Each of you has a unique and creative style on Polyvore that others admire through your profile page. However, our current profile pages have URLs like http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/profile?id=1234567890 that are long and hard to remember. To make it easier to share your Polyvore profile with friends, we will be introducing personal domains like mychanel.polyvore.com or rachel.polyvore.com, similar to sites like Tumblr, Blogger, and Facebook.
Starting on July 20th, we’ll need everyone on Polyvore to select a unique user name that can be used for your personal domain. It must be 4-32 characters long. Since URLs can only contain the letters A-Z, the numbers 0-9, and dashes, you’ll need to choose your name accordingly.
We’ll be asking everyone for a top choice and 2 backups. If two people pick the same name, preference will be given to the more senior member. You’ll have 2 weeks to make your choices, and then all names will be assigned on August 3rd.
If you don’t select a name within the 2 weeks, we’ll create one for you that’s close to your existing name. Everyone can change their name once.
Also, because each of you will have a unique name, we’ll now be able to support user tagging and @mentions! With this functionality, you can mention your Polyvore friends by tagging them in set descriptions, set comments, and Style Advice. Anytime you’re mentioned, you’ll receive a notification in your activity stream.
We know that some Polyvore members like to add status messages to their user names, such as “Rachel - Busy”. Can we get a show of hands of who wants proper status messages, and who thinks it’s not important? Please leave a comment, and let us know what status messages you most commonly use.

I most commonly use Off/On/Busy for the statuses part. :D It'd be great to have a Busy status, so you know if someone is making a set or something. :)

Great idea!! I do like to change the status from time to time, specially when I'm away for many days or I want to indicate when I want to do tagged sets or not: like Stream- (tag break) or Stream - (tag me!). I mean it's not essential but it's nice, since you can know when your friend are busy or not.
I would love to have the new things your trying I think I would like that little thing about showing when your on and off and the mentions thing it would be awesome so cant wait til the change :)

We should be able to change our URL as often as we want. It's not as if we would tell our friends before-hand.
Like tumblr, you can change it whenever you want but it cannot be made the same as someone elses.

wow!! you keep to amaze us Poly staff!! always working to make this better and better!, I love that we are going to have our own domains, I'm so excited!! and I don't post my status often, so that's not very important for me, but I know many users do, I think that having the option to choose the more important updates like: on vacation, busy, b day coming soon, among others will be great.

I think that this change could be really not so great for Polyvore users. A lot of us change our names to suit our currant style/emotion/etc, and by limiting us to only one name change ever, what happens if we change who we are? What happens when we grow out of something? There's no going back, at all. I also Polyvore is/was a site for constant change, style-related, and this change is permanent,meaning we're stuck with something that in a few monts could be seriously embarrassing. Polyvore, which in my opinion has always been a place to be/express yourself and stand out, is turning into a cookie cutter website.
my only problem with this, is that I would like to be able to change my username/domain whenever wanted.

I hate the whole idea, except for the tagging. I mean like I love my symbols for my name and we can only change it once? What the heck. Why can't we just keep everything, but the tagging friends? And then to change it they can go to settings to update it and change it.

Not letting us Polyvore users have symbols in our name, in my opinion, is taking away some creativity.

This is a horrible idea. If you end up doing this, I will most likely quit Polyvore along with more members. We all love it the way it is now. We love how we can put spaces, symbols, anything we want in our username. Our username is our pride. If you make this change, you will have so many unhappy people. For blog domains, we have Tumblr for that. Now, get serious, Polyvore.

I love the idea of unique user names in the URL and the ability to tag people, but I think the status message idea is unnecessary and unimportant.

The statuses MIGHT be okay, and maybe even the tagging, but domain names? Not so much. Pretty much all of my contacts seem to hate this idea, so please don't do it.
I'm not sure that the domain name thing is a good idea. Seems like a good idea at the time, but humans naturally like change, so having to stick to one url for however long, it can put a fair amount of pressure when whomever is choosing their url. Someone might love All Time Low and put their url as something relating to them, but give it a year, and they might have moved onto a different band, but they're stuck with that domain, because they might have already changed it once.

I really don't like these upcoming changes. I would like to change my username often and be able to use little symbols in them like hearts and such. When I first joined polyvore that was one of the reasons I liked it so much because I'd never seen a website that lets you do that. I really think that polyvore would be better off staying as it is. Some people, including myself, might not be able to choose a username for themselves because they won't have access to a computer from July 20 and on through those two weeks. I know that I personally would much rather be able to choose my own username rather than have others do so. Please, please, please DON'T change polyvore!

Now I have just found out about this and I am not happy. I believe that the URLs weren't a problem and that I believe symbols in our usernames are what make the unique and allow us to express ourself in a special way. I have been a member of this site for a little over a year and I've been noticing alot of changes that are too most people on here unessasarry. Now this is just my opinion so take it or leave it but I think polyvore is not addressing the real things wrong with this site that need to be approved.

The tagging and name is a great idea- but, its not cool to only be able to change your name once. People love switching it around.

I like the freedom of adding symbols and special characters to my username. but i wouldn't have an issue creating a domain name without them,SEPERATE from my username. i also like being able to change my username at will, so i'd like to keep that.

Statuses are also a great idea, as long as its not a stream like Facebook/Twitter. If its just like an AIM status - available, away, idle, logged off.
I don't like the rule of the person who's been on polyvore longest gets the name. I've actually been on polyvore for three and a half years, but my account says seven months; I've been on various accounts. I think you should do first come first serve.
I don't see why we should have a Username PLUS a different URL name, that just makes no sense.
It would make more sense if we just had one name, which was our URL name and username, which you could change as often as you wanted. It would stop the confusion over different URLs to Usernames.
I understand you can't have symbols in URLS so maybe you could just not have symbols in usernames, or in the URL, not put the symbols, put all the other letters and numbers.

Personal domains are a good idea, as long as we are still able to change "profile names". I would hate to have to delete/create a new account to do so. Users should still be able to add/change characters/symbols/font/etc to their profile page as it is a form of creativity and individuality.
I don't think changing the domain will affect this, but I thought it was important to voice.
I think that if you are to do this, you should give members the option in their settings so they can chose if they want the number URL or their own personalized one.
Also if you decide to create that, it should be changeable whenever. I get tired of my usernames so quickly.

Please don't do the status thing. If someone wants to know if you're online, I think it will be pretty obvious after they either get an immediate reply or they don't. If someone will be gone for a long time, they usually make a set or pm their friends anyway.
I wouldn't object to the statuses BUT I do wonder if Polyvore is becoming too much like a social network, I'm also unsure if the tagging will mean more spamming or pestering people to join groups, etc. I don't mean to sound antisocial but I really don't come on Polyvore to blog to talk to people much, I feel like it should be left more personal.

I like the idea of personalized URLs, similar to what's used on Tumblr. But Tumblr lets you change your user name as often as you please. I think Polyvore should do this as well.

Polyvore crew, what have you done to the site? Polyvore is NOT a social networking site! Polyvore is a fashion design site! It is not Facebook, it is not Tumblr, it is not anything, it is Polyvore. So stop trying to make it into its polar opposite.
I think it will be a nice thing to be able to tag people more easily! I hope I don't get my username changed though. I think it's unnecessary to have a status bar. This is not Facebook. We already have PM and comments to make in each set, there is no need to make Polyvore into the same boring social webs. I do think it is time to let people comment on Collections. I always find myself saying "oh what a lovely idea" or "thanks for adding me!" but I have to go and post it on a set because I can't comment on the collections. Please say no to the status bar!!!

In the meantime, will you please address and fix the problems with the activity feed that have been going on this week? What, no. You guys are changing this website a lot. Domains are alright. But like most other people, I'd like to be able to change my name whenever I wanted, rather than a limit of one change. Most people like to change their username to what they feel at the time or like or whatever. This whole, "whoever ranks higher" gets the username or link they want, I feel is ridiculous. And as for you choosing it for us, I don't know. And being limited to one change isn't exactly the best idea. What if someone gets stuck with something they do not like? You guys are making so many changes. In all honesty, this is okay. But think about letting people change their name whenever they prefer, okay?
this is a great idea! I also have another idea: could you possibly come up with some type of "wall" or status widget for each polyvore user to have on their profile page? it could be something like a twitter or facebook update type thing where users can post on their profile page what they are up to on polyvore (ex: -working on a set but having a bit of a creator's block.) it's not a real desire but I think it may be cool to have even as an optional widget for users.

NO STATUSES PLEASE. I don't have a facebook and I generally avoid all websites that try to facebook-ify themselves. I think it's completely unnecessary and through my frequent use of polyvore, I only ever notice younger members trying to make set statuses or constantly updating their username. If you do make statuses, I can only hope it won't be apart of the activity feed.
I'm not really feeling the twitter-esque tags either. Polyvore should focus on adding original features, not stealing them from other popular social media outlets.

It makes it easier for people to say busy, sick, vacation, not taking requests, no tags etc etc. If you don't like the status don't use it. Some of the comments leave me to believe our usernames will change. Am I miss understanding this? I thought it would just add a URL. I can still be Memorykeeper and have that as my URL address, can't I? I also like the status idea. I once changed my username with a status behind it and while I was away another person came in and took my unsername! ugh! Therefore, I have always had to add a symbol in front on my name to keep it.
it's a bit ridiculous to have some random person click on your page and know that you're on vacation, don't you think? you don't know that person and now they know that you're on vacation. a little creepy, in my opinion.

Yes to statuses - I use Polyvore more than Facebook, so it would be nice to share fashion related things with fellow Poly addicts that I can't share with my Facebook things. I don't care weather or not I have a domain name. But I won't complain if I get one.

I think I understand the concept of 'statuses' I don't think Poly.moderators want it to be like a Facebook status or Tumblr blog text thing! It'll probably (hopefully) be like a very simple one word status like busy/online/offline/away etc. NOT like facebook (obviously) where you can type long statuses. Sigh* somepeople need a broader knowledge on the usage of the word 'status'.
P.S I agree with everyidea Polyvore!
Guys, I'm pretty sure when they said 'you can only change your name once' they were talking about the domain name, not your username. Re-read the post again before you freak out.
I personally like it the way it is, but if you do change it we should be able to change our URL as often as me want! You can on Tumblr, so why not on here? Whats the point of not being able to change it??

I don't see why not - the statuses seem fun and all of the changes seem great! Those of you who are in denial about this, probably fear change. Polyvore is making many positive changes to the site, appreciate the fact that they take into consideration the members opinions.
I really don't think that statues are important. if you do that then it will be like most other social media sites.
Cool! I like the domain thing. Just wondering is the url name the same as our display name? Like, could I have my name still be displayed as Lavender with a cursive L, and have my domain name just be lavender.polyvore.com or something? (sort of like facebook?) or are url/domain names and displayed names the same? I think it would be a good idea to allow people to change their names at any time like on tumblr...just to allow people more freedom.
I think the status thing is really stupid, I really don't care what people are doing! If people really want to they can just put that info in their profile page, like in the title at the top or the bio part. A simple online/offline notification (that can be turned off by the user for privacy) would be ok though.
I think the statuses and the tagging is a brilliant idea, but please don't use the url thing. Most members like to change their names, every once in two months, like I do and if the url thing starts, well, it would be rather weird. I don't like that idea, but the other two are pretty awesome :]
Just numbers and letters? That's not very cool. I mean, it looks better with a :) or a symbol like a heart or something. if you had symbols that would be okay... cause then we couuld use our usernames we have now. but since my name's alyssa, there are like a bajillion alyssa's on here all fighting for the name alyssa. i've been a member for over 2 years, so i agree with the 'member being on longest gets the username' except i deleted my 2 yr account and made this new one to start over. so really i have been on here long... sigh. please dont do the statuses unless you allow symbols in the user name polyvore. :(

I love the idea of havin usernames and stuff bc that is ine thing that I had wished the site had. Thank you so much for creating this site and I think the status thing is a cool idea but its not absolutely necessary.. Anyways LOVE the new idea:)
Noooooo, Please dont do the domain thing. I neeed Symbols and stuff in my username ~_~ Its helps keep things more unique.
It's great that you are doing the Tagging and changing URL's but I think the status thing is unnecessary because this is a fashion sight not a blog or facebook :)
I honestly REALLY don't like this idea. :( I like having a unique name with cool symbols, and I don't mind the long URL. If we want to show people our Polyvore account, can't we just like write it down or put it on our phone? Or better yet just log in?! Please stop trying to change the Polyvore we love! It's amazing the way it is now!
Super YAY!!! I love how the Poly-team always finds a way to improve Polyvore. The status updates are great and the best would be the user vanity name instead of having tons of numbers in the URL. Every single site has usernames; FB, Tumblr, Twitter, StylePage, YouTube, MySpace, And now you can even get one for Google+ by going to the gplus.to website so the users wouldn't have to remember a series of numbers. Memorizing our SS# and Licensce# is one thing but memorizing URL numbers...NO WAY!
My first status will be:
"STOP COMPLAINING & MORE STYLING LOVELIES!"

The URL thing is really cool. But not the whole tagging thing. People might over use it and abuse it.
i don't really like this idea. i'm a person who frequently changes their username, and having a permanent domain would kind of bother me. i think it would be better if you could set a URL like they have usernames currently - you have the ability to change it subject to availability. and i'd really like it if the URL didn't have to be your username, considering i enjoy using symbols in my username that wouldn't be compatible with a URL link.

Hey Polyvore! First, thanks so much for asking your members first what they think about the status thing and wanting to get a show of hands. For me, I don't really use it, but I know A LOT of people who do, so I think it might not be a bad idea. I just wouldn't use it myself.
My only issue with the new upcoming changes is the thing about choosing a name for the url. My issue here is that what if someone decides they want to be rude and mean and use another member's name as their url? Sure, the person who has been there longer will win out, but... what if that person is the one who stole the other's name? For example, I have the same name I started with on PV. I've never changed it, nor added any status report to it. But as terrible as it is, I know there are people on PV who are mean and bullies. If they were to take my name, and they have been on PV longer than me, then what? I don't think that's really fair.
So... here's my suggestion. How about you ask all users to set their username to the one they want on the url. This way, if someone tries to steal another's name that is already in use, they can't because it will say that the name is taken. So the name "Jane" might be in use by someone and if another person tries to take it, they won't be able to. They might be able to use Jane1, but not Jane.
Then, you can have a new section that says screen name (or something like that) if they want to use another name. So maybe "Jane" likes to sometimes call herself JaneLady. And that could be changeable.
That might even take care of the whole status thing if a lot of people say they don't like it.

In addition to my earlier comment, I don't think the on/off/busy/etc status would be a bad idea. It would probably be helpful or fun or something. However, as previously stated by others, on sites like Tumblr (and I do believe Twitter, too) you aren't limited to just one domain for the rest of forever. You can change your URL as much as you want. And even then, your URL and blog title are completely separate and they're both flexible and able to be changed at any time.
This would be fun, but by dashes do you mean legit dashes (-) or underscores (_)?? Also, we don't need the status update. If you're on Polyvore, you are. If not, just don't go on or delete your account. Simple as that.
If I read correctly, our url will change, but not our USER NAME. There is a difference. If it makes it easier for the Poly staff, then it should be a done deal.
And if a "status" message is added, isn't that something we can CHANGE on our own?? Or just leave it alone??? I doubt I would ever use a status message, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who would.
I don't see what all the fuss is about & why everyone is freaking out about this. Maybe you could clarify the meaning, for the younger poly users who don't understand what a url is.

OK, totally awesome with the pointless domain thing, but i love my unique and awesome symbolized username I have now and I don't wanna change it because you people thing it would be cool. And the fact that I cant freakin change it if I decide i don't like it in a couple years is really retarded. I mean a domain name would be cool if we didn't have to change our usual names. And the whole thing about being busy or online is cool, i actually like that! BUT Let us have a domain name like, Rachel.polyvore.com, but it is completely pointless to make us change our usernames that are cool and make us unique! I mean, Oh my god.
I don't really want people to know if I'm online or not. But otherwise a status would be cool.
Woah, woah, woah, hold up! I get that you're trying to make polyvore better and all, but I(along with just about everyone I know here) like the choice to change my username whenever I want. My current username? I'll probably be over it in a few weeks at the most. As I will be with the next one, the one after that, and the one after that. My username changes with my interests. That's one thing I LOVE about polyvore! I don't feel so pressured to choose a name, because i can change it later if i wish!
Also, I used to use Internet explorer, but items stopped showing up. I switched to Firefox and everything works just fine, but i still think this issue should be looked into if you have time :)

I think everything is fine, but I'm a bit concerned about not being able to change it. Even on tumblr you can change your username.
But it seems fine, so I don't have to search through all my contacts to find one, because of all the special lettering. It's not bad, but will have room for improvement....

Unique URLs should be first come, first serve like the real world. Not by favoritism. Bottom line.

the status things don't sound that bad, it'd be easier than having to change my name to say that i'm going to be away all the time. speaking of which, i don't think there should be limits on how often we can change our name, some people like to change theirs often and not being able to might you know, interrupt creative flow or whatever. other than that i think it sounds great! much better than a whole heap of numbers!!

The personal domains are a terrible idea. One of the unique things about polyvore is the diverse usernames you can make, and it's great that you can chance those usernames when you grow out of them, or when you change your style, etc. Baaaaad idea polyvore.
Please fix the activity feed first! I haven't had any update in them in 11 hours. I especially need an updated item usage feed.
I think having actual recognizable addresses versus number-strings sounds like an excellent plan, and while I don't use the status messages, I say it's a great idea to give folks a way to have them so that they don't lose them entirely.

Although the domain name idea is a really cool one, I don't think its good because people like changing their user names. If a person names their domain name bieberforeverxxx and leaves for a while, and comes back to the unchangable name wanting a new look, they can't get the satisfaction of seeing their new style on their website. I also think they're unecessary. Whats so great about Polyvore is that as time goes on and style changes, your username can too! the domain names delete the whole purpose of that. And I understand for older fashion people it might be more helpful, but I know it won't really help out the younger part of Polyvore, which i'd like to think theres alot of :) and i don't think the status thing is too necessary either...i know some people do it, but i thought mostly people who do roleplay do that.
yes! i would like to be able to update my status. This way it'll be easier to be on Polyvore and not get bombarded with messages :)

no. I change my username a lot, and i'm sure lots of other members do to, and it's not fair if you limit me to one choice. the mentioning is k, but the status bit is irrelevant. I like polyvore because it's different from all those other sites. I don't really need another tumblr & facebook.

I've not been using any statue for about two years now (from the time when many IDs were "stolen": as your statue were part of your ID, changing it set the previous ID free to be used). When I really need to inform some friends I'm at keyboard, I just change my info and under my name I add "I'm currently: ON (or OFF)". I think statue is not actually necessary to my opinion, but could find some utility from time to time as members are living in many time zones...
This said, I like the idea of getting my personnal PolyDomain :))

Oh grow up people. I'm sorry but the change from a number to a word isn't going to change the site! I barely use my number, it'll be much easier to go to friend's profiles now if we know their's is rachel.polyvore.com or whatever. I support the domain change. I personally don't use brb, or busy in my username, but i like the idea of on and off. :)

I think the URL's and tagging are great ideas, but we really should be able to change them anytime. People's interests change, & they get bored of the same username. Statuses are a good idea as well. I suggest : on, off, busy, on holiday/vacation. One more request: for new members, please allow the choice of the old homepage. I recently made a tip account & find it SO annoying.
