Mini Interview with a Mini Editor: City Sage

Want some sage advice on what you should be wearing this fall?  Pop on over to the city sage and check out what Anne Sage has picked out in her Mini Editor for a chance to win our $1,000 blogger and reader contest Make yourself at home-- from shoes to swatches, the city sage offers inspiration in all colors.

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
From girly glam to modern cool, it's the happy, peppy place where fashion and interiors come to play

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
I chose these pieces with the same care that I shop in real life; I looked for items that could stand out as the best of the current season, but that would pair with everything already in my closet and also look great for years to come.

What are your favorite trends for fall?
Rich hues like mulberry, saffron and cobalt; juxtaposing classic menswear with feminine sparkles; and anything leopard!

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
I'll treat myself to a new outfit for the Rue Magazine launch party in New York City. A memorable cocktail dress, a killer pair of shoes, and a luxe evening clutch. But that's only if I curb my parking ticket habit between now and then :)

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets? What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
I'm a storyteller at heart, so I'm drawn to boards that set a scene--outfits that scream 'Wear me to brunch with the girls!' or 'I'm your Friday night date look!' The winning set will be one that not only looks great from a fashion perspective, but that inspires me to welcome the Fall season by getting out of the house and having fun.

Here's one of her favorite looks so far: "It's what I'd wear if I were a high-powered magazine editrix waltzing into the office a la Meryl Streep in 'The Devil Wears Prada'."

Changes to Groups

Groups are a very important part of the Polyvore community. They're a great way to explore cool themes, meet people who share the same interests as you, and find fun contests. Whether you're Gossip Girl-obsessed, fascinated by paper dolls, or want to attempt the 50 Muse Challenge, there's a group for you!

As part of our effort to improve groups, we spent some time analyzing what makes groups successful. What we learned is that the most successful groups are the ones that stay active, are well-moderated and have a specific focus. So to help promote groups that do a good job of this, we're making three key changes to groups:

1. Invitation Only/By Application Groups
To help encourage active groups, we've added a new option that allows group moderators to make their groups invite-only, by application, or open to all. We added invite-only and by application because we noticed that some groups were using auditions & tryouts to screen for members who would stay active and engaged.

2. Moderating/Creating Groups
Another thing we noticed is that people who are very active on Polyvore tend to be the best moderators. So another change we've made that you must have at least 30 people following you as a contact in order to create or moderate groups.

3. Cleanup of Old, Inactive Groups
The last change we're making is to clean up the old, inactive groups on Polyvore. Last week we began notifying moderators of groups that have had no activity in the last 30 days that their groups would be deactivated. The most common piece of feedback was "Thank you, I had been wanting to get rid of that group but couldn't figure out how!" However, some of you thought that 30 days of inactivity was too short of a time period since moderators may go on vacation or have seasonal groups. So going forward, only groups that have had no activity in the last 2 months will be deactivated. If you receive a notification and you want your group to remain active, all you have to do is submit a set or create a contest in your group.

We hope these changes will make it easier for you to moderate your groups as well find interesting groups for you to join! As always, feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts or suggestions.

Mini Interview with a Mini Editor: Wit & Whimsy

We're excited to introduce you to another Mini Editor from our $1,000 contest for bloggers and readers! Today we'll hear from Meghan at WIT & Whimsy. Check out her favorite picks for fall in w&w's Mini Editor and don't forget to submit some sets for your shot at $1,000!

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
WIT & Whimsy was created to bring city-living & loving gals together that want to talk fashion, beauty and all things women’s lifestyle.

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
After going to New York Fashion Week this past February and seeing the Fall collections of so many great designers, I was so inspired by the shows I saw for this Fall wardrobe I pulled for the contest. I pulled pieces that I saw in the shows of designers like Haute Hippie and Cynthia Steffe.

What are your favorite trends for fall?
I am all about embracing texture this Fall and suede and leather are going to be big. I saw lots of big knits and feminine details like sequins grace the runways and love that they create a hybrid of the cozy look of Fall sweaters with chic elements that keep your outfit from being boring & drab (like the weather can sometimes make us feel in the Fall). Neutrals are also a trend I'm loving because my wardrobe is often made up of khakis, blacks and greys. Here's more on the Fall 2010 trends to watch.

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
I'd use a portion of it to supplement my Fall wardrobe and get some of the pieces I saw on the runways back in February and put those pieces to good use in my outfit posts, which is a newer endeavor for me on WIT & Whimsy. The other portion I'll be a savvy gal and put it into savings. Not as much fun as shopping, but definitely worth it :) More so than winning the prize though, I'm loving seeing everyone's sets and would be most happy to have a w&w reader win for their creativity and fashion sense!

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets? What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
Sets should really evoke an entire look and say something about the person who put it together. I want to see that thought was put into creating a Fall wardrobe from the pieces I selected and is something that is both wearable for the Fall and also has fun with what Fall is all about: cozy, chic and evoke a sense of whimsy (naturally!) from playing with various textures and trends.

And here's one of her favorite reader-submitted sets!

Polyvore in San Francisco Magazine

What's the latest trend taking place in the Bay Area? It's that the smart girls are the queens of chic. San Francisco Magazine contributor Joanne Furio caught up with user widelyflung about how anyone on Polyvore can become a trendsetter. Be sure to check out the article online and in the September issue of San Francisco Magazine (we're on the cover!)

Also check out this great article by Elizabeth Varnell and Mackenzie Wagoner about a day in the life of a digital fashionista.

Interview with widelyflung

Today's interview is with widelyflung. She's a small town girl from Kentucky living it up in the big city of San Francisco! This talented creator first discovered Polyvore during an online search for shoes and soon became an addict (we're so happy you're here!) widelyflung was also just featured in a San Francisco Magazine article about online style sites where she talks about what she loves most about Polyvore!

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Amy, I'm 25, and I live in San Francisco. I currently teach English as a Second Language but have a passion for all things web 2.0. I think it's about time Education catches up to the reality of students' lives and integrates the web and technology into the curriculum more completely. One day, I'd love to work for a web based company and help build tools that democratize the creation and flow of information.

What's the story behind your Polyvore profile name?

Widelyflung is actually the name of a long running blog I have with my best friends from high school. We all went our separate ways for college, so the name came from our geographical reality of being "widely flung" throughout the country. I originally created my Polyvore account so we could share what was in our closets with each other...but I quickly became addicted and told them to set up their own accounts!

How would you describe your sense of style/fashion?

I would say I'm a recovering southerner (I love my pearls) getting in touch with my inner geek chic.

What's hot in your 'hood right now?

I live and work in dramatically different neighborhoods in San Francisco. Where I live in the laid-back, anything goes Haight, I'm seeing a ton of lace (tanks, leggings, gloves, dresses, headbands you name it!), high waisted shorts, and oversized t-shirts. However, I work in the more upscale and trendy Marina neighborhood. There, I'm noticing a lot of leather jackets, wedge heels, and quilted bags. I love people watching on my commute and seeing the style shift unfold before my eyes.

What's one thing you wish people would wear more of?

Dresses! No other item of clothing is as versatile, flattering, and timeless as a dress. I would love to see a resurgence of shift dresses especially, just because they're so classic. With a great pair of leggings, an interesting scarf, and a blazer you can take any dress and make it work for just about any situation.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I was searching on Google for ballet flats and a Polyvore set popped up in my results. Fifty clicks and a thousand inspirations later, I was a member.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do you like about Polyvore?

I'm on a tight teacher budget, so I primarily use Polyvore to strategically plan out my purchases as well as find new ways to style what's already in my wardrobe. I love clicking on an item I already own and finding a dozen or more unique suggestions on how to style it. I also use Polyvore in my classroom! I'll often have my ESL student's make collages for presentations and I've had middle school girls join role plays to work on their literacy skills.

If you could share one tip or trick with a new Polyvore member, what would it be?

Get involved in a group or find a niche of like-minded creators! I find myself looking forward to logging onto Polyvore each day because of the friends and connections I've made more so than my addiction to fashion. So, find some users' sets you adore and leave some love! We're a welcoming community, so don't be shy!

Do you have a favorite fashion designer or style icon who has influenced you?

I grew up in a small town in Kentucky and learned most of what I know about designers and fashion (initially anyway) from the school of Carrie Bradshaw. To this day, I continue to draw inspiration from her confidence and unbridled passion for style and life. Nowadays, I like to draw inspiration from beautiful strangers on the bus, thesartorialist.com and the seemingly thousands of fashion blogs I stalk daily.

What online stores do you like to clip from?

Admittedly, I don't clip from too many stores (mango.com being the only exception) but I do find myself constantly stalking celebrity gossip sites and clipping style inspirations whenever I find a look I just have to emulate.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

What's your favorite set created by another Polyvore member?

I'm in awe of the whimsy and flat-out creativity displayed in the paperdoll sets I've seen. I like this set by ∂rеαmiηg•συτ•ℓσυ∂ in particular because in addition to being endlessly stylish, it also seems to tell a story. I can imagine hanging out with the girl in the set and dancing until 2 a.m. The best sets, like the best art, always tell a story and are able to instantly transport you to a different place and time.

Are your real life outfits similar to the ones your create on Polyvore?

This is such an interesting question because I think my style has changed dramatically because I started using Polyvore. Before, I avoided trends at all cost because I didn't really feel like I understood them. Now, I use Polyvore to experiment with trends and test drive more daring fashion risks before I take them. All in all, I'd say my Polyvore self is a more trendy and risk taking version of my everyday self. However, I like to think that if my two selves were to meet they'd get along fabulously!

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

I'm still in awe of the mini editor and style expert features! However, one tiny detail that would enhance my experience is being able to do a search within "My Items". I love that I can organize my items, but sometimes you lose that great shoe in the bottom of your closet because you forgot to tag it appropriately and being able to search for it would be amazing. I think I use my Polyvore closet more than my own real-life closet!

Mini Interview with a Mini Editor: Savile

Meet Savile, another fashionista blogger competing to win in our $1,000 Mini Editor contest for bloggers and readers!  She's picked some amazing items for her Mini Editor so head over to her blog and get styling for your shot at $1,000!

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
A quirky girl with big city dreams.

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
I asked my friends what items they love for fall, but I really thought about what I'd seen around. The cute boots, the plaid, the jackets all that. I feel like fall should be fun & stylish! I tried to skip out on the bland items & put in fun things that really would connect to fall fashionistas all around.

What are your favorite trends for fall?
I'm loving distressed jeans! They're so stylish & fun to wear. There's no limit on how I can style them, & they seem to be a big favorite in the mini editor.

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
Ahhh! That would be a dream come true. Well, my sister's starting college help her get some new boots that she loves, or maybe the jacket she's been staring at. Then, I'd give some money to my parents. I've gotten my love for fashion from them, so I'd take them shopping to thank them for what they've done. After all that I'd just buy a lot of things for school, and I really want to show my style more this year. Also, my birthday's coming up so I'd just run crazy! I'd save at least $200 for emergency shopping, and I can't forget the little gifts for my friends who've always supported me.

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets? What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
In the submitted sets, I'm looking for personal style to come through. I'm not looking for someone to show what's been on the runway or what's been hot in New York! I want that one look that shows their style and shows what they'd buy with the $1000. Also, I want them to know that to me it's not about how fancy the set is or how great the layout is! I'm really looking for a fantastic outfit that was made with lots of love and time. But best of all, I want them to have fun with my mini editor :)

Here's one of savile's favorites so far!

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
An eye-pleasing variety of fashion, home design, beauty and photography.

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
I was thinking about neutral tones with pops of color, warm weather items (coats and loose sweaters) along with sophisticated accessories. All the items I chose really mimic my style so it was easy!

What are your favorite trends for fall?
Camel & neutral colors and knits.

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
I would buy some items for my home and give to charity- though I am not sure which one, I have a few in mind.  I would also like to host my first giveaway for my readers, who oh-so deserve it! :)

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets?  What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
I am looking for uniqueness- lots of items and layering that look great together, collage-like.

And here's one of the design dish's favorite sets so far!

Inactive Groups

Many of you are members as well as moderators of groups on Polyvore, so you know firsthand how great they are for exploring themes and hanging out with like-minded people. Whether you have a fascination with steampunk art and fashion or share a love for the TV show Glee, there's a group for you. And if there isn't one already, you can create it!

The secret sauce for making a group successful is to make sure it's actively moderated. So in order to help members find groups that are interesting and relevant, we're going to be deactivating ones that have had no activity in the last 30 days. If you moderate a group that is affected by this, you'll receive a notification from us that your group will become inactive in 7 days. If you wish to save your group, there are some things you can do like submit a new set or create a contest in the group. However if within 7 days there is still no activity, your group will be removed. We hope that this change will make it easier for you to find active groups to participate in!

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
It's reviews, outfit ideas, news and community building centered around Anthropologie

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
My closet is full of fun items and I wanted to reflect that here. I looked for items that would fit into every aspect of my life, from work to going out to date night to casual weekend wear. The color palette is a mix of warm fall hues so there are tons of possible combinations.

What are your favorite trends for fall?
My overall look tends to be very feminine but I'm excited about experimenting with wool military coats and combat boots this fall. I love the oversized sweater trend too!

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
Since this contest involves my blog's community participation, I would like to thank them by giving away half through a contest. The other half will go towards a few fall items I have my eye on.

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets? What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
For awhile I was living the solid colored life in my outfits. These days I'm mixing patterns and textures so I'm looking for reader outfits that inspire me with new combinations. I want to see which accessories readers choose and why. I'm thrilled with the sets the community has come up with so far!

And here's one of Effortless Anthropologie's favorite sets so far!

Mini Interview with a Mini Editor: One Crafty Fox

One Crafty Fox is another great blogger competing to win $1,000 for herself and a reader in our $1,000 contest for bloggers and readers! Check out her favorite picks for fall in her Mini Editor and don't forget to submit some sets for your shot at $1,000!

How would you describe your blog in one sentence?
A virtual party filled with frills and fun!

What was your inspiration behind the items you picked for your dream wardrobe for fall?
I selected items that I could see myself actually wearing and then threw in a few daring items here and there. It's not difficult to find the hottest looks on Polyvore, so I guess I had a little help. There is so much inspiration in the beauty around me, I just typing key words into the search engine and am flooded with so many drool-worthy items!

What are your favorite trends for fall?
I don't think I will ever get tired of the classic riding boot or a soft neutral leather (or faux leather for that matter). The boyfriend blazer is great and all, but I am completely crushing over this years tapered style. It's just so much more sophisticated and girlie. And layers! Lots and lots of layers topped with a cute knit hat.

If you win the $1,000 prize, what will you use it for?
A thousand dollars is a lot of money, so I think the better question is, what will I not be using it for, lol! I would love to invest in key items for my closet, classic quality pieces that I will have for seasons to come. I could also use some fun and flirty pieces like a gather-front skirt and polka dot blouse with delicate ruffled sleeves.

What are you looking for in reader-submitted sets?  What should your readers keep in mind to win $1,000 if you are the winner?
For me it comes down to quality, not quantity. I'm looking for a full outfit... that includes a top, a bottom, maybe a jacket, and of course corresponding accessories. You don't leave your own home in the morning without throwing some pants on, right? So you shouldn't leave my virtual change room looking that way either :)

And here's one of One Crafty Fox's favorite sets so far!
