We're thrilled to officially launch our new Style Expert Series. Twice a month, we'll be spotlighting inspiring folks from the fashion and entertainment industries as Featured Style Experts in our Style Advice section. In addition, we'll be flipping the script and having them ask you their burning questions!
To kick off our Style Expert Series, Emmy award-winning stylist and costume designer for Fox's hit TV shows American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, Soyon An will be taking your questions today! We caught up with Soyon to ask her a few questions:
Why did you want to become a stylist?
I wanted to become a stylist because I like the idea of being able to change characters through an outfit and I love making people look and feel good with styling.
What's been your career highlight or favorite professional moment?
There's a few special moments, but winning an Emmy for the 2nd time was my most recent favorite, especially since I wasn't expecting it at all and the timing of the announcement couldn't have been more perfect in my life.
Who do you get your inspiration from or who are your favorite designers?
My inspirations come from artists like Nick Cave, Degas, Van Gogh, Banksy, Kid Robot, Yohji Yamamoto, Heatherette, Chanel, and the list goes on... I also get inspired by my world around me.
What advice would you give to aspiring stylists?
The stylist you're working for will differ from stylist to stylist. Learn as much as you can from every one because you will be able to apply that to everything that you're doing when you are your own stylist.
