Coming Soon! Personal Domains and Tagging

Coming Soon! Personal Domains and Tagging

Each of you has a unique and creative style on Polyvore that others admire through your profile page. However, our current profile pages have URLs like http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/profile?id=1234567890 that are long and hard to remember. To make it easier to share your Polyvore profile with friends, we will be introducing personal domains like mychanel.polyvore.com or rachel.polyvore.com, similar to sites like Tumblr, Blogger, and Facebook.

Starting on July 20th, we’ll need everyone on Polyvore to select a unique user name that can be used for your personal domain. It must be 4-32 characters long. Since URLs can only contain the letters A-Z, the numbers 0-9, and dashes, you’ll need to choose your name accordingly.

We’ll be asking everyone for a top choice and 2 backups. If two people pick the same name, preference will be given to the more senior member. You’ll have 2 weeks to make your choices, and then all names will be assigned on August 3rd.

If you don’t select a name within the 2 weeks, we’ll create one for you that’s close to your existing name. Everyone can change their name once.

Also, because each of you will have a unique name, we’ll now be able to support user tagging and @mentions! With this functionality, you can mention your Polyvore friends by tagging them in set descriptions, set comments, and Style Advice. Anytime you’re mentioned, you’ll receive a notification in your activity stream.

We know that some Polyvore members like to add status messages to their user names, such as “Rachel - Busy”. Can we get a show of hands of who wants proper status messages, and who thinks it’s not important? Please leave a comment, and let us know what status messages you most commonly use.

We’re really excited about this change! Stay tuned for more details starting July 20th.

Love,
The Polyvore Team

I think the statues are totally unnecessary - this isn't Facebook, after all and it's not a blogging site, either. Please don't do it!

YAY!!

drue says relax said...

i want the status thing! it'll help prevent getting bombarded with pm's while you're trying to do something important

Lizzie Dark Ninja said...

These are such great ideas!
I most commonly use Off/On/Busy for the statuses part. :D It'd be great to have a Busy status, so you know if someone is making a set or something. :)

Anonymous said...

Oh yes! Please add a status thing! I would love to just quickly update that instead of having to make a set or change my name!!

HoboKira said...

For status I'll use [on] or [off] so that my friends know.

Nicole said...

I think this is cool! :)
and the status thing would be conveniant because people are always pming eachother onhere, so we'd be able to tell better, who is and isn't online.

Stream said...

Great idea!! I do like to change the status from time to time, specially when I'm away for many days or I want to indicate when I want to do tagged sets or not: like Stream- (tag break) or Stream - (tag me!). I mean it's not essential but it's nice, since you can know when your friend are busy or not.

Anonymous said...

I would love to have the new things your trying I think I would like that little thing about showing when your on and off and the mentions thing it would be awesome so cant wait til the change :)

Anonymous said...

This is a really good idea!

I think the propper status' would be a good idea, it's much easier than changing your name to add "brb" or "g2g" etc. each time :)

Anonymous said...

i think its a great idea but i think your turning polyvore TOO much like tumblr :c I love the idea of tags/mentioning & I also think it would be a great idea for the status thingie xD <333

birdy ' said...

We should be able to change our URL as often as we want. It's not as if we would tell our friends before-hand.
Like tumblr, you can change it whenever you want but it cannot be made the same as someone elses.
If you are, polyvore, going to do this. Please make it so we can change I whenever.

wow!! you keep to amaze us Poly staff!! always working to make this better and better!, I love that we are going to have our own domains, I'm so excited!! and I don't post my status often, so that's not very important for me, but I know many users do, I think that having the option to choose the more important updates like: on vacation, busy, b day coming soon, among others will be great.

kiss on couturette. said...

The status seem kinda unimportant but people do it so I guess it'll be good! And I love the tagging, so much! And the custom domain thing seems cool too(:

Molly S. said...

I think that this change could be really not so great for Polyvore users. A lot of us change our names to suit our currant style/emotion/etc, and by limiting us to only one name change ever, what happens if we change who we are? What happens when we grow out of something? There's no going back, at all. I also Polyvore is/was a site for constant change, style-related, and this change is permanent, meaning we're stuck with something that in a few monts could be seriously embarrassing. Polyvore, which in my opinion has always been a place to be/express yourself and stand out, is turning into a cookie cutter website.

Victoria said...

my only problem with this, is that I would like to be able to change my username/domain whenever wanted.
what i want as a 14 year old might not be what i want in a few years.

Lea said...

I think it would be a great idea for the busy, not busy, ect. messages!

Alyson said...

Nooo, Please Polyvore. We ALL like the NORMAL polyvore. Okay. The tagging is cool but not that domain stuff. Please.

-XO,rene said...

IVE BEEN ON POLYVORE FOR 1 OR 2 YEARS DONT CHANGE. PLEASE. TAGGING OK. BUT NO OTHER STUFF. GOD NO DONT.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Polyvore should definitely have status messages! I use "online" "offline" "busy" and "brb" all the time. :)

Brooke said...

really? no thats a horrible idea.

Chelsea Renee said...

This isn't so bad. People were freaking out on the set that led to this post.

I like the idea of having a ____.polyvore.com URL and the tagging is good too because I know I've posted stuff in descriptions and you have to just hope the person sees it.

Brittanyyyyyy :DD said...

i like it!

I think all those changes are great! Perfect in fact :)

makes sense to have a simple user name and not change it all the time it will make it easier to search and find favorite set makers ,I hope I can keep mine it's been the same since I started Polyvore !

-on ,Off ,away messages don't matter to me so hands down .

Anonymous said...

this is so stupid! stop trying to be a social networking site. and to the more senior member?! i got hacked, and my account was deleted. it's not my fault. seriously, polyvore.

Patricia said...

Please don't change the name thing. I do like the ability to tag people but the status thing is a little much and were allowed to vote on that I would vote no. http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=32966775

This is terrible idea, having symbols and being able to change our usernames is one of the benefits of Polyvore, this change isn't going to be well received in the community and things should be left the same.

Anonymous said...

NO NOO

Anonymous said...

LOL THAT'S NOT FAIR THOUGH
Lets say my url was pewp cuz i currently loved pewp
Then next year i like rednecks
SO I CAN'T CHANGE TO REDNECKS
I'm sad now :-(

Anonymous said...

this is he worst idea ever. why do it? i hate it. and i know a lot of people do too

~♥♫JenXoxO♫♥~ said...

I hate the whole idea, except for the tagging. I mean like I love my symbols for my name and we can only change it once? What the heck. Why can't we just keep everything, but the tagging friends? I mean, I'm pretty sure a lot of Poly-members like their symbols and change their name a lot. And for like the status thing. In a persons profile next to their icon says bust, here, or whatever. And then to change it they can go to settings to update it and change it.

Chelsea said...

omg!i you could have a thing that shows if someone is off or on.
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/profile?id=2620677

Anonymous said...

I dont like the idea. Say someone is roleplaying & we start over, or someone gets bored of their username & have already changed it once. Then what? It's not fair to indecisive users.

Anonymous said...

Not letting us Polyvore users have symbols in our name, in my opinion, is taking away some creativity.

Anonymous said...

Please don't do this. It won't make it more personal, because everyone won't have symbols, and I know people are going to copy each other's usernames and it'll just be a big mess.

forgettingruth said...

no! this is not a good idea! polyvore will no longer be so unique. we all love polyvore the way it is right now! i'm beinging to love my username; you are NOT going to ruin my happiness. you will have so many unahppy people. BAD IDEA, POLYVORE.
♥ #teamsymbols

Maddie said...

Worst. Idea. Yet.

Anonymous said...

I truly do not like this idea. I think we can be more unique with '♥' and '(:' just 'rachel' is really boring. I don't think it matters if you know if your polyfriends are on I mean I think it would be kind of creepy. I say polyvore just stays the same and you just drop this idea.

Anonymous said...

i'd rather have the long, hard to remember URL's just so we can keep our names. i personally dont like this change to polyvore.

Anonymous said...

I like the status idea!!!!

Saralee said...

This sounds great! Great work Polyvore!

NO! DO NOT DO THIS!!! PLEASE LEAVE POLYVORE THE WAT IT IS !!!!! I LIKE TO CHANGE MY NAME I LIKE MY NAME THE WAY IT IS PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Where do we go to choose our new usernames?

Anonymous said...

this is so cool...!
thanx alot for it
and yeah status is a must =)

Unknown said...

NO DO NOT DO THIS! PLEASE I LIKE POLYVORE THE WAY IT IS!!!! PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!

forgettingruth said...

This is a horrible idea. If you end up doing this, I will most likely quit Polyvore along with more members. We all love it the way it is now. We love how we can put spaces, symbols, anything we want in our username. Our username is our pride. If you make this change, you will have so many unhappy people. For blog domains, we have Tumblr for that. Now, get serious, Polyvore.

Anonymous said...

It's really not fair =/ In my opinion, A lot of people add things like ♥ , <3, ♫ , ☺, ☻, & other symbols. I personally like the name NicoleLovesYew<3 / NicoleLovesYew♥

Anonymous said...

I love the idea of unique user names in the URL and the ability to tag people, but I think the status message idea is unnecessary and unimportant.

Anonymous said...

the status thing is a good idea but the part about the usernames isn't a good idea.

Anonymous said...

The statuses MIGHT be okay, and maybe even the tagging, but domain names? Not so much. Pretty much all of my contacts seem to hate this idea, so please don't do it.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure that the domain name thing is a good idea. Seems like a good idea at the time, but humans naturally like change, so having to stick to one url for however long, it can put a fair amount of pressure when whomever is choosing their url. Someone might love All Time Low and put their url as something relating to them, but give it a year, and they might have moved onto a different band, but they're stuck with that domain, because they might have already changed it once.

Anonymous said...

DONT CHANGE POLYVORE. its perfect the way it is now. the taggings alright, but dont change anything else. alot of people are literally going to leave this website if we dont have the freedom the have the things we have now. its rediculous.

Anonymous said...

NOOOOO!!!! Worst idea EVER polyvore!!! (no offense)

Anonymous said...

How about no. I actually like having symbols in my username. mkay'?

I remember when i entered to Polyvore a few years ago, I'm very happy with the good changes there. You are a great team, I love the new applications! xoxo

I really don't like these upcoming changes. I would like to change my username often and be able to use little symbols in them like hearts and such. When I first joined polyvore that was one of the reasons I liked it so much because I'd never seen a website that lets you do that. I really think that polyvore would be better off staying as it is. Some people, including myself, might not be able to choose a username for themselves because they won't have access to a computer from July 20 and on through those two weeks. I know that I personally would much rather be able to choose my own username rather than have others do so. Please, please, please DON'T change polyvore!

Anonymous said...

PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THE USERNAMES!

Kaitlin said...

I like the idea of the domain url thing, but I think instead of using our username (and destroying the privilage of changing our name as we please) I think we should choose different sayings for our url, like tumblr or facebook does. I also like the idea of tagging, but I think we can do without it.

Anonymous said...

I guess the status thing is cool. But I don't really see the point it. But whatever, it's not my site. Do whatever you think will make the site better.

Anonymous said...

do NOT do that. at least let us be able to change it as often as we want and to let us have symbols. then that way not as many people would hate the change

Anonymous said...

if this happens i'm so done. -.-

Anonymous said...

Yayyyy I'm so excited. Though I'm going to have a heart attack trying to come up with the perfect name xD
And YESSS to the proper status thinggy:D!

Paige said...

status' are pointless. it's not facebook. if you want to post a status, go to facebook

the domains are a good idea though!

Anonymous said...

Now I have just found out about this and I am not happy. I believe that the URLs weren't a problem and that I believe symbols in our usernames are what make the unique and allow us to express ourself in a special way. I have been a member of this site for a little over a year and I've been noticing alot of changes that are too most people on here unessasarry. Now this is just my opinion so take it or leave it but I think polyvore is not addressing the real things wrong with this site that need to be approved.

Anonymous said...

Statuses aren't needed. Its not Facebook.
The tagging and name is a great idea- but, its not cool to only be able to change your name once. People love switching it around.

Alex said...

I hate this idea.. I dont care who likes it. How are we suppost to express who we are. Our usernames do that for us. And mostly with symbols. This is so stupid. I don't know who comes up with this but who ever does is actin dumb. Why are you taking this away from us? And because of this a lot of people are going to leave polyvore. This is the dumbest idea Ive ever heard of, and what happenes if someone goes to switch their name for the 2nd time and then when they click done its spelled wrong and they can't fix it? Then what. You tell me..... This is dumb and just whatever. Check the sets about this because nobody likes your idea. So just please don't change Polyvore, we like it the way it is.

Anonymous said...

dont do this. it takes away a bunch of our creativity, if we cant change our names & stuff like that we really are limited on our imagination on this website. if you do this, i probably will not be on here for a long time. its a really bad idea.

Anonymous said...

I absolutely love the changes.
Thank you so much.
It'll be so much easier to communicate with people on here.
Thanks(:

Anonymous said...

we all like change, it would stink if we had to keep one name forever..

CaseyBr0ski said...

iIgreat! I love getting new features on polyvore, it's like watching a toddler grow teeth. I can't wait for the domains either, I'm going to think long and hard on a super good on I won't regret choosing

Candylandatvms said...

eh, i dont think we should have the status thing. If someone wants to do that, then they can get a Facebook or Twitter. Dont go clogging up the system with the pointless status garbage!

Anonymous said...

YOU PEOPLE.
They dont mean you can only change your Username once, they mean your domain name (domainnamehere.polvore.com)
*FACE-PALM*

Hannah said...

So, no more cool characters in our names? That sucks SO HARD.

Elle said...

Personally I love the status idea. What about adding a field that will include a members birthday. I know this is not a blogging site but I think all of us become "friends" on Poly and it's nice to know some information about the members we connect with everyday!

Great changes!

Anonymous said...

OhhEmmGee Hell yea this is effin great!

Anonymous said...

so far i've read alot of the comments on this blog about "personal domains" & alotttt of people really think its stupid, including me. The tagging i wouldn't mind because it will take forever just for one person to see something you created for them. i personally thing the TAGGING, and an easier way to chat with people, like a meebo kinda thing on here, because it takes less time. i REALLLY DONT LIKE this idea at all, & neither do many other polyvore people. Please DO NOT do this.!

Anonymous said...

Please, if you do the url idea, let us be able to change it whenever we want.
People change a lot. I may like glee now, so I'd make my url something glee related. But if I grew out of glee, or started being obsessed with something else, I'd be stuck with a glee url.
I like the idea, just please let us change it whenever we want!(:

Anonymous said...

I approve changes but a lot has happened lately ...
a little mess ... I do not know

Missy said...

Just no.

Anonymous said...

I like the freedom of adding symbols and special characters to my username. but i wouldn't have an issue creating a domain name without them,SEPERATE from my username. i also like being able to change my username at will, so i'd like to keep that.
as far as tagging goes, i do like that idea! It may not be a social networking site like Facebook, but its nice to connect with my "Polyfriends".

Anonymous said...

I don't like any of these ideas. Especially the domain thing. What if I want to change it? Please don't do any of these. Polyvore is fine how it is, I really don't need another tumblr.

Phreak said...

I don't like the idea at all. Polyvore is not like those social sites. Polyvore is an artistic site, why conform to those other sites? Is Polyvore affraid to be different? If we users want status updates and blogging, we'd go on Facebook or start our own blog.
Please don't make dramatic changes like this, or Polyvore might end up losing many users.

Grace said...

I HATE MOST OF THIS.
WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHANGE OUR USERNAME/URL AS MUCH AS WE WANT (LIKE ON TUMBLR)

I DON'T MIND THE STATUS/TAGGING THING, BUT I'M SUPER PEEVED ABOUT THE USERNAME CHANGING POLICY.

THIS RULE NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.

allison. said...

I LOVE THE STATUS PART & the mentioning too, but not to sure about the url part because i like changing my name sometimes.

ps. i also think you should get a chat bar like facebook, to avoid long pm messages.

Anonymous said...

Statuses are also a great idea, as long as its not a stream like Facebook/Twitter. If its just like an AIM status - available, away, idle, logged off.

Anonymous said...

I don't like the rule of the person who's been on polyvore longest gets the name. I've actually been on polyvore for three and a half years, but my account says seven months; I've been on various accounts. I think you should do first come first serve.

Anonymous said...

I don't see why we should have a Username PLUS a different URL name, that just makes no sense.
It would make more sense if we just had one name, which was our URL name and username, which you could change as often as you wanted. It would stop the confusion over different URLs to Usernames.
I understand you can't have symbols in URLS so maybe you could just not have symbols in usernames, or in the URL, not put the symbols, put all the other letters and numbers.

-Beth_Pixie

Anonymous said...

I think the status will be fun! I like it, and you don't HAVE to do it if you don't want to! It's just nice to have the option, you know? :)

Anonymous said...

i think tahat we should have statuses. tell people what we we are doing.

Anonymous said...

I think thats an okay idea, It makes it easier for people to find their friends and what not.

aprillha said...

Status updates will be useful.
Ideas based on what I see often: Available/Unavailable/Away/Busy/Online/Offline/No tags/No group requests/Contest/etc

Personal domains are a good idea, as long as we are still able to change "profile names". I would hate to have to delete/create a new account to do so. Users should still be able to add/change characters/symbols/font/etc to their profile page as it is a form of creativity and individuality.
I don't think changing the domain will affect this, but I thought it was important to voice.

b.b. said...

I think that if you are to do this, you should give members the option in their settings so they can chose if they want the number URL or their own personalized one.
Also if you decide to create that, it should be changeable whenever. I get tired of my usernames so quickly.

The status thing may be helpful.

Anonymous said...

i HATE the personal domain idea...There are times where I like to change my username to fit my mood

Anonymous said...

I really don't like the status idea. It's not necessary for a site like polyvore and I like having the option to decribe myself for others. It's not like it's not COMPLETELY easy to ignore any comments or PMs. I really don't like the idea. I like the tagging and the URL, but please leave statuses the way they are. Please! I know A LOT of people agree with me from comments I've been seeing here and in the set you've made, as well as whole sets dedicated to protest.

Anonymous said...

I think everything is good except for the domain thing. Please don't change that </3

Anonymous said...

I think all of these are great ideas. I like the idea of knowing who is online. I also think that Polyvore should be a mini social networking site.. we're all here bc we love Polyvore, Fashion, Art, etc..
If we comment on someone elses set, is there a way that we could know if they replied back to it?
Great ideas!

Anonymous said...

OOH....sounds....interesting?

Anonymous said...

Please don't do the status thing. If someone wants to know if you're online, I think it will be pretty obvious after they either get an immediate reply or they don't. If someone will be gone for a long time, they usually make a set or pm their friends anyway.

Flininia said...

I wouldn't object to the statuses BUT I do wonder if Polyvore is becoming too much like a social network, I'm also unsure if the tagging will mean more spamming or pestering people to join groups, etc. I don't mean to sound antisocial but I really don't come on Polyvore to blog to talk to people much, I feel like it should be left more personal.

Anonymous said...

I don't think this is a good idea. This isn't facebook or tumblr, and I lot of people {me included} like usernames with symbols, like ♥.

Catty said...

I like the status thing because i usually am not on during the school year and i like to tell people that so i like "busy" and "off"...i don't use them because i don't like changing my username to include that but i would appreciate that.

Anonymous said...

Status reporting is not necessary on this type of website.

»»♪♫.Performer.@.♥.!!™ said...

This is a terrible idea. Like 70% of Polyvore members change their username from time to time and because of this, we don't even get to use special symbols anymore. Don't do it!

Mina said...

No to status updates. They seem unnecessary.

I like the idea of personalized URLs, similar to what's used on Tumblr. But Tumblr lets you change your user name as often as you please. I think Polyvore should do this as well.

Anonymous said...

I think not being able to change the personal domains is kind of dumb. If style is always changing, our names should be too.

Finna said...

I don't think statuses are needed. Like many of the people have already said this is not a social website. I however love the idea of tagging. It would help so much for sets and things

»»♪♫.Performer.@.♥.!!™ said...

Polyvore crew, what have you done to the site? Polyvore is NOT a social networking site! Polyvore is a fashion design site! It is not Facebook, it is not Tumblr, it is not anything, it is Polyvore. So stop trying to make it into its polar opposite.

juliasou said...

I think it will be a nice thing to be able to tag people more easily! I hope I don't get my username changed though. I think it's unnecessary to have a status bar. This is not Facebook. We already have PM and comments to make in each set, there is no need to make Polyvore into the same boring social webs. I do think it is time to let people comment on Collections. I always find myself saying "oh what a lovely idea" or "thanks for adding me!" but I have to go and post it on a set because I can't comment on the collections. Please say no to the status bar!!!

Carolinewashereelawl said...

I don't really like this change but I can't do anything about it.But for the status I think there should be busy, off,on,shower,or taking a break.soo yeah!

PLEASE KEEP POLYVORE THE WAY IT IS!

It sounds like a lot of members like to change their user name--maybe not a good idea. In the meantime, will you please address and fix the problems with the activity feed that have been going on this week? Also, there are problems in groups with current contests not appearing on the page, and links to groups not working. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Love the both ideas!!

Anonymous said...

sounds great! :))
Statuses would be great :) Then you wouldn't wait hours for a Pm back.. cuz you could see immediately if someone's ON or OFF.. and a BUSY one would be awesome too!
xo

notanonymous said...

DONT CHANGE IT. tonsa people want it to stay the same. if you want to tell the world your eatin sushi, go onto facebook. if we want to use a long url, copy and paste is quick and easy. its a baaad idea; most people agree with that.i love the site, but changing it might ruin it. your gonna lose members; probably me.

Anonymous said...

I don't really like the idea for the url thing, because you might have something like"JustinBieber94" and then like 2yrs from now you want to change it to like"Ilovemusic".like its not really fair because our personalitys change.

Anonymous said...

I'm really excited for the personal domains and the tagging! It'll be very easy to track everything. However, I think statuses are not important. There's no reason for people to know when I'm on, you know? I'll respond to their PM, make a set, like their sets, etc. when I can/want, whether I'm on/off. I think they'd be useless. Thanks for asking our opinion, and can't wait til July 20th!

Anonymous said...

The statuses and tagging are okay, but with the personal domains we should be able to change them. Also, the domain should be separate from our user names.

Anonymous said...

I think those changes sound totally awesome!!!!!

Chelsea Renee said...

I think the status' would be a great idea. Almost all of us post things like the "Rachel- busy". :)

Karmander said...

I too feel the status update is a good idea. I do not change my name but I think others get upset when I leave for days or months at a time lol. It would be good to be able to give a quick explanation as to my whereabouts.

kurumachan said...

What, no. You guys are changing this website a lot. Domains are alright. But like most other people, I'd like to be able to change my name whenever I wanted, rather than a limit of one change. Most people like to change their username to what they feel at the time or like or whatever. This whole, "whoever ranks higher" gets the username or link they want, I feel is ridiculous. And as for you choosing it for us, I don't know. And being limited to one change isn't exactly the best idea. What if someone gets stuck with something they do not like? You guys are making so many changes. In all honesty, this is okay. But think about letting people change their name whenever they prefer, okay?

Amanda said...

this is a great idea! I also have another idea: could you possibly come up with some type of "wall" or status widget for each polyvore user to have on their profile page? it could be something like a twitter or facebook update type thing where users can post on their profile page what they are up to on polyvore (ex: -working on a set but having a bit of a creator's block.) it's not a real desire but I think it may be cool to have even as an optional widget for users.

-Amanda (aka panda girl)

Payton said...

I think is such a bad idea, no offense. But I love being able to change my username and so do A LOT of other people. The tagging in sets sounds okay, the status sounds fine, but DO NOT LIMIT us to one name, SUCH A DUMB IDEA, sorry.

Anonymous said...

i don't see the use in statuses. i don't care for other people knowing when i'm on vacation or when i'm on or busy. this is a fashion website, not a social network.

Anonymous said...

I think that the status update it a bad idea. It can be used in various innapropiate ways and with younger kids on polyvore, it wouldn't be good for them to see some things. Thank you for keeping polyvore updated(:

Anonymous said...

i really think this is stupid -.-

Anonymous said...

Its A good idea; but a bad idea. We cant put symbols in our names anymore which takes out personality. But I do like the putting weather your on or off or busy thing. It sounds useful.

Yes...yes, YES!

metalheavy said...

NO STATUSES PLEASE. I don't have a facebook and I generally avoid all websites that try to facebook-ify themselves. I think it's completely unnecessary and through my frequent use of polyvore, I only ever notice younger members trying to make set statuses or constantly updating their username. If you do make statuses, I can only hope it won't be apart of the activity feed.

I'm not really feeling the twitter-esque tags either. Polyvore should focus on adding original features, not stealing them from other popular social media outlets.

Anonymous said...

Calm down people!!! You people who are getting so upset saying ti wont be the same. Why do you care if we want to have a status message on our poly. It makes it easier for people to say busy, sick, vacation, not taking requests, no tags etc etc. If you don't like the status don't use it. I don't see how it will affect you in the long run if I have a status on my page. It seems like you guys are the ones that wont allow us freedom to have things not Polyvore! Second the URL's are great! I advertise my page everywhere and could really use the URL. I'm just tired of the negativity on here from simple things like a status message.

That's so cool!!XD All of those updates would make Polyvore much more interesting and fun!

This is like facebook but cooler but we don't need the Satus messages I love the idea! :)

I love the idea it is like facebook but we really don't need the status message and I like the tagging thing Thanks Polyvore!! :)

Some of the comments leave me to believe our usernames will change. Am I miss understanding this? I thought it would just add a URL. I can still be Memorykeeper and have that as my URL address, can't I? I also like the status idea. I once changed my username with a status behind it and while I was away another person came in and took my unsername! ugh! Therefore, I have always had to add a symbol in front on my name to keep it.

Anonymous said...

it's a bit ridiculous to have some random person click on your page and know that you're on vacation, don't you think? you don't know that person and now they know that you're on vacation. a little creepy, in my opinion.

so, i'd say no for statuses. or at least an option to be invisible/hide/not have a status.

personally i think the URL might be useful but what about (and i see this alot)the people that like to constantly change their usernames?

I don't like any of those ideas. :3

i dont think the status thing is really necessary, but i love the idea of the new url and the tagging! (:

meh, not too fond of the ideas. the statuses are totally unnecessary, same thing with the tags. this isn't facebook! i liked that polyvore was unique, and that it isnt like blogger or facebook or twitter.

I really don't think the status thing is important at all!

EllenXxXZena said...

Yes to statuses - I use Polyvore more than Facebook, so it would be nice to share fashion related things with fellow Poly addicts that I can't share with my Facebook things. I don't care weather or not I have a domain name. But I won't complain if I get one.

Anonymous said...

GREAT ideas Polyvore team!!! We're proud of you!YOU SHOULD DO THAT! :D

But we have PROBLEMS with updating RECENT ACTIVITY lately.
ex.when I go to my comments I see old comments from hours ago and I have a lot of new comments...Please fix that!

Stay the best! ;)

I think I understand the concept of 'statuses' I don't think Poly.moderators want it to be like a Facebook status or Tumblr blog text thing! It'll probably (hopefully) be like a very simple one word status like busy/online/offline/away etc. NOT like facebook (obviously) where you can type long statuses. Sigh* somepeople need a broader knowledge on the usage of the word 'status'.

P.S I agree with everyidea Polyvore!

Anonymous said...

Guys, I'm pretty sure when they said 'you can only change your name once' they were talking about the domain name, not your username. Re-read the post again before you freak out.

Trust Me On This said...

I personally like it the way it is, but if you do change it we should be able to change our URL as often as me want! You can on Tumblr, so why not on here? Whats the point of not being able to change it??
But i do like the tagging c:

Anonymous said...

I don't see why not - the statuses seem fun and all of the changes seem great! Those of you who are in denial about this, probably fear change. Polyvore is making many positive changes to the site, appreciate the fact that they take into consideration the members opinions.

caitykat said...

I really don't think that statues are important. if you do that then it will be like most other social media sites.

Lavender said...

Cool! I like the domain thing. Just wondering is the url name the same as our display name? Like, could I have my name still be displayed as Lavender with a cursive L, and have my domain name just be lavender.polyvore.com or something? (sort of like facebook?) or are url/domain names and displayed names the same? I think it would be a good idea to allow people to change their names at any time like on tumblr...just to allow people more freedom.
I think the status thing is really stupid, I really don't care what people are doing! If people really want to they can just put that info in their profile page, like in the title at the top or the bio part. A simple online/offline notification (that can be turned off by the user for privacy) would be ok though.

Anonymous said...

I think the statuses and the tagging is a brilliant idea, but please don't use the url thing. Most members like to change their names, every once in two months, like I do and if the url thing starts, well, it would be rather weird. I don't like that idea, but the other two are pretty awesome :]

Anonymous said...

Just numbers and letters? That's not very cool. I mean, it looks better with a :) or a symbol like a heart or something. if you had symbols that would be okay... cause then we couuld use our usernames we have now. but since my name's alyssa, there are like a bajillion alyssa's on here all fighting for the name alyssa. i've been a member for over 2 years, so i agree with the 'member being on longest gets the username' except i deleted my 2 yr account and made this new one to start over. so really i have been on here long... sigh. please dont do the statuses unless you allow symbols in the user name polyvore. :(

btw, my homepage never changed back. >:(

I love the idea of havin usernames and stuff bc that is ine thing that I had wished the site had. Thank you so much for creating this site and I think the status thing is a cool idea but its not absolutely necessary.. Anyways LOVE the new idea:)

Anonymous said...

Noooooo, Please dont do the domain thing. I neeed Symbols and stuff in my username ~_~ Its helps keep things more unique.

Georgia said...

It's great that you are doing the Tagging and changing URL's but I think the status thing is unnecessary because this is a fashion sight not a blog or facebook :)

Nikki said...

I honestly REALLY don't like this idea. :( I like having a unique name with cool symbols, and I don't mind the long URL. If we want to show people our Polyvore account, can't we just like write it down or put it on our phone? Or better yet just log in?! Please stop trying to change the Polyvore we love! It's amazing the way it is now!

6irly6irl said...

Super YAY!!! I love how the Poly-team always finds a way to improve Polyvore. The status updates are great and the best would be the user vanity name instead of having tons of numbers in the URL. Every single site has usernames; FB, Tumblr, Twitter, StylePage, YouTube, MySpace, And now you can even get one for Google+ by going to the gplus.to website so the users wouldn't have to remember a series of numbers. Memorizing our SS# and Licensce# is one thing but memorizing URL numbers...NO WAY!

My first status will be:
"STOP COMPLAINING & MORE STYLING LOVELIES!"

Thanks for your continued efforts Polyvore! x0x0

Anonymous said...

I love the idea of the staus' . I think you should make them [on], [off] , [be right back] or [busy]
Thanks for making the already great polyvore better (:

Anonymous said...

The URL thing is really cool. But not the whole tagging thing. People might over use it and abuse it.

Gabi said...

i don't really like this idea. i'm a person who frequently changes their username, and having a permanent domain would kind of bother me. i think it would be better if you could set a URL like they have usernames currently - you have the ability to change it subject to availability. and i'd really like it if the URL didn't have to be your username, considering i enjoy using symbols in my username that wouldn't be compatible with a URL link.
thankyou. :)

Anonymous said...

Hey Polyvore! First, thanks so much for asking your members first what they think about the status thing and wanting to get a show of hands. For me, I don't really use it, but I know A LOT of people who do, so I think it might not be a bad idea. I just wouldn't use it myself.

My only issue with the new upcoming changes is the thing about choosing a name for the url. My issue here is that what if someone decides they want to be rude and mean and use another member's name as their url? Sure, the person who has been there longer will win out, but... what if that person is the one who stole the other's name? For example, I have the same name I started with on PV. I've never changed it, nor added any status report to it. But as terrible as it is, I know there are people on PV who are mean and bullies. If they were to take my name, and they have been on PV longer than me, then what? I don't think that's really fair.

So... here's my suggestion. How about you ask all users to set their username to the one they want on the url. This way, if someone tries to steal another's name that is already in use, they can't because it will say that the name is taken. So the name "Jane" might be in use by someone and if another person tries to take it, they won't be able to. They might be able to use Jane1, but not Jane.

Then, you can have a new section that says screen name (or something like that) if they want to use another name. So maybe "Jane" likes to sometimes call herself JaneLady. And that could be changeable.

That might even take care of the whole status thing if a lot of people say they don't like it.

Ok, I'm done =) Thanks again for asking for our input!!

In addition to my earlier comment, I don't think the on/off/busy/etc status would be a bad idea. It would probably be helpful or fun or something. However, as previously stated by others, on sites like Tumblr (and I do believe Twitter, too) you aren't limited to just one domain for the rest of forever. You can change your URL as much as you want. And even then, your URL and blog title are completely separate and they're both flexible and able to be changed at any time.

☮♥Cupcɑkes said...

This would be fun, but by dashes do you mean legit dashes (-) or underscores (_)?? Also, we don't need the status update. If you're on Polyvore, you are. If not, just don't go on or delete your account. Simple as that.

Anonymous said...

If I read correctly, our url will change, but not our USER NAME. There is a difference. If it makes it easier for the Poly staff, then it should be a done deal.
And if a "status" message is added, isn't that something we can CHANGE on our own?? Or just leave it alone??? I doubt I would ever use a status message, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who would.
I don't see what all the fuss is about & why everyone is freaking out about this. Maybe you could clarify the meaning, for the younger poly users who don't understand what a url is.

Anonymous said...

plllleeeasssee no status stuff!!!!!!!! if i wanted that I'd just go on faceback!!!

I think status updates are a great idea!!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! really PLEASE!!! add the option to change the username if in the future don't like any more the username

Anonymous said...

OK, totally awesome with the pointless domain thing, but i love my unique and awesome symbolized username I have now and I don't wanna change it because you people thing it would be cool. And the fact that I cant freakin change it if I decide i don't like it in a couple years is really retarded. I mean a domain name would be cool if we didn't have to change our usual names. And the whole thing about being busy or online is cool, i actually like that! BUT Let us have a domain name like, Rachel.polyvore.com, but it is completely pointless to make us change our usernames that are cool and make us unique! I mean, Oh my god.

Anonymous said...

I don't really want people to know if I'm online or not. But otherwise a status would be cool.

Anonymous said...

Woah, woah, woah, hold up! I get that you're trying to make polyvore better and all, but I(along with just about everyone I know here) like the choice to change my username whenever I want. My current username? I'll probably be over it in a few weeks at the most. As I will be with the next one, the one after that, and the one after that. My username changes with my interests. That's one thing I LOVE about polyvore! I don't feel so pressured to choose a name, because i can change it later if i wish!

Also, I used to use Internet explorer, but items stopped showing up. I switched to Firefox and everything works just fine, but i still think this issue should be looked into if you have time :)

Thank you for reading and please take this into consideration!

XOXO
-Alex

I think everything is fine, but I'm a bit concerned about not being able to change it. Even on tumblr you can change your username.
But it seems fine, so I don't have to search through all my contacts to find one, because of all the special lettering. It's not bad, but will have room for improvement....

I dont like this idea at all!!!! I hate sights that do this and it is SO unnecessary! :( Please DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unique URLs should be first come, first serve like the real world. Not by favoritism. Bottom line.

also , i'm bummed out about the username picking dates because i will be in africa ! ):

I think the status thing is really a dumb idea if you want people not to bother write it in your own name Or on your profile page!

scatteredtracks said...

the status things don't sound that bad, it'd be easier than having to change my name to say that i'm going to be away all the time. speaking of which, i don't think there should be limits on how often we can change our name, some people like to change theirs often and not being able to might you know, interrupt creative flow or whatever. other than that i think it sounds great! much better than a whole heap of numbers!!

lilmissplainjayne said...

I really love the idea of status' because it gives me a better sense of who I can get in touch with right away. I'm excited to see these improvements

The personal domains are a terrible idea. One of the unique things about polyvore is the diverse usernames you can make, and it's great that you can chance those usernames when you grow out of them, or when you change your style, etc. Baaaaad idea polyvore.

I think having actual recognizable addresses versus number-strings sounds like an excellent plan, and while I don't use the status messages, I say it's a great idea to give folks a way to have them so that they don't lose them entirely.

NOO. I like being member number 1593500! I like being able to change my username whenever I want too, don't change! AT ALL!

Alex said...

I love these ideas. I'm definitely in for statuses. And for everyone who's not...well, don't make statuses!

Anonymous said...

Although the domain name idea is a really cool one, I don't think its good because people like changing their user names. If a person names their domain name bieberforeverxxx and leaves for a while, and comes back to the unchangable name wanting a new look, they can't get the satisfaction of seeing their new style on their website. I also think they're unecessary. Whats so great about Polyvore is that as time goes on and style changes, your username can too! the domain names delete the whole purpose of that. And I understand for older fashion people it might be more helpful, but I know it won't really help out the younger part of Polyvore, which i'd like to think theres alot of :) and i don't think the status thing is too necessary either...i know some people do it, but i thought mostly people who do roleplay do that.

Anonymous said...

yes! i would like to be able to update my status. This way it'll be easier to be on Polyvore and not get bombarded with messages :)

This isnt Facebook, this is a site to express your art or love of fashion! I do like the unique URL thing, but thats it, no status updates! Polyvore is changing alittle too too fast!

no. I change my username a lot, and i'm sure lots of other members do to, and it's not fair if you limit me to one choice. the mentioning is k, but the status bit is irrelevant. I like polyvore because it's different from all those other sites. I don't really need another tumblr & facebook.

Thank you for asking :)
I've not been using any statue for about two years now (from the time when many IDs were "stolen": as your statue were part of your ID, changing it set the previous ID free to be used). When I really need to inform some friends I'm at keyboard, I just change my info and under my name I add "I'm currently: ON (or OFF)". I think statue is not actually necessary to my opinion, but could find some utility from time to time as members are living in many time zones...
This said, I like the idea of getting my personnal PolyDomain :))

Oh grow up people. I'm sorry but the change from a number to a word isn't going to change the site! I barely use my number, it'll be much easier to go to friend's profiles now if we know their's is rachel.polyvore.com or whatever. I support the domain change. I personally don't use brb, or busy in my username, but i like the idea of on and off. :)

I think the URL's and tagging are great ideas, but we really should be able to change them anytime. People's interests change, & they get bored of the same username. Statuses are a good idea as well. I suggest : on, off, busy, on holiday/vacation. One more request: for new members, please allow the choice of the old homepage. I recently made a tip account & find it SO annoying. Thank you again for reading, & for making polyvore (:
