Susan Cernek is the Executive Fashion and Beauty Editor at Glamour.com, where she covers trends, fashion news and and contributes to both Slaves to Fashion and The Girls in the Beauty Department blogs.
We're thrilled to have her on Polyvore as our Featured Style Expert this week and caught up with her to ask a few questions of our own.
What do you love about covering the fashion industry?
It's the intersection of art, commerce and personal expression, which means the possibilities for analysis and interpretation are wide and varied--so while trends may come and go, the conversation never stops. It's also an industry that happens to be filled with a huge cast of dynamic characters which means there's never, ever a dull day.
What advice would you give to aspiring fashion journalists?
Spend as much time with your nose in the fashion history books as you do online. While it's important to have an interest in contemporary stores, designers, icons and trends, you need to be equally familiar with Magasin au Bon Marche, Madame Gres, Marchesa Casati and YSL's Ballet Russes collection of '76 to help put things in perspective.
What are your favorite trends so far this year?
Cross-body bags--they're light-weight, back-ache-free and totally liberating for us texting addicts.
What's your trend prediction for 2011?
Mies van der Rohe's "less is more" motto will take hold. While I doubt if we'll see the super slick '90s Minimalism return entirely, I think clean lines and simple silhouettes--as seen at Celine, Carven, The Row and Jil Sander--will replace some of the sculptural, embellished styles we've seen so much of in recent years.
