Interview with ♥Rachel♥

Today's interview is with ♥Rachel♥, who has been a member of Polyvore for four years! She's a great inspiration within the Polyvore community and has won several contests to date. With over 3 million set views, she's truly an uber-creator with an eye for both fashion and art.

Here are some of her sets:

Happy saturday =)

Life and Beauty

Gypsy

Tell us about yourself.

I'm 26 going on 27, and a bookkeeper/student. I live in Orange County, California with my husband and three dogs. I work for a small non-profit art organization and we focus on bringing art programs to the Los Angeles area community. In October we're shutting down the streets of downtown Los Angeles for a politically charged parade featuring slogans from 30 contemporary artists! It's a dream job and I'm so lucky to be able to participate in these amazing programs.

What are your personal aspirations?

I want to continue learning about fashion and expanding my wardrobe. My current job consists of meeting very important people and occasionally celebrities. I don't want to be clueless about fashion around them.

How has Polyvore affected your life?

Polyvore has significantly changed my life. Since I found Polyvore almost four years ago, there's literally only one week I wasn't on the site and that's because I was in Europe with poor internet connection. Polyvore has helped me find my current job, led me to great people, and allowed me to express myself with fashion and art. I've met two of my Polyvore contacts in real life and I now consider them close friends. I've had the opportunity to win fabulous prizes and learn about what's in style. I'm able to use the shop page to help me find items within my price range. Essentially I don't know what I'd do without Polyvore.

Describe your personal sense of style.

I love jeans! I wear them almost everyday, unless it's summer. I love to dress them up with cute boots, flats, or heels. Since I live near the beach, there's a very laid back vibe. My outfits usually reflect that attitude.

What are some of your favorite brands?

Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, H&M, Kate Spade, Betsey Johnson, Coach, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs.

You just recently won the Summer Music Festival Chic with G by GUESS contest and you're going to Lollapalooza in Chicago! How excited are you?

There are no words to describe how excited and grateful I am for Chicago and Lollapalooza! This trip is really going to make my summer amazing. Foo Fighters are at the top of my list for must-sees while at Lollapalooza. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win such amazing prizes!

Got any feature requests for the Polyvore team?

Implementing a color organizer search option for my items that I have already saved and tagged. Sometimes I'd like to look through my tagged accessories by color. I've been on Polyvore for a long time and I've saved so many items. This would really help me search through my items when I'm creating a set.

Creating Quick Slideshows with Polyvore

Did you know you can create quick slideshows with Polyvore and embed them in your blog posts? All you need is an idea, and you can quickly curate items from Polyvore and create a slideshow for your blog.

How to create a slideshow with Polyvore:

1. Choose a topic and create a collection featuring items you find on Polyvore. For example, let's say you want to create a slideshow of friendship bracelets. Click Create Collection from the Create drop down menu and search for "friendship bracelets" in the All Items tab.

2. Add items you like to the collection and click publish.

3. In the collection, click Embed on your blog. You'll see options to choose the image size and number of items that the slideshow displays at a time.

4.  To create a slideshow like the one in this blog post, choose your image size and select 1 for the "Number of Items."

5. Copy and paste the code into your blog post.

Then, you're done!

There are lots of possibilities to create interesting content when you embed a collection as a slideshow. You could feature a series of items like we did with the friendship bracelets, or create a slideshow where you mix items with sets. For example, check out this slideshow that features items and sets on how to style a kaftan.

We're always looking for comments and feedback to make our tools more useful for bloggers. So let us know how you use slideshows on your blog!

Sorry about last night's misfire

Dear Polyvore community,

We’re so sorry about last night’s misfire. Due to a caching bug, we accidentally turned on every single experimental feature that we’ve been working on for the past few months. The result was a confusing mishmash of features, including some features that we never plan to actually launch.

As we outlined in this post back in March, we are working on some larger site design changes, but our plan was always to incorporate the community’s feedback first. When we asked for Bay Area Polyvore members on Twitter and Facebook a few weeks ago, it was to find people who could come to our office for usability testing. The next step is for us to make changes based on their feedback, and then invite 100 members into a beta test. We would never have intentionally rolled out such a drastic change without running it by our community first.

We’re really upset that this upset everyone. Thanks to everyone for your patience and love.

Love,
The Polyvore Team

Style Influencer Series: Sasha Charnin Morrison

Style Influencer Series

Sasha Charnin Morrison is the Fashion Director at Us Weekly and has more than 20 years of fashion magazine experience, working for such publications as Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen, Mirabella, Vanity Fair, and Allure. She lives in New York.

Why did you want to become a stylist?

I was told by an old boss, Nancy Hessel Weber, when I was an accessories editor at Seventeen that in order to move up and around, I would have to get out of my comfort zone and start pulling clothing for shoots and styling. And she was right. I also was raised in show business and when we started styling celebrities, I was really at ease with them and knew how to work well with people. I have had great success putting our models and celebrities at ease and working with them to create a look that they’re comfortable wearing. At Us Weekly, I shoot everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Ricki Lake to Jennifer Grey to a Real Housewife. I love the diversity.

What's been your favorite professional moment?

My dance audition for the video "Love Is a Battlefield". The highlight, along with being in and making that video, was when I was leaving my audition, the costume designer followed me to the store that I was working at - Acrobat on Columbus Avenue. She bought my audition outfit - which I sold at that store - and other pieces for Pat Benatar which ended up in the video. Benatar’s "bus look", NY "streets look", and "running away look" was basically what I wore to the audition.

Who do you get your inspiration from and, who are your favorite designers?

I love referencing old pictures, movies, posters, and magazine covers like Rolling Stone from the early 1970s. I am a firm believer in absorbing as much style and fashion history as possible. I’m a huge pop junkie. Designers are great tailors and storytellers, and Yves Saint Laurent is probably my top for every reason. I love Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford Gucci collection, Alber Elbaz, Riccardo Tisci, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, The Olsens, Margareta van den Bosch, Ann-Sofie Johansson, and the H&M team, as well as Zara and Topshop. And do not get me started on Azzedine Alaia. Swoon.

Put your celebrity styling skills to the test and enter Sasha Charnin Morrison's style influencer challenge. Sasha will choose three winners to recieve a signed copy of her book, Secrets of Stylists: An Insider's Guide to Styling the Stars!

Bloggers Notebook: Lookbook with The Emerald Closet

Adria Saracino and Travis Querec are the duo behind the Seattle style blog, The Emerald Closet. Every Friday on The Emerald Closet, you can find lookbooks that feature a series of great finds from these stylish bloggers. Here is an example of a Covet Friday lookbook that Adria and Travis put together using Polyvore:

Cropped Shirts & Skirts

We caught up with The Emerald Closet to talk more about the Covet Friday section and their blog:

Tell us about The Emerald Closet -- why did you start the blog and what can readers expect to find?

The Emerald Closet is a fashion blog for both men and women that highlights street style, offers fashion advice, covers news/trends, and provides a glimpse into our own personal style. I've always been the go-to person for style advice for my friends, I thought it'd be a good idea to get all my ideas and inspirations down in the blogging space. If I could help people in my circle, that meant I could help others, right?

I follow a ton of fashion blogs and thought I could represent a unique voice in the space. I thought that there is a severe lack of street style blogs covering Seattle, and I haven't seen blogs that offer personal styling services, which we are really excited to roll out!

How do people respond to your Covet Friday section?

We've gotten great feedback on our Covet Fridays sections. We like to introduce people to brands or looks we love that readers might not typically know or think of. One of my favorites was our Intro to Color for the Faint of Heart post, because it is a topic near and dear to my heart. Since I always stick to neutrals in my closet. I wanted to let our readers who might share my sentiment how to break free of the chains.

We also covered NY designer Lauren Moffatt for one of our Covet Fridays. She actually saw the post and offered to give an exclusive interview for our readers. We thought that was really great and confirmed that starting Covet Fridays was a good idea.

Thanks, Adria and Travis!

We're always looking for inspiration from our blogger community, so be sure to comment and send us ideas about how you're using Polyvore on your blog!
