Featured Style Expert: Monica Botkier

Monica Botkier has become one of the leading independent accessories designers in the United States by creating items she describes as embodying “luxury through custom detailing, innovation and quality.”

She’s known for her attention to detail, a skill she cultivated while being a fashion photographer for leading style magazines before she made the switch to designer. In 2003, she wanted a bag that would accommodate her busy lifestyle so she created one. That bag, known as The Trigger, is considered to have ‘launched an industry.’

Her accessories are worn by some of the most influential style icons in the world including Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Beyonce, Rihanna and Rachel Bilson.

Botkier was inducted into the esteemed Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2007.

We caught up with Monica to ask her a few questions:

Why did you want to become a designer?

It’s a really great story. It almost happened by accident. In 2003 I was a photographer working on fashion shoots for magazines such as Glamour and Nylon. I wanted a designer bag that looked super luxe, chic and functional but didn’t break the bank. At that time, all the designer handbags were very expensive and basically like big black holes. I designed the Trigger and it caught on like wild fire. The rest is history.

What's been your career highlight or favorite professional moment?

One of my career highlights was being inducted into the CFDA in 2007. That was definitely a surreal experience. I was inducted the same year as other exceptionally talented designers like Philip Lim, Jason Wu, and Tory Burch. It was a defining moment in my career.

Who do you get your inspiration from and who are your favorite designers?

I am really inspired by the everyday NYC woman. The woman are so diverse, have such strong sense of style and self - I am always drawn to their confidence.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers and stylists?

Go with your gut and work with passion. A lot of what I accomplished was based on my instinct and being fearless.

Ask Monica Botkier your design questions now in Style Q&A!

Interview with Fashezine

Today's interview is with Fashezine, live all the way from Bucharest, Romania! She's always trying out different layouts and her clothing pieces are the true stars of her sets. With an amazing sense of style, it's no wonder she also keeps a blog, Fashezine. So be sure to check it out!

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

I'm a girl in her early 20s who's crazy about magazines, fashion and books. Last year I finished a masters in Management of Luxury Goods in Monaco, and now I'm still in my year off after deciding not to work in a corporation. Right now I'm back home in Bucharest, having great fun taking photos and writing articles for my blog, and I'm still thinking about putting together a zine. As for the future, I have some very exciting plans in mind which I'll share in do time :)

How would you describe your sense of style/fashion?

My style has been in a constant evolution over the past years. Yet I've always had an inclination towards dark colors (black will always be a favourite) and earthy colors (caramel, dark red, beige, gold), and also quality fabrics such as silk, cashmere, lace and velvet. Even when I wasn't so involved in fashion I was aware of the ongoing trends, but still maintained my own style. I'm a firm believer in the fact that you look best in things that fit you, both body-wise and personality-wise. At the moment, I have a strong inclination towards items with prints and shapes that are inspired by nature and natural magic.

What's hot in your 'hood right now?

The streets of Bucharest are becoming more and more stylish, and in a very personal way. There's an increasing need of being unique and of expressing ones individual style. Therefore vintage, DIYs and personalized items are in high demand.

What's one thing you wish people would wear more of?

I would have to go with hats and other hair accessories on this one. These are very diverse, quite versatile and stylish, and not to mention they offer excellent protection from the external environment.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I'm not quite sure if it was a friend of mine who stumbled upon Polyvore and decided to share it with me, or if it was through Google (everybody's friend). Regardless, ever since then the world has not been the same and I'm loving it!

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do you like about Polyvore?

First of all, I think Polyvore is so amazingly inspirational. It's an open community that managed to build like-minded groups who shape, create and promote trends and ideas. Second I find it very true to the DIY philosophy, and therefore quite empowering. I for one, use it as an endless virtual closet in which I constantly discover new pieces, new stores, and also new trends and styling suggestions.

If you could share one tip or trick with a new Polyvore member, what would it be?

I think I've read this before, but it's really one of the best pieces of advice anyone could give: be yourself! As broad as this sounds, it's actually very simple and straightforward, just use items that you like and do sets that represent who you are and what you stand for. Don't think of what could/should work, and most importantly don't imitate. As Chanel said: “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

Do you have a favorite fashion designer or style icon who has influenced you?

I do have two major style icons in mind: Vivienne Westwood and Isabella Blow, most importantly for their approach to fashion, but not only that. It is their bold manner in which they promoted their strong ideas that's also highly notable. I do love Alexander McQueen, and also Hussein Chalayan, Helmut Lang, Ann Demeulemeester... I really could go on and on.

What online stores do you like to clip from?

Net-A-Porter.com is a favourite, of course, but I do also love Farfetch, Colette, La Garconne and Liberty. I've also recently discovered georgianjewelry.com which is just perfect for anyone interested in fantasy and/or opulence.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

What's your favorite set created by another Polyvore member?

Just one favourite set...that's a difficult one. Recently, I did really appreciate this one as it put together fashion, interior design and art, just to show that inspiration really is all around.

Are you inspired by a particular era when it comes to your personal style?

I do love the femininity of Art Nouveau, yet for some time now I've noticed a definite 60s influence in my choice of clothes and styling.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Maybe a bigger header, perhaps and artsy-fashion illustration with pencil on watercolor? ...Ah and more badges, including some with transparency, please :)

Introducing Templates

There's a new tool in town! We know a lot of you have already discovered our new templates tool because we've been seeing some really amazing template-based sets around Polyvore. But for those of you who haven't, here's the lowdown.

Templates are pre-arranged patterns that you can fill in to make a set. Just load up a template into the Polyvore editor and try dragging items into the placeholders. Templates can suggest themes (e.g. Christmas), pose a question (e.g. What would you wear for a zombie apocalypse?), or provide a guide for a tricky set layout (e.g. mosaics). For example, here's a template that features Polaroids:

And here's a set based on that template, a dinosaur-themed Christmas wish list!

Templates help our newer members get the hang of making sets. Polyvore is a vibrant community of creative minds. In fact, some of you are so talented and artistic that it can be intimidating to our newer members! We hope templates make it easier for our newer members to learn how to make great set layouts. And we're very grateful to all our experienced members who help nurture the newbies by sharing tips & tricks (and now templates!)

Templates make it easier and faster to create sets. We noticed that many of our members who are bloggers and tipsters have a signature set style. Lately many members have also been making cutout-style sets using the custom background tool. By templatizing your set layouts, you can save time and make more sets more quickly.

Templates let you create fun themes and share them with each other. Another way to use templates is to pose challenges and questions to other members. For example, you could ask people to pick their top 10 wardrobe staples, create a holiday wishlist, style a particular item of your choice, or fill out a Mad Libs style template.

Making a template is simple. Just click on the arrow next to the 'Create' link at the top of your page and select 'a template.' Once you're in the editor, click on the 'Add Placeholder' button. Add in as many placeholders as you'd like and then click 'Publish template.' Once it's published, people can create sets based off of your template. Soon we'll be adding a gallery of templates for people to easily browse through the best ones.

The Polyvore community continues to amaze us everyday! If there's one thing we've learned over the last 3.5 years of launching new features on Polyvore, it's that you guys are much more creative than us. We know you'll think of a million unexpected ways to use templates and can't wait to see what you come up with.

As always, we'd love to hear your feedback, so just leave a comment here on the blog.
