoes. After a little shopping this weekend we were very inspired to discuss the subject. Depending on your lifestyle, this may be a ballet flat or a 3" stiletto. In our book it's one of each. To show you how simply these can work into your office attire, we put together three Workchic looks. You may even see some of our other recommended basics worked into the mix.

In a business professional office, a suit is your key look. We love to accessorize simple silhouettes and generally feel shoes are a great way to do it. But, if you work in a more traditional office environment or are going to a meeting with a more conservative group of clients; this is not the time to pull out those burgundy peep toe pumps. Having go-to black shoes will be very important. We also went with simple earrings and a fairly classic watch to keep the overall effect polished, professional, and sophisticated.

Business Casual is the most common office dress code. Here the lines get hazy, but we still love having a great black shoe on hand. We found a wool brocade skirt and paired it with a loose turtleneck sweater. Add a belt to pull the look together. Either peep-toe pumps or knotted ballet flats will look chic with this ensemble.

For a more casual day in the office. Pair flare leg denim with a chunky wrap front cardigan and t-shirt. Here we played a little more with your black shoes. Ballet flats have a tie at the toe and peep-toe booties are a big trend for fall. While these may not be as basic, you’ll still find them to be very versatile.

Any of these styles will easily update your wardrobe and make getting dressed in the morning that much simpler. While we had fun looking at different styles and creating outfits on Polyvore, these shoes really are a basic. You may be tempted to pick them up in red, silver, or a fun animal print- today let's stick to the basics. Make sure you have this area covered and then start shopping for the extras.

Trend Spotter: Velvet

EtchaSketchinLola spotted a Velvet trend on Polyvore. From Marc Jacobs to Fendi, the A/W 09/10 runways were lush with velvet. It may seem like a flashback from the 80s, but the rich sophistication this fabric exudes femininity and the look this season is far from frumpy. You can take velvet pieces from day to night. Whether it's the trim on a blazer or a cocktail dress, even a touch of velvet will make you look and feel like a million bucks.

kαтiε εℓizαbεтн spotted a Beret and Beanie trend on Polyvore. Tip your hat to this trend, because even when it's not so cold outside, these headwear pieces are the perfect accessory. Knit and felt beanies and berets are nice and cozy, and they look great embellished with sequins and bows, too. They've made their way to the runways, as seen at Burberry's Autumn/Winter runway show.
