Interview with eighty jane

We first came across eighty jane by way of Twitter, and discovered all the awesome sets she's been creating on Polyvore for her website, The Fashion Cult. From splurge and save features to fashion horoscopes, we're pretty impressed by the cool ways she's using her fashion sets that we just had to know more about her!

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

I am an independent fashion writer and wardrobe stylist. While I am based in Atlanta, I travel often and my family is international. Ultimately, I am an entrepreneur with several fashion-related products in the works. One of my biggest projects is The Fashion Cult. It is a network of blogs (and eventually applications) that address style, music, shopping, and fitness - all through the lense of a fashionista! I started the flagship property years ago as a hobby before the blog boom. I'm currently preparing to re-launch my fashion horoscope feature, called Haute Horoscope. I often write under the pseudonym of Eighty Jane (or eightyjane, eighty, e.j.). EightyJane.com is my personal website/portfolio site. I publish clips of things I work on for clients there, as well as links to my various online profiles.

What's hot in your 'hood?

The Atlanta fashion scene is hard to pin down: there's somewhat of thrift-chic, hipster scene here, but on the other hand some people of very glamorous - full makeup and stilettos everyday! A few years ago, when I spend more time clubbing and bar-hopping, I would take street style photos for my blog. I chose people that were unique or taking some sort of style risk. I just turned 30, so these days I'm pretty focused on career. If there's a new trend amongst the younger set, I'm afraid I don't know what it is. I think vintage is still pretty big here.

What's one thing you wish people would wear more of?

I would love to see men and woman here in Atlanta and everywhere start paying more attention to tailoring. And hats! I would love to see hats come back as a common everyday thing.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I discovered Polyvore years ago when it was still fairly new via Iqons.com. I have a profile there as a wardrobe stylist and I connected with one of the original creators. It was instantly a favorite pastime and I'm thrilled to see how much it's grown.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do you like about Polyvore?

I love to use Polyvore as a fantasy closet, stocking up my virtual wardrobe with all the beautiful things I would buy if my style budget was unlimited. I also use it to create outfits demonstrating trends or wardrobe advice for my blogs and for my clients. It's been an amazing tool for me - for fun and for work!

If you could share one tip or trick with a new Polyvore member, what would it be?

I would tell new members to just have fun with it and follow your own style. Don't be afraid to try things you don't see anyone else doing and know that you will develop skills and a rhythm as you go along.

Do you have a favorite fashion designer or style icon who has influenced you?

Favorites are always hard for me because my style is dynamic and every changing. Even though I don't tend to wear his style, I've always loved John Galliano for the narrative flavor of his shows. Must be the writer in me :) Right now, I'm attracted to styles that are somewhat minimalist in the vein of '90s Jil Sander paired with interesting accessories.

We last interviewed katieci and she wants to know what your absolute favorite article of clothing is?

If you look in my (real) closet you'll see a lot of white; and I probably have more than my fair share of white button-downs. In fact, my favorite article of clothing right now is a high-colored white shirt from K by Karl Lagerfeld.

What online stores do you like to clip from?

I like to clip from farfetch.com, and joanshepp.com although these days the site seems pretty well stocked. I wish we could clip from Luisaviaroma.com!

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

Again, it's hard for me to choose faves, but among my sets I enjoy the following:

What's your favorite set created by another Polyvore member?

There are so many talented stylists and artists on Polyvore that choosing one set is excruciating! Even though I like Polyvore best for it's fashion possibilities, I'm amazed at how innovative people get with it. This is set from mistinguett is incredible:

I like that it's art, essentially, but it's representing an iconic fashion figure. It's simple in its materials but beautifully executed.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

I think the site is doing a good job of developing new features while maintaining a fairly basic, user friendly space. The only thing I can think of is that I wish there were more menswear items.
