Interview with Mrs tillyjayne

Today's interview is with Mrs tillyjayne, a wife and mother who has dreams of a career in fashion and art. Inspired by her passion for fashion, Mrs tillyjayne started her blog Dear Bette to share her musings on both runway and street style by way of Polyvore sets.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

I live Blackpool, North England - a seaside town where it rains A LOT! I'm 28, 29 in the summer...which means the big 30 is coming next year. I actually find that a little scary. Although I'm a mother and a wife, I still don't quite feel like a grown up. Maybe it's because there are still so many things I want to do. I currently work for a marketing company as the Credit Control Manager and am a Personal Assistant to the directors. Though I enjoy it, it's not what I see myself doing forever. I'd love to run a successful fashion blog and be visiting fashion weeks to snap the latest trends on and off the catwalk and spend time waffling about my passion for clothes.

What's the story behind your Polyvore profile name?

My profile name is simply my first and middle name, not very creative, I know. I've been thinking about changing it to my blog title 'Dear Bette' which comes from my love of old movies and actresses from Hollywood's Golden Age, Bette Davis being one of them.

How would you describe your sense of style?

I suppose I would call it eclectic. I pretty much dress how I feel on that particular day, sometimes it's a vintage style tea dress with mary janes. Other times I'll wear leggings and an oversized shirt. In my teens I was really into the punk look and wore pink fishnets religiously which matched my magenta hair. Nowadays it's a little too much for the office!

What's hot in your 'hood?

Combat boots are still the staple footwear of the moment and blazers are definitely the jacket of choice. Other than that the street style is pretty diverse for a relatively small town.

What's one thing you wish people would wear more of?

Perhaps because I enjoy vintage style, I would like to see women dressing more like women. I myself am guilty of throwing on a pair of jeans more often than I should but wouldn't it be lovely to see women wearing pencil skirts not just because they are going to work? I guess it's impractical for lots of things women do now, nonetheless, everyone needs a little glamour.

How did you discover Polyvore?

I was searching for inspiration for my wedding last year and found myself Googling 'silver wedding theme' as I wanted a wintery look -- hey presto! Up popped a Polyvore set with items to die for. I was intrigued by the way the mood board was put together and had to find out more.

Tell us a little about what you use Polyvore for and why. What do you like about Polyvore?

Polyvore is a way for me to express myself, put outfits together, and style new looks all without leaving my house or having an enormous clothing budget. It's also a great way to post new trends and must-haves to my blog. One of the best things though, is meeting (albeit virtually) lots of like-minded people. I've made some fantastic 'Poly-friends', who are not only super stylish but also incredible artists, too.

If you could share one tip or trick with a new Polyvore member, what would it be?

Be persistent in finding your own style. When you first join Polyvore it can be too easy to begin replicating layouts and designs of other members -- show the community your true self and you will get so much more in return.

Do you have a favorite fashion designer or style icon who has influenced you?

I couldn't really say I have an over all favourite. I love the couture gowns of Elie Saab, the classic femininity of Chanel and Marc Jacobs just makes my heart ache. Audrey Hepburn has to be up there with my all-time favourite fashion icons but something about Keira Knightley's style makes me want to run out to the stores and emulate her.

What are your 3 favorite sets of the ones you've made?

I really like the style of this set and I have a fascination with Paris - I haven't been yet but have been promised by my husband that we will visit for my 30th Birthday.

This one just because I love winter. Where I live summer is so unpredictable. With winter you know where you are, plus winter fashion is much cosier!

This is one of my more recent sets - something about the colour combination of the Bottega Veneta runway look really appeals to me, I just had to make a set inspired by it.

What's your favorite set created by another Polyvore member?

This is such a difficult question - there are so many sets that I adore and more and more being posted everyday. This set is by a member I have only recently come across, Sofa King Chill. Such a beautiful sense of style, elegance and understated beauty.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Pop-up notifications would be fantastic so I can see what is happening while I'm creating a set. At the moment I have to return to my home page before I know I have a message or a comment. The other huge thing for me is a searching facility for 'My Items' after a few months you begin to build up A LOT of images and finding things weeks down the line is a nightmare.
