Closing the Style Advice/Ask Section

UPDATE 2/1/2012: Style Advice has been closed. You can see the archives here. Thank you for contributing to our Ask section.

UPDATE 1/15/2012: We want you to know that we are listening and reading all of your comments. We care about you, the community, very much and that's why closing the Style Advice section was a hard decision for us, too. Ultimately, we decided this was the best for the whole Polyvore community. Please try to keep the Style Advice experience positive for everyone while the section is still open. Thanks again for your contribution and support.

Dear Polyvore Community,

We love that you are style gurus who generously share your tips on how to look great. You show us in your sets how to style awesome outfits, and you've showed us in the Style Advice, or Ask section.

Now it's time for us to ask you to concentrate all your amazing styling powers in your sets, comments and collections because sadly, we will be closing down the Style Advice/Ask section in January.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision. We reached it after realizing that we haven't been able to give that section of the site and its participants the attention or recognition they deserve. We've decided to spend our time really focusing on improving features that make a difference and that make Polyvore the best web and mobile experience it can be for you.

Any sets you have created for Style Advice answers will still appear on your profile, and any saved items will still appear in My Items. Your badges will also remain on your profile. However Style Advice/Ask will be phased out over the coming weeks.

  • After January 17, we will stop accepting new questions.
  • After January 31, the Style Advice/Ask section will no longer be available on the site.

We'd love to see your questions and expertise reach a larger audience on dedicated sites like Yahoo Answers or Quora. (If you know of another great style advice site, please let us and your fellow Polyvore members know!)

Thank you for all your generosity and creativity in providing great style advice in the Ask section over the last three years. You continue to inspire us and we’re looking forward to more of your styling tips through your sets, comments and collections!

Love,
The Polyvore Team

That's pretty absurd if you ask me. I'll be deleting my account come January 31st.

Anonymous said...

I'm very disappointed by this news. I feel that the ask section was one thing that made the site a community and more of a social network rather than just a site posting sets and outfits.

If someone was smart, they'd start up another site with the Ask concept that is being lost.

Anonymous said...

This is what I used polyvore for and loved it. Bummer! Probably won't use it anymore.

Anonymous said...

i will also no longer be using polyvore, the ask section was the best and only part I enjoyed...

Anonymous said...

Wow, really ridiculous. This is one of the reasons I loved Polyvore so much. Too bad. WHY couldn't you have ASKED your READERS first before making this decision?

Anonymous said...

Wow , such pOwerful words! Will you shutup now?

Princess Review said...

This is really disappointing. I love the Ask section, it has given me some really good advice and inspiration. I'll still create sets but I won't log on as often anymore.

OMG polyvore !! y would you close this down ! i could write a whole essay on it why you shouldnt! Im officially not gonna be going on polyvore after it closes! This is really sad !!!! DONT BRING IT DOWN ! i love this website it makes me see the trending styles from other people! How they would style something i would never have thought of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU COULD DO BETTER POLYVORE !!

Anonymous said...

Please don't do this! I didn't even know this was a possibility! JUST DROP the idea! If you don't agree with me, take a look at all the other comments! Seriously, I LOVE that section of Polyvore. I love to see other people's opinions on things, and I really enjoy giving style advice. As I type this, you are losing hundreds, maybe thousands, of members that have enjoyed Polyvore just for the"Ask" section. Please rethink this decision!

Anonymous said...

Noooooo! Please don't!! Please! The Style Advice section is the only reason I get on Polyvore! Why would you want to close it down???? I'm begging you to reconsider this decision! We need no more attention than what you've been giving!

Anonymous said...

Polyvore i hope you realize how many people are going to stop using polyvore now that you have so decidedly to shut down the style advice section. As much as I love making sets, The style advice helped me alot in my everyday life for inspiration. Now that you have decided to close it, I may just stop coming on here because of this stupid decistion :((((

Liizeth Malik Bieber said...

I like how more people will be getting on less because of disabling the advice section. Polyvore deserves it, what is the point of this? Smh.

iheartkitties said...

I am so mad about this! Making sets is fun but the best part is the style advice, super bummed out right now. This change is NOT useful at all and really bad.

Anonymous said...

I wont be using Polyvore as much now. That was a HUGE help to me because people would answer and give me reasonably priced options. I also love helping people because I love it when people help me :( BOO Polyvore

Anonymous said...

This is a very stupid decisions as a business. definitely a large lose on consumers both future and present. moreover this seems to be a sad attempt at becoming synonymous with facebook, a trend being followed by most modern websites

Morgan said...

This is so stupid i love the advice portion

but W.E. they'll come to their senses and realize it was a stupid choice and bring it back i just dont understand why

Anonymous said...

This is the dumbest reasoning. We don't use that part for recognition from you but for helping, and being helped by, our poly ore community. Like many, I visit that section on a regular basis. I love building sets but due to the complete lack of respect this shows for such an integral and loved part of poly ore for ridiculous reasoning, I will not be making use of polyvore any longer. I hope you reconsider this terrible decision.

Anonymous said...

are you kidding me right now????? that was the best part.. what will they change now? the create option?????

Anonymous said...

I for one am happy about Polyvore's decision. The "Style Advice" section was full of redundant fashion questions/advice. Most of the questions were pointless or could have easily been answered with personal research. The core of polyvore was to CREATE SETS and INSPIRE others through fashion. NOT ask dumb and pointless questions about what sweater you should wear to school... Thanks Polyvore!

Anonymous said...

i can't believe this! this was one of the best parts of polyvore. i love asking and giving advice on here. its nice to have other opinions from users you don't know and it helps us find users similar to us. it was probably the most helpful and useful thing on polyvore. i'm really going to miss it and i don't think i will be coming on the site that much anymore because of it. i love making sets, but it can take awhile, whereas questions are simpler. keep it open!

SweetBuzzingBee said...

I have been on Polyvore for about a year now for the purpose of making sets and to improve my personal style. However, recently (around about this fall) I have started using the Ask section and find it a great tool. While there are things like Yahoo Answers, asking and answering style advice on these sites can be difficult. Plus, the Ask section made the Polyvore community much more of a community. While I will stay on Polyvore, I will still find this entire affair a real shame.

Zoe Wilson said...

i think that it's really sad that all these people are quitting polyvore just because the style advice is shutting down. as much as you may like the style advice, it's not the main feature of polyvore, and half the questions didn't have anything to do with fashion. they were just a bunch of junk like "follow my PLEEEEEEASE!!!!!!" i joined polyvore for the sets, and the amazing community, and i will stay for as long as can. to all of those people who don't like this, just please please please be quiet. if you want to complain, please do it in silence. i respect your right to leave feedback, but this has gone to far. this is not your website, even if you are a member of it. you do not have the power to make these decisions. and seriously, what good will leaving all of these hateful and sarcastic comments do? once they've made the decision to close down the style advice bord, they're not that likely to change their minds. so please. just stop.

Anonymous said...

Style advice is the main thing I used on Polyvore. Its helped me out so many times. This is pointless, and honestly just down right stupid. If you know that we use it a lot, we shouldn't delete it. :/ I might close down my account for this, this is ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

That's so disappointing! But I'm excited to see the other new features you'll add.

Anonymous said...

Really?? This is bogus. Now what am I gonna do when I need help? I can't always message people and- UHH, THIS IS JUST CRAZY.

Anonymous said...

I am really disappointed that the ask section will be closed. It was one of the main reasons I joined. Like many other polyvore users I will most likely stop visiting the site. It is certain that membership/site use will drop because of this action. I hope that the polyvore staff will reevaluate this.

"Anonymous said...

who would seriously recommend yahoo answers for fashion advice? that's like telling me to go to a first-grade classroom for help writing my master's thesis."

ha haha ha THIS exactly.^^
But in all seriousness, those other sites do not have the necessary functions to serve as a fashion advice forum, such as adding pictures, designating price range, designating the occasion, etc.

I somewhat like making sets, but I've been on Polyvore for 4 years now and making sets does get old sometimes. The Style Advice section is great for getting inspiration and help. It seems a lot of people will be leaving because of this decision. I'm not sure if I'll delete my account, but I will definitely not really be visiting anymore unless I get a random urge to create a set...

Anonymous said...

If you do this I will QUIT Polyvore and tell everybody that I know that has one to STOP using it I will post it everywhere also. You can't STOP this section because it helps everybody that needs advice. There is NO need to shut it down. I CAN and WILL get a lot of people to QUIT and give BAD REVIEWS any where I can, AND YOU CAN BE SURE OF THAT!!

Faby Drapeau said...

How could you guys do this?
I mean... Polyvore will lose alot of members because of the closing down of this section on the website...

It´s you guys´s loss...

Just look at all the comments agaisnt it...

DON´T DO IT! DON`T SHUT DOWN THE ASK SECTION!

Anonymous said...

noooo! please dont do it, this section was the only reason why i joined polyvore,i like to give advice and get advice.

Anonymous said...

"Anonymous said...
Thank you Polyvore for giving us the biggest credit by shutting us down! You never do any useful changes, but this has just crossed the limit. You have no valid reason to close the section. You have absolutely no right. We can't enter contests with prizes and now this? P"

I agree with this. The ask section was one of my favorites because I could ask for advice for events i was unsure of. It was a great way to see other's creativity.

Anonymous said...

NOOOOOOOO, I loved the Ask Section and its one of the best parts of Polyvore. I hope you are seriously reconsidering this idea.

Anonymous said...

I'm devastated. The style section on polyvore was the only place I could get style advice from a wide audience. I am really disappointed.

Anonymous said...

polyvore you will really regret it!! you will loose many members by doing this because this was the best part of Polyvore.

Anonymous said...

Whatt!! no!!! this was my favorite part of polyvore!!i loved hearing peoples advice and giving mine. How will i get ideas on what to wear to school and parties!! sorry to say but i will probably not visit polyvore anymore

Anonymous said...

This is just ridiculous. Seriously? I agree with the other anonymous people saying that you never make good changes. The fact that you changed the home page over 12 months ago was crazy and that's still making me come on Polyvore less. Now this? After years of helping people out and asking for last-minute help I hope you all reconsider before you all lose a big amount of lovely people as shocked and angry as I am because I will leave Polyvore too. I strongly agree with Deidra's comment too, because Yahoo answers is nothing compared to the help of other people on Polyvore. You're shutting down one of the best if not the best section of Polyvore. Well done, idiots.

Anonymous said...

this is very sad. I literally see this right after i just got into the ask section.

Anonymous said...

I am so upset...this was the only reason I joined polyvore,I loved this site just for this section and i loved seeing people's advices and giving my own.I am not going to use polyvore that much after this.

Geri Cooper said...

This makes very little sense as most people love this feature. I personally have used it many times, both to answer questions and to get advice. Please reconsider- this is one of the only ways to get input of this kind.

I am so upset...this was the only reason I joined polyvore,I loved this site just for this section and i loved seeing people's advices and giving my own.I am not going to use polyvore that much after this.

Anonymous said...

This is the only part of Polyvore. So looks like i won't visit Polyvore anymore :)

Anonymous said...

WHY?It's actualy my favorite part Polyvore. It helps me to figure out diffrent outfit problems. Without the Style Advice/Ask section I would have no clue how to stlye some now major pieces in my closet. I will how ever continue using polyvore because it gives me style ideas, but i am not happy about the change.

Anonymous said...

Also what i liked about the ask section was it had pictures and nice people and good answers.

Anonymous said...

This was the only reason I actually used the site!! People just copied sets and followed trends. With Ask we were able to be ourselves and not worry. We could give our own advice and see who liked it. If you needed help with an outfit, Ask helped. When you got votes or best answers it is the best feeling ever to know people appreciate your fashion. To me this idea is plain out dumb. I guess I won't come on anymore, unless this changes. I'll stay for a little while to see if it stays. Or else Byee, just saying you're going to lose a lot of other users according to these comments.

Anonymous said...

I'm quite disappointed to think that you would close one of the most popular sections of the site down because we don't get enough recognition. But that's where you're wrong. We get positive feedback from our answers and generally give out good style advice when someone wants it. I really hope you re-think this decision, for the sake of all users of the site. And I don't think I'll be visiting the site much more either.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that's surprising, and incredibly disappointing. Style Advice was my favourite part of Polyvore. I only get time and inspiration to make a full set once in a blue moon but I use Style Advice all the time. I honestly probably won't visit Polyvore much if at all once it closes down. Please reconsider, it's a very useful and fun section of the site!

Anonymous said...

This makes me sad...wahhh! Please don't take away Ask!!!!!!

Cuddlebuglovee said...

The ask/advice section is a HUGE part of my use of polyvore. It gives me help for when I simply don't know what to do and I love it because it opens the door to talk to other users on polyvore that I normally would not have come across if not for them answering my questions. Please reconsider this decision.

Guys, Polyvore's doing what it thinks is best to make the other parts of the sites better.
- They have really been nothing but good to us, they can't change to make everyone happy, but they're trying to do so. They haven't changed or updated anything to do with the 'Ask' section since they put it out. Make a group or something if you wanna ask about style device.

yashasui said...

WTH!!! I'm actually upset that you would be closing this down. A big part of my love for Polyvore was this section. I got so many great ideas for fashion and advice when I was in a fashion rut. I don't think I will continue to go onto Polyvore anymore. Sorry!

Anonymous said...

The ask section is the best part of the website... I love to give advice and to see if people agree with my style. Probably will not be on the website now... Big mistake

Anonymous said...

well, definitely not coming back here anytime soon.

Ruby Tuesday said...

LAME! The Ask section was the most interactive and fun part about Polyvore. I'm definitely not going to be on this website as much anymore. Good luck to you guys in your future, but I just hope you realize that taking away the only real interactive part of this website will really decrease your community. The internet loves being able to connect and communicate and without Ask, we will no longer be able to do that on Polyvore.

Anonymous said...

I think it would be a mistake to do this, it seemed to be a great feature and I would be disappointed to see it go!

Anonymous said...

whats the point we all love it and it dosent cost money does it? I don't think so, so don't close it down you'r losing so many users and its a part where people can just ask someone for help.

Anonymous said...

This seems like a bad April fools joke and its not even April.

Anonymous said...

I think that you should keep style advice. I was not an avid poster but i believe that other people really liked using it and it was really helpful and nice :). Lots of people might be upset and disappointed and that's like taking away making sets for the rest of us.

Anonymous said...

I know this is just going to be lost in the sea of comments, but I'll make it anyways. This is a HUGE letdown, its the only reason I chose to make an account with Polyvore. so I am guessing that I will delete my account pretty soon, I hope that Polyvore decides to make it available again.

Anonymous said...

Ugh this sucks, I really loved the style advice! How am I supposed to know what to wear on a daily basis now? UGH! POLYVORE WHY!?!

fashion-by-k said...

Wow. Just wow. Seriously, this is what I use the kost! Especially now that high schools coming up. Now who to turn to? Yahoo Answers doesn't have the quality nor the quantity of style advice needed. Isn't there anything we can do to keep it open? I think it's unanimous that we're not looking for recognation; we're looking for advice and ways to help others. What did we do wrong? This feels like a punishment.

Anonymous said...

i will most likely stop using it polyvore now. those new changes better be worth it.

Kumi said...

This is literally one of the worst ideas. One of the main purposes of Polyvore is being able to ask for style advice and get answers from the community. I'm sure not going to be on Polyvore as much now, since the best feature will be lost.

ArtisticBiscuit said...

Thank you for slowly making Polyvore a less enjoyable experience.

I don't see why you are getting rid of it.
So many people use it.
It don't matter if you don't update the section. WHY! BECAUSE IT IS FINE THE WAY IT IS.=[
no need to even update the section...pure laziness anyway. I've not seen any updates on this site for ages anyway.

Couldn't you have let the people on this site who use it decide if it goes or not???

If we didn't want the style section we'd just not use it.
However, we almost all of us use it. Thanks for nothing=[

No thanks for not listening to the users of polyvore. The ones who keep it alive and help promote shops around the globe and make a great fashion advertisement, also gets people to develop their style and better sets in the process.

Keep the style advice section please and listen to us members.

Anonymous said...

This was a huge mistake. I got a Polyvore primarily because of this section! I'm under 18 and so I can't win any contests, so I feel good when I answer questions in the style advice section! WHY???

Anonymous said...

WHY??? you are losing sooooo many members. This was a part of polyvore tht you could get help and advice plus find people to follow. It was a great help if you take it down i will be quitting, and so will alot of people. Sure sets are alot of fun to do but they get boring. I have been on polyvore for 3-4 months and i have answered around 400 questions please don't take that away from me, please :(!!

Anonymous said...

I also think this was a huge mistake - the Style advice section is a huge + important part of Polyvore!! I thought it was functioning fine on it's own, so why shut it down? Yes, please give us a better explanation, or I'll be joining the many commenters leaving Polyvore :'(

Anonymous said...

NOOOOO :(
like someone said earlier: "Not sure I'll continue using the site now if ask shuts down. it seems like it really takes away from the concept of the site...."

everyone has said it all. its a dumb decision. Yahoo Answers? Seriously? What could be more useful then actually SEEING what people are suggesting? Definitely the reason I came to polyvore, and now definitely the reason I'm leaving :/

ArtisticBiscuit said...

This is not on at all.

Thank you for slowly making members leave this site. Why, because you do not listen to us.

Try asking us if we want a large chunk of the site chopped. huh
Or if we like a thing that occurs on the site before you get rid.

We have feelings you know...ones you are going to crush.

It's stupid. Please keep the style advice section for the good of polyvore community...yes community which wont feel like that anymore.

Anonymous said...

This will cut back on users of polyvore for sure.

DO NOT DO THIS TO US

crimsonteardrop said...

Dumb polyvore changes.

Ask the users if they want it gone before destroying the site.

Also we love that section.

It helps me become more fashionable.Helps me dress for events...helps find a perfect item.

YouLookFab.com

Seriously wtf Polyvore,I loved the Ask section, giving and getting advices.-__________-

Anonymous said...

To be honest, I never found this section very useful, people rarely read my original post when I asked for style advice and if I put something like "I don't wear high heels" people didn't listen. If I had a harder question people rarely answered at all. Unless your question was "featured" often you got like 1 reply.

Plus "similar questions" didn't work very well and there were no tags or anything so you'd get the same 4 questions asked 200 times.

Kera said...

I've loved this site for the ask section, that's the only part i use and i've been on it religiously every day to see fellow polyvorians opinions! I loved the ask section, its a shame i'll have to find a new website completely to do that. Please reconsider this decision!

Anonymous said...

Really? I guess I won't be visiting this site anymore...that was the best part of your whole system. It's been a good run Polyvore, wish you would keep it.

Anonymous said...

What is wrong with you Polyvore,If you had to make a change, why not extend the days of the questions.
OR monitor stupid questions unrelated to fashion and beauty

Damn you :@@@

sugarsmoma said...

Why!!!! Style advice is one of the best features! I love getting advice and giving it. So sad! Not a good decision. I anticipate many will leave b/c of it. :(

Anonymous said...

To claim that you aren't giving Polyvore users enough recognition is a poor excuse. The Ask section is my biggest reason for visiting this site. And to refer users to Yahoo Answers, where a lot of trolling is done? You're making a huge mistake, Polyvore Team.

Anonymous said...

I used to come on this site everyday, but less and less people come on this site due to the horrible changes you make. I love the ask section because it's filled with people who know what they're talking about. I have a such hopeless sense of fashion. Why would we go to somewhere like Yahoo where it's filled with many people who don't know what they're talking about? Silly.
This site used to have a wonderful flourishing community. Polyvore can't you see that soon there will not be anyone left on this site if you keep making these silly decisions.
Do you know how you can make "Polyvore the best web and mobile experience" possible? By keeping the things we love! That's how you keep people interested, is by improving the things they love!

Anonymous said...

Polyvore, you have made a big mistake. As many others have said, the style advice was the best part! I don't have much time to visit your site, and when I do, it's to ask or answer questions. You will lose A LOT of members by doing this. Shame on you for hurting yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Aw, this is very disappointing. Though I love making sets and looking at other fashion lover's inspiration, the Style Advice/Ask Section was definitely a big and not to mention, helpful addition to the site. I enjoyed giving other people advice when they need it and vice versa for me. It was a way to express fashion to others and offer an opinion when they need it. It's a shame that the one thing people loved the most is being closed down. I'm not sure it was best decision for Polyvore but oh well.

Anonymous said...

Um.. Just because Polyvore is closing the ask/advice section doesn't mean you have to leave. Saying that's the only reason.. The main reason for Polyvore is to make SETS AND NOT ADVICE! Get over it!

phil1v21 said...

Great, now we can leave the style advice to Polyvore...which completely sucks and doesn't cater to the various different INDIVIDUALS who ask in the first place. No opinion from the people, just the Polyvore robots trying to turn us into how they think is what's 'in'. With the Advice Section, everyone had a voice and lots of people were helped. The questions were also way too specific for Polyvore to even answer...you need real human beings with different points of views to reply to such sensitive questions, not people or the mass media who all view 'style' in the same way.

Anonymous said...

No! You're closing down the style section because of "recognition?" No one really cares about that! All we care about is helping people with their style problems! It's really fun to go through the questions and get inspiration for new styles! Creativity on Polyvore will severely decrease if you remove this feature. Please, PLEASE don't shut it down! It's my favorite part of Polyvore!

I gotta agree with everyone else so far. The advice section is the best part. The community seems more personal for me and the set-up is amazing. This is the main reason that I come onto Polyvore, the set making is fun, but the advice is fun, interactive, informative, and personal. If you have a good reason for taking down the Advice section, please tell us and don't say that we are the reason, because we love this part. If you have a good reason, I'll be fine with that, though I can't say if I (or many others) will come back to this site. Oh, and Yahoo is a general advice site, not fashion/beauty specific, so it's a lot harder to find useful stuff.

Where is this "no recognition" coming from? The ONLY reason I joined Polyvore was for the ask a question section! Everything else was fun but secondary to that. It was the reason that Polyvore became the website it is today and a website I frequently use. I spent the bulk of my time on Polyvore on this section and I am sure that I won't be using Polyvore as frequently as I used to.

Anonymous said...

I guess I won't be visiting polyvore anymore...

"This has been an incredibly difficult decision. We reached it after realizing that we haven't been able to give that section of the site and its participants the attention or recognition they deserve."

I'm disappointed. Instead of making an effort to 'give attention to' and 'recognise' the Style Advice section, you decide to just remove it. Ridiculous. Polyvore will be losing an important demographic by closing this feature - not a good move. I really hope the Polyvore team read all of these comments and reconsider their decision.

Anonymous said...

Like everyone else I started using this site for the sets but soon stopped, and now only ask questions and give advice. You will likely loose me and many others as users on your site. Just because you can give this section you time does not mean you should shut it down. You simply don't need to change it.

That's not a great idea, in my opinion. The Advice section is used for multiple purposes: how a lot of people get noticed, make friends, and of course - get advice. How are the fashionably challenged Polyvore members going to get the help they need? I'm not pleased with this at all... You say you want to work on what we need, but deleting a valuable section is taking a step backwards. And while I'm on the "what we need" point: We need a lot of things that you are just ignoring. What about lifting the 50 item per set limit? While the fashion community is growing, so is the art community and some sets take more than 50 items to complete. What about working on getting rid of the maximum groups per set? We can only submit our sets to 5 groups, and then rotate them every month so we get more exposure. I just think the limit is ridiculous. And just to put this out there - I'd really like to see changes done to our personal home page, giving us the option to post announcements on our OWN page, much like moderators can in their groups. How about increasing the set size? Or allowing us to see a larger version (much like many Fashion stores when you hover over the image). What about an option to nominate a talented member to become a "featured member"? There are so many other things you should be focusing on that could benefit the site, not taking things away that are valuable and ignoring what users have been requesting.

And to go back to the issue at hand. How can someone get or even give style advice or tips on an account that isn't as popular as others? Someone who joined yesterday won't be able to get the advice they need via their sets as opposed to someone who has been on this site for three years and has 9,000 followers.

I don't know anything about the contests.. so I can't comment on that. Anyone care to enlighten me on that? When did they say we can't enter contests with prizes?

Wow, that's the most useful part of your website. There's really no point to visiting the site at this point...now you're essentially going to be a fashion-only pinterest with a poor product search. LAME.

Ive looked at Polyvore from time to time over the years. Never more than to just to give a quick glance. It wasnt until needing help with some blue suede booties that I discovered the ask section. Thats when I just joined. And you are removing it? Sounds like a bad idea. And for my part would be taking away the one & only reason to be part of this community. I hope you would reconsider your decision.

whatthefuck. I wish you guys wouldn't close down this section. I would not know what to wear without it. So if ever you an idiot that's wearing orange and purple plaid with american flag shorts and one thigh high boot and one combat boot just know it's because I didn't have the ASK section to help me figure out what to wear. This just another one of your stupid, no good, use less modifications that no one likes.

Anonymous said...

Awww! So sad :( This section of the website was so helpful, it won't be the same here without it.

Anonymous said...

The ask section is the best part of the site, a great feeder to other sections of the site, and it is the only reason why I come to polyvore. It is the only reason I end up browsing sets and saving items. Without the ask section you have lost me as a user. Well, I guess that's the price you pay for bad decisions and bad business strategy. The good thing is, all your competitors will benefit from this and gain more traffic.

I really liked the style section, need it to make outfits cause not all of us want to make sets or cant think of outfits. Thanks but not really

Anonymous said...

That seems vain and narcissistic. You want everybody to focus their style on themselves, yet that's not helping those who are confused with their personal style, or need a quick tip. I was excited to give my opinions. Not base a whole profile just on outfits I can mash together. How boring.

I love PV and although I don't use the Ask section as much as I make sets, I do visit it and it is an awesome tool. Because it is so user driven, your reason for closing it seems ... well ... incredible. Is your bandwidth limited and needed for the more popular sets section? Did your html developer quit? Are you trying to spread the PV love by drawing more attention to it via the other websites you mention? Just be honest with us and you'll have more respect and credibility with your users...
I'll still be a loyal PV member and do appreciate most of your updates (love searching items by color, adding from collections) - hope to see more meaningful ones in the future (add back ability to edit just set info and not entire set, add doll category, etc.)
Thanks - @riley5

This was incredibly unnecessary and unhelpful. First, you remove the feature that allows users to remove and organize multiple items at once; and now, you take away an important part of the website. Honestly, the majority of the changes have been counterproductive and it will show on the website's traffic. You will continue (I'm sure you've lost countless users already) members by making these stupid changes. What makes this worse is that you failed to provide an adequate explanation. You must reconsider. Even though you think that section of the website is not receiving attention from the Polyvore staff, the actual users (a.k.a. those who allow the Polyvore website to develop even further) do enjoy and utilize that feature a lot. There are many, many users who visit the website due merely to that feature and do not make any sets. I think you will regret making such a foolish decision.

Marialena said...

please dont do this! it's the best part of polyvore, it's free, fun and interactive, it made me successful! you wouldnt believe my happiness when i saw i was top style guru of the week and ever since then i was constantly in the top 3. It made me feel alive, needed and useful. Don't do it, you'll regret it dearly after all the polyvore users turn against you..

Anonymous said...

This seems like a very unfortunate decision. As far as I am aware, everyone is more than happy with the current functioning and recognition-levels of ask/ style advice, yet it is being taken away from us, for our benefit. That seems like a highly illogical step that benefits who? No one, as far as I can see.

Anonymous said...

This seems like a very unfortunate decision. I'm afraid that polyvore will a lot of users by doing this, and won't enhnace the quality of the sets made. To be honest, this seems like polyvore taking away something that people love, just because they can. I really hope you rethink this decision!

Anonymous said...

Please don't delete it! It is the reason I love and USE polyvore. Please, please reconsider!

smiletorismile said...

Please don't disable this feature! This is the reason I joined Polyvore and it is honestly my favorite part! I think you guys do give recognition for the ask section! The top guru of the week and all time is a great way and really its all you need, advice shouldn't need recognition as long as the person giving advice is giving the best advice they can. Please don't get rid of the ask section! It is truely a great section of the site and it is definatly the best fashion based ask site around.

Katie said...

I know polyvore doesn't belong to its users, but the reason I have always loved polyvore so much is its somewhere where my voice is heard. I can get inspiration and ideas from others, and most importantly help others. I know that answering a simple question about what to wear on summer holiay, or how to pull-off a daring fashion trend isn't exactly saving the world, but, you know what? It made me feel good knowing that I had helped someone, or made a decison easier. Take the style advice section away, and what are you left with? Yet another limited fashion website that doesn't care what its user think.

The ask section is why I joined--love giving and receiving answers. Sad to say, if you continue with this decision, I'll be one of the many that stop using Polyvore.

Alex said...

I don't understand why you even need to get rid of it, it was one of my favourite things about Polyvore and it came in handy during last minute situations, it was also fun to help out others! "You can't give us enough recognition" the recognition is that people see our answers and we're basically advertising our style to the world? I'm sorry but getting rid of this is a big, big mistake Polyvore, very big mistake.

Danielle said...

The Ask section was probably my favourite part of Polyvore, so I'm really disappointed that you are shutting it down :(. The forum is a great place to ask for style advice and to interact with other members. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be using Polyvore as often now

Anonymous said...

I'm really upset with this. Whenever I found pretty clothes at the shops I would never found out how to style them, so I would ask people on Polyvore and it would really help me so I wouldn't look awkward wearing my clothes. I love giving style advice, everyone on Polyvore loves it so why are you getting rid of it? I wouldn't be surprised if you lose a lot of members. I'm sorry, but that is very upsetting and disappointing. Not impressed.

Anonymous said...

I wont be using this website again! without the ask, there is no polyvore!

hii-live said...

I really don't know enough about operating a site like this one, but dropping the style advice section is a huge loss for a lot of members! I've been an active member for several years, and the ask section is by far my favourite feature on Polyvore, and the one I use the most. Your design is the absolutely best for asking and answering style questions on the web (I used Chictopia's ask-section a lot earlier, then made answers in Polyvore)

Please, please, please don't shut down the ask section - we're so happy with it! And sadly, I have to agree with many other members here, I'll probably stop using Polyvore when the section goes.

nirvana88audrey said...

I'm not sure Polyvore realizes how many people Google "how to style..." and they come across this site through that. People are constantly looking for inspiration and an outside eye and this site is one of the few places where we get that without judgement or hate. I hope you are removing it to make improvements but I doubt that will happen. To those saying the people who are angry about the people saying they may leave the site, I don't think people understand that a huge, huge part of fashion is the community around it, not just the discovery of clothes. S Without the ask, It will be much harder to build a sense of community here. Some people are just beginning their journey into style, and looking at sets may not give them the inspiration they're really looking for (ie these particular shoes, this particular style, does this particular outfit work?)
I truly hope Polyvore realizes this mistake before they lose most of their new and old loyal fans.

Hanar said...

What a ridiculous idea. That is what made polyvore unique, now its just creating sets for no real reason other than to inspire ourselves.

How can anyone get recognition for what they did if you're going to close that part which users took a lot of effort and time over to help other users!

It's a mistake.

Hanar said...

I also found the function to not only help the users that were in need of advice.. but also me.

I was able to appreciate and expand my view on fashion by trying to suit it to the OP's style.

It doesn't just benefit the user who asked but the user who answers as they learn to appreciate and learn how to coordinate clothes through helping many people.

What!? I joined Polyvore for the Style Advice/Ask Section!? Why are you doing this!? Now I probably won't be visiting it again!

Anonymous said...

That's how I found Polyvore because I was looking for a site where you could ask for and give advice. I cannot believe that you give us the true reasons because the make no sense. Cannot imagine that the ask session needs so much input from your side...only if you just fired some off you stuff completely this could explain this statement... A pitty yes! Maybe you could let us know a bit more about your vision how polyvore should look like in the future?

Anonymous said...

What why?! That was the best part of Polyvore!?

I only joined for style advice since i struggle with fashion and its the only place i was able to get actual help and real answers not just b.s like yahoo question and all my 100 dsets ideas created overtime came from my questuions ive asked. it doesnt make any since isnt this site for fashion and community well that helped me open up to ppl nd get to find ppl with similar taste since most set on poly are wayy to high end expensive at least i could ask direct questions for help on my lower budget nd plus sized figure. well to those over polyvore i suggest a better sit and app called tri closet mirror u can ask nonstop questions n add clothes in pictures from ur closet. i will b deleting the polyvore appp n my account n have no reason to go on a fashion site if i cant get fashion help.

I guess polyvore won't be on my favourites tab anymore. Not sure why this is happening- maybe they want us to focus more on the acutal shopping?

Anonymous said...

I LOVE the Ask section on Polyvore! Why would you take it away if it's one of the main reasons people use Polyvore? "Ask" helps me decide what to wear with clothes, it gives GREAT fashion advice, AND we, as Polyvore users, can feel as if we've helped somebody when we give our opinion on what to wear. I'm just confused on why you would shut something down that everyone loves??

Anonymous said...

Well, i'm just another person commenting that polyvore will not take notice of, but I still want to make my point. Good move, polyvore, for eliminating the part of your website that brings in the most attention. You are going to lose a lot of users, myself included. I love to make sets as well, but the biggest (and my favourite) part of polyvore for me was interacting with others, helping others and being inspired by others. You are eliminating the community aspect of your website. I hope you realise this is a mistake when reading these comments/ultimately when you do shut it down. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole of polyvore shuts down soon after due to poor attention.

It would be great if polyvore responded with a further explanation as to why they are closing the advice section down, because frankly their current explanation doesn't cut it.

Anonymous said...

"No thanks for not listening to the users of polyvore. The ones who keep it alive and help promote shops around the globe and make a great fashion advertisement, also gets people to develop their style and better sets in the process."

"It would be great if polyvore responded with a further explanation as to why they are closing the advice section down, because frankly their current explanation doesn't cut it."

^^^ I agree with these two people! Listen to your users polyvore!

Anonymous said...

Wow, bit of a dickmove there polyvore....

Anonymous said...

This makes no sense. Almost all the people I follow and who follow me did so because we liked answers given in the question section. When I threw a question out there, the people who gave the best answers were the ones most likely to be people whose sets I would continue to enjoy and find inspiration from.

It also created a certain sense of community, which is what many of us are looking for on the sites we frequent the most.

Anonymous said...

guess its time to start looking for a new polyvore.....

yeah making sets is fun, but sometimes you dont feel inspired enough by anything and just want to help someone put together a nice outfit-- or help them throw a last minute costume together.

lame changes in my opinion.

Hello Polyvore Team,
I am really am surprised in this decision. I think the ask section is a valuable and interesting feature to the site. I understand many polyvore members and outsiders see the ask page very helpful. I am hoping that after such a strong response that this will only be a temporary change. I would love to see the page updated and become more helpful and streamline.
Love always,

p.s. I understand everyone is extremely passionate about this site. I just would love to see more respectable and constructive response from it's members when these changes occur.

Wow, I can't believe Polyvore would such a thing! The Ask Section was the only reason why I joined in the first place. I met a lot of gurus and followed them because they helped me in that section. I also go there for ideas on a daily basis. If this decision follows through, I would no longer come on the site. Oh well. Why do all good things come to end? Ughhh..

Ignorant Awareness said...

It's a shame, because that was the only part of the site where I felt popularity didn't matter as much a ORIGINALITY did!

A lot of the rest of Polyvore just seems contrived to me- most of the 'top sets' follow the same 'popular' look, & there's WAY too much emphasis on unaffordable high-end designer clothing! I mean, at least in the 'ask' section you could get more WEARABLE suggestions (that the average person can relate to)!

There are SO many fashion blogs & websites out there ALREADY catering to an expensive fantasy fashion world- you were filling a MUCH-NEEDED niche with accessible advice, so why would you close it down?!

(PS- I don't buy the explanation of us not getting enough recognition for it- surely people do it because they want to help one another?! I've regularly been featured as one of the top style gurus, & I'm just glad to know my answers help people- even if people don't vote an answer up, that doesn't mean they haven't got any inspiration out of it! I have a feeling profit might be coming into play here- many people ask for cheap options in the 'ask' section, so maybe that could be why you feel like this is diverting people's attention away from the more impossibly expensive items that you regularly feature instead!)

Sorry for the rant, but I've been using the 'ask' section for years- I don't have the time to keep a blog going, so this way at least I could help others without a blog. You'll be losing a pretty active Polyvore member if you let this happen :(

Anonymous said...

Really!?! I don't hope you're fucking serious? That part is my favorite part of Polyvore. You say you love it. Then why close it!? It doesn't make any sense! I think you will loose many visitors! It's SO sad!

Great decision people. Now I can't do absolutely anything with this site that I used to LOVE, that sucks. I have a tablet so I can't make sets because you created the app just for I-phones and now I can't even answer questions! As someone already said you give an absolutely silly explenation for your decision. We don't need YOUR support in the answers, the members are completely able to give good advices! Don't want to be rude but use your time to make apps for tabs and android not to cancel good things. You yust ruined everything. I'm so pissed right now, you are ruining my favourite site.

Anonymous said...

I really like Polyvore and the way it lets us express our sense of fashion creatively, but allow me to add my voice when I say shutting down the ask/advice section is a BIG MISTAKE. Pardon me, but the reasons you give for doing so are vague and not very valid in my opinion. I don't care if I get recognition for the advice I give. Having this resource on your site has helped me to navigate tricky trends and style pieces of clothing I previously found difficult to wear. Telling us you are giving us more by providing less is not a very good management plan. I am very disappointed.

Style advise is literally the ONLY reason I visit this site. I might then look through sets from people who answer but now I can't ask for help I'm not going to use my account at all. This was my favorite site for getting advice and removing this feature to focus on other aspects seems counter-productive. I see no good reason for this.

This is not fair. Even if the Polyvore team does not give it attention the users do and we were happy with it the way it was/is! It was a fun part of Polyvore and I strongly advise you to keep it running and open or your website WILL decrease in users. This is not a smart move!

Hello guys! Im 14, I'm a dedicated member of Polyvore and honeslty I love this site it helps and inspires me so much! This has caused a problem for me as I feel saf on this site, people are not nasty or spiteful when awnsering my questions no matter how simple they may seem. People on this site help me when I am unsure and I have made so many friends. I would like to say that I also gave people advice. Being my age my mother wont let me open a Yahoo account as some awnsers are mean and sarcastic. I love this website and feel tht by taking this away is will only be a disadvantage. I dont understand why this is being taken from us? I also dont know where else to go to ask advise. So thank you for letting me do that in the past but I am upset by this information.

I am so sad to hear this news. This was my primary reason for visiting Polyvore. The sets are nice, but it was always great to get advice from others. This was a key differentiator on Polyvore and really made Polyvore stand apart from other fashion sites. There is really something amazing about asking how to work with clothes you already own. Although as a 42 year old, I am probably not your target audience.

Best of luck with the new changes.

Just a suggestion to those protesting (mostly in an impolite manner, I may add): Could you not ask for style advice in your sets and accomplish the same goal? Make some friends on the site; your followers will respond to your questions if they have something to share, and they will ask YOU for tips when they see your show-stopping style in the sets you create! Please don't leave; just get creative as to how you can still use the site for your enjoyment.

The ask section is the best part of this site and the only reason why so many people use it. Whoever made this decision single handedly destroyed the best style advice collaboration I(and many others) have ever seen on the internet. Deleting my account asap, and deffinately not reccomending the site, just out of spite. (; Immature? Sure, but so was your decision to take it away because you just didnt want to give it more attention. Thanks a ton for caring about the community. Sarcasm heavily intended. <3

The Ask section made Polyvore of a community. I will miss that. I know I won't be coming back to Polyvore anymore, except maybe to see if the Ask section is somehow restored. :/

wow polyvore I personally won't be leaving because I didn't use it much but the majority of people on this site did. What are you trying to do? Get a new crowd to come to your site? Because this is DEFINITELY not how to do it. Or do you just enjoy making the users mad?

Well polyvore it looks like you've just lost a large amount of users again by making silly changes and not actually giving reasons why you did. GOOD JOB. NOT.

Anonymous said...

Will we still be able to see questions we've asked and saved and advice we've given? I'm very digusted by Polyvore's decision, and I will no longer have a reason to be a member of this site anymore. Sets do not inspire me. They are only of one (or, occasionally, more than one) outfit that somebody else made in their own style. The Style Advice allow users to tailor the advice to fit the person who asked it, but the answerers could use their personal style to help them answer the question. I'm saddened :(
