Style Influencer Series: Sasha Charnin Morrison

Style Influencer Series

Sasha Charnin Morrison is the Fashion Director at Us Weekly and has more than 20 years of fashion magazine experience, working for such publications as Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen, Mirabella, Vanity Fair, and Allure. She lives in New York.

Why did you want to become a stylist?

I was told by an old boss, Nancy Hessel Weber, when I was an accessories editor at Seventeen that in order to move up and around, I would have to get out of my comfort zone and start pulling clothing for shoots and styling. And she was right. I also was raised in show business and when we started styling celebrities, I was really at ease with them and knew how to work well with people. I have had great success putting our models and celebrities at ease and working with them to create a look that they’re comfortable wearing. At Us Weekly, I shoot everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Ricki Lake to Jennifer Grey to a Real Housewife. I love the diversity.

What's been your favorite professional moment?

My dance audition for the video "Love Is a Battlefield". The highlight, along with being in and making that video, was when I was leaving my audition, the costume designer followed me to the store that I was working at - Acrobat on Columbus Avenue. She bought my audition outfit - which I sold at that store - and other pieces for Pat Benatar which ended up in the video. Benatar’s "bus look", NY "streets look", and "running away look" was basically what I wore to the audition.

Who do you get your inspiration from and, who are your favorite designers?

I love referencing old pictures, movies, posters, and magazine covers like Rolling Stone from the early 1970s. I am a firm believer in absorbing as much style and fashion history as possible. I’m a huge pop junkie. Designers are great tailors and storytellers, and Yves Saint Laurent is probably my top for every reason. I love Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford Gucci collection, Alber Elbaz, Riccardo Tisci, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, The Olsens, Margareta van den Bosch, Ann-Sofie Johansson, and the H&M team, as well as Zara and Topshop. And do not get me started on Azzedine Alaia. Swoon.
