Changes to Groups

Groups are a very important part of the Polyvore community. They're a great way to explore cool themes, meet people who share the same interests as you, and find fun contests. Whether you're Gossip Girl-obsessed, fascinated by paper dolls, or want to attempt the 50 Muse Challenge, there's a group for you!

As part of our effort to improve groups, we spent some time analyzing what makes groups successful. What we learned is that the most successful groups are the ones that stay active, are well-moderated and have a specific focus. So to help promote groups that do a good job of this, we're making three key changes to groups:

1. Invitation Only/By Application Groups
To help encourage active groups, we've added a new option that allows group moderators to make their groups invite-only, by application, or open to all. We added invite-only and by application because we noticed that some groups were using auditions & tryouts to screen for members who would stay active and engaged.

2. Moderating/Creating Groups
Another thing we noticed is that people who are very active on Polyvore tend to be the best moderators. So another change we've made that you must have at least 30 people following you as a contact in order to create or moderate groups.

3. Cleanup of Old, Inactive Groups
The last change we're making is to clean up the old, inactive groups on Polyvore. Last week we began notifying moderators of groups that have had no activity in the last 30 days that their groups would be deactivated. The most common piece of feedback was "Thank you, I had been wanting to get rid of that group but couldn't figure out how!" However, some of you thought that 30 days of inactivity was too short of a time period since moderators may go on vacation or have seasonal groups. So going forward, only groups that have had no activity in the last 2 months will be deactivated. If you receive a notification and you want your group to remain active, all you have to do is submit a set or create a contest in your group.

We hope these changes will make it easier for you to moderate your groups as well find interesting groups for you to join! As always, feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts or suggestions.

What counts as 'No Activity'? I have a group where I don't make many announcements, due to it being more of a silent group, but the newest set is 14 hours old.

Thanks so much!! This will make groups a lot more easier to moderate and enter!

I think this is great, however, when one creates a group then receives a notice two days later that the group will be closed when you have not had time to advertise, etc, it is quite disheartening. I am very active daily, and it was crushing when I created a group the day before and was notified the next day it would be closed. I imagine it is computer generated, still....

Thank you soo much Polyvore! Love the new change!

it says that you gave us 30 days notice. but i got only 7 days notice.

sounds great! i think this was a really good change! The only change that i havn't liked that you have made is changing "Favorites" into "Likes" everyone still calls them favs, so there is like no point!

sounds fair to me but im getting a feeling newbies might find it hard to get into groups cos well they are new. and if people started to invite others they would have to get permission of the moderators which means the moderators will have a lot of emails.....good luck to them....no more changes please by the way, i luv poly the way it is now....thanks for all the great work thought!!!!

Great changes - I don't want to see my groups shut down but it is easy to keep them active so all is good with that. Not sure a following of 30 contacts is really enough for moderators but it is a good start. Perhaps a time limit - as in all moderators have to have been members here for a year? Even six months would help to weed out fly-by-nights.

Interesting. I'm so far liking the new changes to Polyvore.

Great! I hate seeing inactive groups, thanks Polvore.

Yeah!!! Oh and another thing...how do you remove moderators??? Like if the person is never going to go on Polyvore anymore and they are apart of a group...how do you remove them?

Thank you for extending the days of inactivity! I love all the new changes and I am curious to see what people do with their groups!

Cool, I like the way of making groups stay active!

Just wondering did you guys get the idea from my set about the group invites? (http://www.polyvore.com/my_polyvore_idea/set?id=22611390) That's really cool ha ha :)

Anonymous said...

i think its a good idea because i have a group that didnt work out

Anonymous said...

i am new so i only have a few people following me. does this mean ill lose my group????!!!!!! :( i really like it and check it a lot and i really worked hard pleease dont delete it!!!!!!! :((

Anonymous said...

that is a VERY good idea.(:
thanks so muchh polyvore, i love this place.

I am pleased with the first change, but the 30 contacts or more to create group is really rough. Just because you're not popular on Polyvore you can't make a group for your contacts? What if you wanted a small, close-knit group? I would really advise changing this option back; it's seems HIGHLY exclusive. Otherwise people have to try desperately to get others to follow them just so they can make a group. That doesn't really seem fair at all.

Anonymous said...

I find this idea plain stupid. A lot of people are active but don't have much followers because they don't exactly make sets that the crowd likes. Are you just going to purely judge how capable of a moderator they are by how popular they are?

Anonymous said...

I think some of these changes will benefit the groups but I completely disagree with the fact that mods have to have 30+ contacts. I make at least one set just about every week, am a mod to a group in which I remind people to enter whatever contest we have going every day and encourage people to make sets and give contest ideas, and I only have 8 "followers"! I enjoy being a mod and don't want to be forced to add people just so I can continue to be one. Please change this rule.

I think if the moderator of a group has not been active for 6 months, then another moderator spot should be opened to be a moderator along with the previous moderator. If the original member is still not active within a year, then the new moderator will be permanent. This is because there are a lot of active groups out there, but the moderator hasn't logged on in months, or years, so there can't be any contests.

Anonymous said...

Great ideas! Though I am confused about the 'by application'. Can someone explain that to me?

Anonymous said...

Great! But the only thing I would like done is to be able to remove moderators, as one of my moderators hasn't been on since February, and I think many people will agree with this.

Anonymous said...

I love the new changes! Great ideas! however, i don't think it is that fair to have at least 30 people following you. If someone is newer and doesnt have as many contacts, they could still create a very active group with many people.

this isn't about the groups, but i noticed just now as i was trying to make a set, that when you type in a text, it strings all the words together. is this a glitch or was it a planned change?

Anonymous said...

I REALLY hate all of these changes. This is the worst yet. Polyvore was fine before. Now you're just trying to hard to make it perfect. Nothing is ever perfect, and the more changes you make, the more I notice the imperfections.

I think these are great changes that will promote activity and excellence in groups. Thanks Poly-team!

This is awesome , makes things way easier. Hope you guys make some more changes .

is it possible for you to invite more person then once? maybe have a little drop down list of all your contacts and then you can click them to add them to a list of people which you send invitations too! that would be amazing!

Anonymous said...

the thing with having thirty contacts doesnt seem fair because new members cant always get thirty contacts and moderating groups helps in getting contacts

Anonymous said...

I like this but in a way I don't. My computer is having problems so if I can't get on I can't mod my groups. Like now, I am on my phone and I am unable to go to my groups and such. I also don't like the 30 contacts thing. I have one account that I have had awhile and have plenty of followers but on my newest I don't think I have 30 followers :/ but I am mod and comod of a few groups so does this mean I'm kicked off from moding?? If so I hate the 30 amount of contacts thing

Anonymous said...

I dont like this, what if people dont have 30 contacts and they want to make a group? What if they have a great idea for a group and you wont let them make it and they know people will join it?

Anonymous said...

this is a fantstic idea!!

I have a question: what does "by application" mean? Does it mean that a member that wants to join has to send in a set and the moderator accepts them?
I think that this could be a good idea, especially for battle groups (of which I am moderating 6 of), but what about the people that want to create a group? Maybe they're just really new and active, but no one really knows them... I remember how hard it was to get at least 10 contacts!

Thank you so much for putting my group (Welcome to the Dollhouse) in your blog! I love Polyvore and am very pleased with the new changes!

EMILY LIZ said...

That's great!!! But I would still love to delete my own group. I think that we should have a link that the group leader can delete if he or she doesnt want the group anymore;I really tried to find out a way to delete a group before but i couldn't. Does anyone know how to delete a group if ur the group leader???? I haven't seen a link anywhere. I know that you can leave a group WITHOUT A GROUP LEADER, but that looks wrong. I wish poly would consider putting a "delete group link" on the group, that way the group member can delete the group themselves

Guess it's pretty good...

Hi, a few of us were commenting about what changes we'd like the other day, one thing mentioned a couple of times is to have groups in alphabetic order when you get the drop down menu asking what groups to add a set to. I'd also love it if more groups could show after the name what contests they are currently running. There are so many groups that it's a lot to go through to see what's happening on all of them. I quite often see a contest I'd like to enter then can't find it again by the time I look for it again later on!

thankyou thankyou thankyou! This helps a TON!

from what i've seen, many people are upset because although it says polyvore will send you a notification AFTER two months, most people get their notifications much earlier than two months. maybe polyvore needs to re-check the group activity times?

I love all the new changes you have made, however there are a couple of things I would love to see Polyvore upgrade. They have been on my mind since coming onto this great site!
1)...I would love to see our Groups Alphabetized! When searching for a group to submit our sets to. This is frustrating to those of us who have over 25 groups we belong to!
2)...Would love to see the 50 items lifted and at least make it 75-100 items. Sometimes you just need those extra few pieces to make it just right!
3).....Have you ever wished there was an "invite" box? I mean a place where people could send you a invite to make them your contact. I have missed so many people who have added me as a contact because there is lot's of activity on my activity page, lol!
4)...Be able to "group" your groups! Like have all your interior groups in one place, fashion in another and so on.
These are just suggestions, but would make an all ready fantastic place even more fantastic!....thanks so much

Anonymous said...

Fabulous idea!!! There are so many groups, it's hard to "weed" through them all. Love the idea of keeping active groups engaged! SUGGESTION: Maybe you already thought of this, but is there some way to list groups by activity and/or size?

Anonymous said...

This is not fair to people who don't have enough contacts but still want to make a group and create contests. I feel this rule should be changed immediately! :/

Anonymous said...

why the f*** did they do that? now i have SO MUCH spam mail!

Anonymous said...

WHAT? what is a "group" really?

Adriana said...

:( honestly polyvore, i like the way u changed the groups but i don't like the changes you have made with the sign of polyvore. I am not satisfied because before, it was original and creative and noticeable and, now its just boring. :( im sorry for my inconvenience but polyvore, some of us members dont like the sign. although i dont like the imagery u did, i love the way you made some changes to the groups! i have been trying to get rid of my group for a long time!

thank you polyvore, but I want to say that I have a group for my students that hasn't had much more movements because of the school vacations and it was inactivated, so I hope once I start proposing cntest form my students, the acconunt will be activate again.
Yhank you so much for the clever changes!

Will people be kicked out if they don't do anything in the group? Also, why do we need a lot of people to have a contest??

great work! cannot wait till a chat service for immediate answers to questions.

thankyou polyvore you just keep getting better :)

Hate this idea. It's exclusivity bothers me. It's activity checks bother me.

What if I have a group that's not constantly active, but posts something every few months when we want to share? Where is our place on polyvore?

Thank you, Polyvore. This really helps. I had noticed there were WAY too many groups {and of the same kind} on Polyvore, and a lot had been going inactive. This'll clean out the mess a bit more. :D

I like the idea that "Bound 4 Heaven Saved By Grace" pointed out. When she said that she wanted to be able to "group" your groups! Like have all your interior groups in one place, fashion in another and so on.

That a great idea. I have some interior design set and a few of art and expression set, that I like to separate from my fashion set. I love to see a link of some kind by the "icon" the blue link that says
Messages
Get the clipper
Organize my items
Create a set
Create a collection
My comments
Add Polyvore to my blog

or maybe by the "polyvore folders" by the:

I added a new member to both of my groups, and submitted two sets to one, and 3 to the other. As well as emailing all the members of both groups. I hope this is enough to save it. I don't want my groups to be DE-activated.

Anonymous said...

I don't like the 30 'followers' thing. Popularity does NOT equal experience! I've moderated groups on other sites, and owned them too! I want to make a roleplay, but I can't because I only have 8 followers!

marah24 said...

You should change needing 30 members to create contests...

Anonymous said...

I hate that you can only make 6 groups.I think it should be as much as you want.Another thing is there should be a plsce to deactivate your group. It should not be up to them to pick when to deactivate. :,( This makes me sad.

Adriel said...

I can't figure out how to invite more than one person at a time when i click on the group invite, and it sucks because i have to invite 1 person at a time which is a HUGE waste of time is there like a special way to send an email to more than one person?

TruthJC said...

What if you find an inactive group, say that hasn't had any activity or contests for 4 or 5 years? Can someone else take over that group and become moderator rather than delete the group? If so, how? Thanks!! :-)
