Polyvore Love Letters: Blog Roundup

Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! Every week we bring you a roundup of bloggers who use Polyvore sets to create great blog posts. This week our bloggers are celebrating the long weekend in style.

The vStylist blog shows off some flattering stripes.

What's a Memorial Day picnic without delicious watermelon? Sprinkles on Everything created an outfit inspired by the summer fruit.

What else makes a fun summer outfit? Surprisingly, these Crocs flats, as shown by Viva La Fashion:

White and navy made a crisp outfit combination on About All and Nothing At All. Check out her post, which includes photos of this outfit of the day.

Just for fun, Susuana Loves You (who just celebrated her first blog anniversary) created an inspiration board for her dream wedding, groom included.

Template 101: Creating a Street Style Template

We showed you that templates can be a quick way to show off your personal style photos. You can use any existing template on Polyvore or create your own. Here's a quick tutorial on how to create your own template.

The set above was created with a template that looks like this:

Here's how to create this simple Street Style template:

1. Click the arrow next to the 'Create' link at the top of your page and select 'a template'. The Editor will open.

2. Now we'll add elements to the template. In the Editor, click 'All Items'. Then scroll down to click 'Frames & Borders'.

3. Choose a border you like and drag and drop it into the editor.

4. Click the 'My Templates' tab and add a placeholder. Placeholders are spaces that you can fill with items later.

Optionally, you can rename the placeholder in the 'Hint' box. This text will not display in a set and is only used as a way to help you note what kinds of items might go into the placeholder.

5. Add more placeholders to the template as you wish.

6. You can add effects to the template. For example, if you wanted to add a tape effect to the edges of the photo, type 'Brushes' in the 'All Items' tab and add a tape border to the template.

Click 'Publish Template' when you're satisfied with the way the template looks. Then, you're done!

You can find your templates by clicking the arrow next to 'Profile' and selecting 'Items', then click the 'Templates' tab.

Let us know what you think about creating and using templates on your blog, or if you have questions or requests about templates!

Template 101: All About Street Style Templates

How much time do you spend using graphic programs to make the images in your blog look beautiful? Probably more than you can spare. Last year we introduced templates, pre-set layouts that you can use to make blogging easier and faster. You can create your own template in Polyvore and use them again and again in your blog posts. Here on the Polyvore Blogger Network blog, we will be introducing template ideas, along with tutorials on how to create them.

Today we're bringing you a few templates that you can use with street style or personal style photographs. These templates are a great way to bring variety to your style blog and to let your readers know about the items in your photographs.

The set above is created with a simple street style template:

You can easily fill in any template with personal style pictures and items:

personal style - Andy of Style Scrapbook

With templates, you can easily create a set to tell your readers about the items in your outfit. You can then quickly list these items by embedding the set in your blog post. When you embed a Polyvore set, Polyvore can automatically list the items in the format you choose, like we did with the set above.

Templates used to create these sets:
You can use any of the existing templates in Polyvore, including the three simple templates used in this post in any of your blog posts. Just click Fill This Template and drag and drop the items you want in the place holder.

Or, you can make your own template that suits your blog. Check out our quick tutorial on creating a template for street style photos.

This is the first in a series of template types we'll talk about on our blog. Let us know what you think about using templates on your blog, and if you have other template requests for us!

Image Weirdness - We're on it!

UPDATE (5/26/11): We worked on this issue long into the night, however it's taking us longer than expected to fix. We're really sorry for the inconvenience. Issues with sets appearing differently should be fixed by 6pm PT tonight, and issues with item displays should be fixed by end of day tomorrow. Thanks for being so patient!

Some of you have reported problems with sets appearing differently when published and also, that some items are displaying differently than originally clipped or saved. This is due to our newly upgraded 3rd party image library, which is the code we used to compose sets and analyze images.

We're really sorry about this and we're working as fast as we can to fix the problem. We expect images to return to normal by tomorrow night. Thanks for being patient with us.

Sorry,
The Polyvore Team

About our judges

Co-founders Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr are the Creative Director and Editorial Director of the popular online fashion magazine WhoWhatWear.com. In addition to the website's daily content, they have written two books—Who What Wear: Celebrity and Runway Style for Real Life and What To Wear, Where—and curated a shoe collection, W3 by Who What Wear.

Katherine and Hillary took some time to sit down with Polyvore to tell us more about the behind-the-scenes details to their success.

Who What Wear has a successful website, two books, a shoe line, Shop The Closet, and so many great features. Tell us more about what you do at Who What Wear?

While we do have lots of interesting projects, our day-to-day focus is always on creating the best stories for WhoWhatWear.com. That means collaborating with amazing Guest Editors like Kate Bosworth, Jessica Alba, and Leighton Meester, shooting original fashion and celebrity editorials, and crafting of-the-moment fashion and beauty trend stories. We're also currently working on a major redesign for the site -- it's amazing, we can't wait to launch it -- and planning for our 5th anniversary, which is coming up this fall!

What's a typical day like at the Who What Wear office for you?

There's never really a "typical" day at the Who What Wear office! We're always researching, designing, reporting, and writing our daily content -- so much work goes into each story -- plus there's often a photo shoot going on (usually for the products we feature, but models may be involved too), meetings galore (editorial, advertising, and overall business development), and appointments with various showrooms/publicists to see or re-see various collections. Katherine always has to oversee and edit potential products for upcoming stories, while I always have lots of copy to write and/or edit, so there's always a ton going on!

Where do you find your fashion inspirations?

We get fashion inspiration from so many different things: amazing editorials (vintage ones, more often than not), street-style photos, and the amazing way our favorite tastemakers wear their clothes. We also are pop-culture fiends, so there are lots of movie/musician references that fly around the office. Archival photographs of our favorite style icons are really important too.

How do you find your own voice when so many people write about fashion?

Finding your own voice is really something that is a product of two things: training and perspective. From the get-go, we knew we wanted to create something that was informative, inspirational, and, above all else, accessible. As former magazine editors, we knew how to create stories—that's what we did at ELLE for years—so we always urge people to really pay their dues and work for an established media company to get hands-on training. In terms of perspective, we never wanted to talk down to women—which happens all the time in the fashion world—we just wanted to explain things in a friendly way. Our hope was that, when equipped with inspiring images and specific information/details, that our readers would want to create their own versions of the latest trends.

What advice do you have for people who want to make a living writing about fashion?

Intern, intern, intern. Write, write, write! We cannot stress how important it is to get as much training as you can. Get an internship at any publication you love and tell your editors that you are dying to do anything. When you've proven yourself as the sort of hard-working intern who can tackle any challenge, figure out a way you could contribute. Start small: no one is going to give you a huge feature story on a celebrity, but they might let you cover an event, write product descriptions, or help research certain stories. At the same time you're working the professional angle, be sure to have your own outlet for writing and creativity. That means start a fashion blog, where you demonstrate your take on fashion and create your own stories. It will show you're truly serious about working in the industry and enthusiastic—two very good things!

Interview with RegallyBlonde

Today's interview is with RegallyBlonde, who has been an active Polyvore member for nine months. As an art lover, she blends fashion, design, text, and musical influence beautifully in all her sets.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, I'm Rebekah. I'm 26 years old and live in Sacramento, CA.

What are your personal aspirations?

I've been interested in the idea of being a textile designer or a visual merchandiser for a while. But when it comes down to it, I would be content creating art in my own studio.

How has Polyvore affected your life?

When I stumbled upon Polyvore, I could not believe there was such a website that combined everything I love including fashion, art, and music in the most creative way. Since I was little, I've been interested in art and fashion. In college, the two subjects were very separate from each other. Yet I was constantly trying to find ways of combining the two. It is because of Polyvore that I am able to express my creative passions so clearly and now I find myself learning more about today's fashion industry along with my personal sense of style.

Describe your personal sense of style.

I keep my outfits modest and demure while adding a fresh and modern twist, whether it be a dynamic color combo, an unexpected mix of textures, or an interesting design. I like to wear simple and classy pieces that have stood the test of time and mix in a few trendy items here and there.

What are some of your favorite brands?

3.1 Phillip Lim, Chloe, Rag & Bone, Vanessa Bruno, Kate Spade, Miu Miu, and Marc Jacobs.

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

My only suggestion for Polyvore is to create a more sophisticated rotating tool. Many times when I try to rotate an image 90° or 180° the edges aren't clean so I end up using the tool multiple times in order to get perfect edges. Other than that, I am completely impressed with all that Polyvore has to offer! I am so happy to be a part of this amazing community!

Blogger Spotlight: Blair from Atlantic Pacific

be a Polyvore Queen

We've seen San Francisco blogger Blair Eadie of Atlantic Pacific pop up all over our top sets lately. She has inspired many sets on Polyvore and is also featured this month on the ModCloth blog. We love Blair's style -- she mixes sophisticated pieces with her own eclectic touch. We sat down with Blair to found out more about her style and her blog:

Tell us a little about yourself: where do you live and what do you do by day?

I live in San Francisco, CA, but I am originally from the East Coast. I blog as a hobby and by day I am a merchant at Gap Inc. for women’s dresses & outerwear. Fashion and retail are such a big part of my life- just the way I like it!

How did you get started blogging?

I really enjoyed reading other blogs- and my boyfriend suggested I start a personal style blog. With his help I just began taking pictures of what I wear everyday. Most pictures are quick snaps we take on our way to and from work or hanging out on the weekends.

How would you describe your style and where do you get inspiration?

I would say my style is quirky. I have a broad range of style interests, which causes me to experiment with different looks. I think inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, but it helps that part of my job is organizing editorial tears, researching blogs, and identifying trends.

How do you get such great pictures for your blog?

My boyfriend takes most of my pictures. He has never taken photography classes and really never handled a camera until about a year ago. He has a great natural eye and is creative by nature, so I am lucky to have such a fantastic partner.

What do you like best/worst about fashion blogging?

The creative, passionate people I have made connections with is by far the most rewarding thing about being a blogger. Whether it is meeting a fellow blogger, someone in the fashion industry, or a passionate reader they all have given me a different perspective on blogging and the fashion world. I have learned so much from the new friendships I have made.

The worst part (if I had to say there is a bad thing) is the fact that having a blog can be all consuming. From Twitter to e-mail to the communities I am involved in it seems like you never really take a break. I absolutely love it though, so no complaints here.

Thanks, Blair!

So take a moment and check out Atlantic Pacific to see more of Blair's daily style. Inspired by other bloggers you've found on Polyvore? Let us know!

Interview with StreetWhit

Today's interview is with StreetWhit, who's been styling up a storm on Polyvore for the last 4 months! Since she's been a member, her sets and contest entries have been blowing us away. Most recently she placed in Kate Betts' style influencer challenge.

Here are some of her sets:

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Whitney and I'm 23 years old. I'm currently searching for a job in the fashion industry!

What are your personal aspirations?

I would love to work in fashion someday, whether it's design or merchandising. I enjoy everything about it and I believe that it would be a great fit for my lifestyle! I think that being a buyer or a visual merchandiser would be a great career.

How has Polyvore affected your life?

I looked forward to being on Polyvore every day. It has really become a creative outlet in my life. Whether I'm stressed or I just want to express myself in a certain way, I rely on Polyvore. And when I say that I am addicted, I'M ADDICTED! It's actually made me want to do something with fashion graphic design (thanks Polyvore team!) I also love the way Polyvore reaches out to the fashion community and allows us to interact with the fashion obsessed all over the world!

How would you describe your personal style?

Very street, hence the Polyvore name 'StreetWhit'! I always try to walk out of the house with an edgy, chic outfit on. There always has to be some sort of twist to my outfit, whether that means pairing a plain oversized sweatshirt with black skinny jeans, booties, and a diamond necklace or rocking my leather jacket with a babydoll dress and high heels. I love the element of surprise in a street outfit.

What are some of your favorite brands?

Balenciaga, Donna Karan, Proenza Schouler, and Burberry have my heart!

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

For feature requests, I really can't think of anything at the moment because you all have everything a fashionista needs!

Denim jackets are back, Charlotte & Elisabeth reports. What to wear with a denim jacket? How about a simple tee and shorts?

If you're wondering how to get a celebrity's look for less, bloggers in the Polyvore community have some good ideas. Hello Doll Face just reimagined Jennifer Garner's casual look for a more affordable budget.
