Tell us your name, age, profession and what you typically wear every day
My name is Emily Lin, I'm 19, and I'm a sophomore studying fashion and textile design at University. I usually wear a cardigan (even if it's warm), black and brown, and Minnetonka Kilty moccasins. Today I wore a knit burnout top tucked into a gray button down chambray skirt, with a black oversized cardigan layered over. I topped it off with a vintage leather belt, and an octopus necklace. I carried my DSLR in my vintage black and brown faux leather bag, and on my feet were (surprise!) moccasins.
Where do you live, and what trends are big there?
I live in North Carolina, where the weather can be notoriously inconsistent. People from all over attend my university, so there are different styles and fashions. Many of the girls like to wear bright colors, aztec prints, Jack Roger sandals and Nike shorts. In the winter, Patagonia sweaters, pea coats, skinny jeans and boots are very popular. Of course, North Carolinians love their denim and boots!
What is your favorite brand/designer? What do like about that brand?
Even though I study fashion, I didn't grow up with much of a fashion background. Instead, I had more of a "Star Wars" and geek culture background, thanks to growing up in between two brothers.
But I loved Luella! I'm so sad it's gone. I loved how their clothes all embodied this youthful and energetic attitude, but kept a certain sweetness about them.
Which celebrity has great style? What do you like about their style?
I love seeing celebrity street style, when they're not all done up by stylists and when their raw personal styles are showcased. I love, love, LOVE Alexa Chung. She's creative, smart and funny. Everything she wears is always looks comfortable yet stylish.
What are your personal aspirations/goals?
Unlike most people, I don't have a set plan. We'll see where the road takes me! I know that I want to finish school and then get a job in fashion. I really want to help people through fashion, not tell them "You should wear this, this will make you beautiful," but show them that they are beautiful and that their personal style can be discovered and make them feel confident and good about themselves.
How has Polyvore affected your life?
Polyvore has changed my life and I'm not just saying that! I started using Polyvore during Christmas break in 2007. In 2011, when I graduated from high school and applied to university, I was invited to partake in an interview for a new program. I told the university how I started developing my knowledge of fashion through Polyvore. They accepted me shortly after and now I've finished my first year. Currently as I speak (or type), I'm in Taiwan for a textile internship.
Also, Polyvore has helped me make friends all over the world. I'm constantly encouraged and inspired by them. I care for them dearly.
How would you describe your set style?
It's hard to explain. My sets look like they've come out of a scrapbook or shadowbox. They're usually inspired by the photographs I feature in my sets. From the photos I find my color palette and apply them to the products in the set.
How often do you sign on and what is the first thing you do when you sign on?
I'm always signed in! Every time I turn on the computer, I check Polyvore. First thing I do is check my messages and talk to my friends. Then I browse through everyone's creations.
What is your favorite Polyvore feature?
The changes and improvements Polyvore has made in the past five years are incredible. I love the custom crop option! So innovative! It gives users the opportunity to virtually cut and DIY their items. I think it's absolutely genius when I see a set maker "cut" off their sleeves and whatnot.
Describe your personal sense of style.
My personal style is hard to label, but my professors called it "whimsical," if that counts! Things like girly, floral prints, draped knits, grungy oversized tops and structured woven shorts can all be found in my closet. I add personality to each outfit with cutesy jewelry found on Etsy or eBay.
I usually shop at thrift stores and shops like H&M, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21, because they carry all sorts of on-trend styles, but at a reasonable price.
