Closing the Style Advice/Ask Section

UPDATE 2/1/2012: Style Advice has been closed. You can see the archives here. Thank you for contributing to our Ask section.

UPDATE 1/15/2012: We want you to know that we are listening and reading all of your comments. We care about you, the community, very much and that's why closing the Style Advice section was a hard decision for us, too. Ultimately, we decided this was the best for the whole Polyvore community. Please try to keep the Style Advice experience positive for everyone while the section is still open. Thanks again for your contribution and support.

Dear Polyvore Community,

We love that you are style gurus who generously share your tips on how to look great. You show us in your sets how to style awesome outfits, and you've showed us in the Style Advice, or Ask section.

Now it's time for us to ask you to concentrate all your amazing styling powers in your sets, comments and collections because sadly, we will be closing down the Style Advice/Ask section in January.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision. We reached it after realizing that we haven't been able to give that section of the site and its participants the attention or recognition they deserve. We've decided to spend our time really focusing on improving features that make a difference and that make Polyvore the best web and mobile experience it can be for you.

Any sets you have created for Style Advice answers will still appear on your profile, and any saved items will still appear in My Items. Your badges will also remain on your profile. However Style Advice/Ask will be phased out over the coming weeks.

  • After January 17, we will stop accepting new questions.
  • After January 31, the Style Advice/Ask section will no longer be available on the site.

We'd love to see your questions and expertise reach a larger audience on dedicated sites like Yahoo Answers or Quora. (If you know of another great style advice site, please let us and your fellow Polyvore members know!)

Thank you for all your generosity and creativity in providing great style advice in the Ask section over the last three years. You continue to inspire us and we’re looking forward to more of your styling tips through your sets, comments and collections!

Love,
The Polyvore Team

.....that makes literally no sense? possibly negative sense. polyvore please explain how this was a good idea?? you don't recognise our sets either, and i've never noticed a change except that time you changed our usernames?? i don't understand how taking it away will help??

Anonymous said...

Yet you're keeping the "shop" section?! Does anybody use that? Because I'm pretty sure if you had to take something away it should have been something that wasn't the main reason most people joined.

nobody needs your recognition, seriously, don't worry your little heads about it. the answers are the recognition. wow polyvore, way to suck.

Anonymous said...

really? this is like the best section on your site and you plan on taking it away? good luck. there are so many people that are leaving YOUR site because of YOUR stupid decision. just leave it alone and keep it. you're gonna lose so many people. thanks polyvore for NOTHING.

I LOVED polyvore with the style advice/ask section! This is a disgrace and I am sad to say that I will probably not be visitng polyvore any time soon. That was the best part about polyore and all I ever did on there! I hope you take these comments into consideration before you make the biggest mistake and lose thousands of members.

The Ask/Advice section is one of my favorites!!!!!! It is sooooo helpful!! Honestly, this was not a good decision. :(

Anonymous said...

I am literally heart broken that you have made this decision. This is the main reason I joined Polyvore, and continue to use it after almost 4 years. I will miss it desperately!

This insanity. The ask portion of this website cycles through thousands of questions a day and it helps a lot of people. I'm really upset and i hope that they realize they wont have HALF of the users they have now. Hopefully they soon realize this and give US OUR SITE BACK! unfortunately a lot of there reasons to change and update this site have become random and unexplained. THERE IS NO GOOD REASON THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE THIS PART OF THE SITE DOWN. As a user for 2 years i am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. In conclusion i have a quick question, HOW DO YOU CORPORATE PEOPLE THINK THIS WILL HELP?! why cut this off? no words can describe how i feel about this.

We should boycot! WE WANT ASK SECTION! WE WANT ASK SECTION!!!!!!!!!!

Polyvore is getting more and more commercial and selfish. And hypocritical..that is the most deceiving thing. So sad:(

Well, it is your desision, but I'm not ashamesd to say that I don't agree with it. The advice section, even though I don't use it, was the thin line that kept Polyvore ahead of all the other fashion sites. If you could back up your reasoning for this a little more, it might actually make sense. The advice section was avery useful tool, and I may not ever come back with it being gone. You are downgrading your site, Polyvore. Take something else away, but not this.

Anonymous said...

So much for me using Polyvore. This section was the ONLY reason I used the website. :(

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much Polyvore, for ruining the site even more than you have already. We're closing it down because we can't focus on and appreciate the people who comment? That's a load of bullcrap.

Anonymous said...

Downgrade, downgrade, downgrade. Do you realize, Polyvore, that most of your viewers use the Ask and Advice section? Taking it away is just subtracting your site users. You don't have a good enough reason to take this away, in my opinion. Take away the shop section, almost nobody uses that. I DO NOT mean to sound rude, but really, you shouldn't take this away. :(

Anonymous said...

Is it going to come back?!?!?!?! The style advice is my favorite part of polyvore!

Honestly i understand that you have ALOT of angry people on your hands and trutfuly i am one of them. The "ASK" section of the site is what i go on the site for. Its a fun way to communicate with other users and allows it to be an overall more social site. I think that closing down the "ASK" section will definetily decrease the sites popularity. You say its closing becuase you all arent paying enough attention to it but if thats your opinion change it and pay more attention to it. I hope that you take our ideas into consideration. Thankyou for listening andplease do not delete the "ASK section
Sincerely,Beaky526

*Sigh* This is very sad. This was one of my favorite parts of polyvore. It was where you could get genuine answers from people, and find new people to follow. I don't understand why you would shut this down? I was hoping to find a valid reason on the blog but it seems i didn't... hopefully something amazing will be replacing it. that's the only reason i could think of for shutting down something that so many people used.

oh well.

an unhappy Polyvore user said...

I actually think Polyvore's BEST feature is the style advice!! I will most likely no longer use polyvore. " THANK YOU POLYVORE FOR GIVING US THE BEST CREDIT BY SHUTTING US DOWN!!"

Anonymous said...

I am sad to see this go. I love to help others with style advice and this part of polyvore is actually USEFUL. Not only is it useful, but polyvore is the only website I know of that offers such a great idea. People sometimes NEED help and getting rid of this is so upsetting. It's like you polyvore staff aren't even taking into consideration the public's needs and wants and instead trying to "focus on other areas of the website". I mean come on. That's a blunt lie starring you right in the face. This pisses me off.

Anonymous said...

The only reason I used polyvore was for the ask section. It was so useful. I guess I won't be on anymore.

Anonymous said...

This part of the site is why I joined Polyvore and is definitely the best part. Sorry to say I won't continue to use the site after January 17th. :(

divinebutterfly said...

I do not agree with this!

Anonymous said...

DO NOT CLOSE IT!!!! That was the best part of Polyvore!!! It helped me sooooo much!!!! Do you see how many people are upset?!!! Do you care?!!!

Anonymous said...

Please take into consideration all these comments. I've skimmed through pages of them and I've only found about four people saying they don't care. That proves that pretty much everybody DOES care about the Ask section.
The 'Ask' section makes Polyvore more than a fashion/art website- it makes it feel like a community. It's a much more fun way to interact with your friends, asking them style questions, than with comments.
You didn't give a direct reason in this article, either, why you're closing it. Because there's not enough questions asked? So why can't you advertise it or improve it in some way to make it attract more users? Besides, I see a new question there just about every 45 seconds when I reload the page- I don't know, but to me, that seems like a pretty good amount of people.
On days when I just have five or ten minutes to get on the Internet for fun, I go to Polyvore Ask section. Sets are super fun, but the ask section is a faster and easier way to enjoy Polyvore, and great for those days when you need to be inspired by fashion, not make an artsy set.
Thank you for reading and please rethink.
Sincerely, Cece

Polyvore should AT LEAST keep archives of all of the past questions so if a girl who isn't sure how to wear something, she can search through the trends and find it! I sadly doubt that will happen though. :/

Greta said...

Can you please not close this? It is the only reason I use polyvore.

Anonymous said...

So polyvore cares about us and thats why they are closing the ask section. Huh, if thats how a site cares about me I think I'd rather not be on the site at all.

Anonymous said...

This is the whole reason I joined Polyvore :(

I wont use Polyvore after this.

THIS WAS A HUGE MISTAKE ON POLYVORE'S PART. POLYVORE, YOU WILL LOOSE A LOT OF MEMBERS BECAUSE OF THIS.

Anonymous said...

The "Ask section" is why I like polyvore so much.
1. I think it's a great way for polyvorers to get noticed- answering questions leads to people discovering new polyvorers with styles they like.
2. It lets polyvorers feel involved. It's a huge part in creating the site's community feeling.
3. It promotes the purchase of items. People are probably more likely to buy an item after seeing it styled.
4. It's just as much an aspect of polyvore as creating sets.

I hope after reading all of these positive comments about the "Ask section" you reconsider closing it.

Anonymous said...

That really stinks. I love using Polyvore Advice/Help section. I really liked it. :(

laurathebookworm said...

Huh. Reading other comments, it seems like lots of people really used the ask section. I used it a few times. It was very helpful, though.

I just hope you, fellow Polyvore people, figure this out.

Also, I don't think this is a good enough reason to quit Polyvore entirely. It is a really cool site with awesome features other than the ask section.

And, guys? I'm sure Polyvore has a valid reason why the ask section was closed. Hey. Maybe it'll even be brought back!

Polyvore people? If you read this, I want you to know I'm not on either side; I LOVE Polyvore; I introduced all my friends to it. But it would probably be a good idea to at least proivide us, who keep your site going I might add (If we didn't go on, it would be useless.), with a good explanation. I know when I was defending you earlier I said I thought you had one. Well, now I'd like to see it.

In conclusion, I hope you all figure this out.

Hugs and kisses!

Seriously? SERIOUSLY??!! You want to close down the most loved, most used section of the site, and lie to our faces, saying that you're "sad to see this part of Polyvore go" blah blah blah. If you really WERE said to see this part of Polyvore go, you would close down a part of the site that no-one uses, like the shop part. Seriously! Who uses the part? But, you want to make the site better by closing down the most loved part?? Wake up and get your head out of your ass, because it's not a hat.

If you close down this part of the site, By January 31, you will have lost MANY members, and I'll be one of them. Stop this nonsense and DON'T CLOSE THIS DOWN!!!!

Anonymous said...

hmmm.. well its not like i would get angry at the polyvore team because they shut this down, but i will say that i am a bit bummed. i really enjoyed helping others and the style advice section was really useful for me and many other people. i really enjoy helping people and if any polyvore users need some style advice, please comment on my sets with a question or tag me in a set with your question and some pictures and i will try my best to help.

Anonymous said...

Polyvore team, I know you have a new CRO and new "monetization" plans for 2013, but you are going to lose a lot of users, not just the people who are bothering to comment here, but 2013 will NOT be a good year for you if you plaster more Ads all over the site AND shut down the "Ask" section: I know you are thinking of making more money through the "Shop" section and having people share sets, but then what makes Polyvore so unique? The ask section created a community, and it's NOT the same as going to Yahoo Answers or some other crap. This is a fashion website that had more of a community. Now that you're ditching it, you might get more unique vistors initially, but your main loyal users will get tired of *just* the "shop" section, and in the end this will prove to be a very bad decision on Polyvore's part.

But you go ahead and monetize it up and dedicate your time to the mobile app. You'll be just another website, just another app.

I've had my account for 4 years and I'm done. I'm posting all over facebook, pinterest, twitter, and blog, telling everyone to NEVER use Polyvore.

ariela1014 said...

Well to be truthful I never used the ask section. But the way I see you people reacting I can tell you really loved it. Polyvore this site is for your Polyvorians so why not do what makes us happy? Just saying. :/

Anonymous said...

Polyvore has gotten worse ever since the HUGE update a year or so ago & ever since then; the site has completely died. It sucks that it seems as if you're not making any good changes to bring in more people or get this site back up to how it used to be. Remember when you promised customization for profiles/backgrounds for our profiles? Whatever happened to that?

Alexiss said...

I do not understand how to make choices on the set of each user, I still do not understand what role polyvor who make a place for those who use polyvore tools, how to start or where to performance mode in costume design tasks, and interior design, I studied, then both, and I can not understand, what kind of criteria used for the same set. Sorry if I bothered someone. I have read the terms and conditions of Polyvore.

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much Polyvore for making the Ask section. It was really fun for us at the time, but I do agree that we probably did need the recgonition. I wish ya'll wouldn't close it down though, and maybe if ya'll could make it better and not close it down, then we would ALL be happier. :)

Anonymous said...

Thats just sad. and disgusting. we really love this part of polyvore and instead of closing it down we should have a vote on our opinion because we are the people using the website/app and I know that people will stop using polyvore after this happens. that is just a really sad thing to do. GRRRRRRRR you always improve things according to what the staff want what about us! we are the people that make your website famous and this is just stupid! Why dont you remove other useless things like the shop because we can shop online somewhere else and I know that you are not going to listen to the peoples crys but realy thats just stupid. the worst thing that polyvore has ever done.

and that is my opinion.

Anonymous said...

I am sorry, but every change and feature you have installed in the past three years has caused this website to lose it's sense of community.
It has become overly commercialized and barren, I rarely see sets with 100+ comments like I use to.
I understand that you want to make money, but there has to be checks and balances.

Anonymous said...

Sadly with this change I doubt I will coontnue to use the site.Hope you all reconsider this decesion.

Anonymous said...

So you're closing it down mainly because you don't want to deal with it anymore? It was the best for the polyvore community? Really. When we all use it. totally makes sense. I just really hope you guys enjoy losing your users. If you really cared about your users you wouldn't to this. But obviously you don't give a crap. I hope you have a great day.

Can you please give us the real, legitimate reason why you think this is the best decision for the polyvore community as a whole?

It's unbelievable to me that you are "reading our comments" and yet still refuse to answer our questions about why the section is getting closed down. Once again, a vague and unsatisfying answer that will appease absolutely no one.

Also LOLing forever at "Thanks again for your contribution and support." No one is supporting this decision.

This is my favorite part of polyvore, and personally, i will probably stop visiting. unfortunately i strongly disagree with your decision.

Anonymous said...

goodbye polyvore! your going to loose lots of faithful fans

Anonymous said...

Actually, the reason i joined Polyvore was because i was seeking for style advice for a couple of occasions. Polyvore was the only site i found that had such efficient style advice section, where users can interact and exchange opinions, search thru already answered questions etc... I found it very useful, and i still visit that section. If it's less active part of your site, it doesn't mean you have to quit it. Will you eventually forbid interior design, art & expression? andeverything but fashion sets?
You don't really have any reasonable arguments for quitting this section, you shpuld have asked the community BEFORE making such stupendous thing.

Anonymous said...

goodbye polyvore! you better be expecting to loose MANY fans

Anonymous said...

yeah, there is absolutely no reason to ever visit polyvore again. this is what made your site different... big mistake !

Kayla said...

I really hope the Polyvore staff sees our comments of disappointment and reconsiders. This is just not right. I don't see a single comment saying "Yes, good riddance!" Every single one of these comments expressed true disappointment. The staff needs to reconsider because it's not far to us if they don't have time to manage that. They created this site and therefore have to have time for that section.

Anonymous said...

the sad part for me is i just discovered the ask section these couple weeks :(

Bárbara Paula Acosta said...

That section was the main reason I joined the community in the first place. I found asking for style advice to be really helpful and felt useful giving it to others. As everybody, I'm sad to say that I'm probably stop visiting this site afterwards.

Danielle said...

The only reason I visited, and ultimately joined this site was because of the Style Advice section, so I don't have any reason to visit Polyvore after this change. Such a shame, I really liked and appreciated being able to ask and answer style questions! I don't even know any other site that had such a feature. It's a bit of a waste, really.

Anonymous said...

I have an idea, message me on polyvore if you agree. My idea is that Polyvore could instead of taking the ask section away they could add a limit of how many questions you can ask per day, per week, per month. (Whatever they decide.) Also, they could require you to make at least one set per question answered, or they could make you create so many sets before you can even use Ask section. That way everyone wins, and we create sets more often. Please, someone see this.. My polyvore name is xSimplyBeautiful, message me.

THAT NASH GIRL said...

I'm really sad this is my favorite part about polyvore and allows people to create sets for specific reasons/occasions. It's really been a huge help to me. :(

Anonymous said...

This is just WRONG!

The reason I signed up for Polyvore was because I was googling how to wear a certain shirt. It look me RIGHT to the ask section of Polyvore. I instantly fell in love with all the options and advice I'd be giving! I only go to Polyvore to pretty much check out the ask section and have been since November 2010!

This is a wrong move. What about those of us who aren't so good with fashion? The Ask portion of the site saved my life! :( Without it, I have no reason to go to Polyvore anymore.

NOW where do I ask for fashion advice ... on Yahoo! Answers? Ew

Anonymous said...

It's pretty clear you just need to change your mind about this choice unless you want to see a wonderful site end.

Anonymous said...

i joined Polyvore for the stlye advice!!After it closes I'm not going here anymore.

POLYVORE HOW COULD YOU!?!!?!?!?

Rivs said...

i guess we just have to wait and see how many people leave polyvore

Anonymous said...

The Advice/Ask Section was how I found Polyvore in the first place! It's really disappointing that you're closing down my favourite part of the site. I mostly come on to help out other people or ask questions about my own fashion problems, and the fact that you're taking this away will decrease the site's appeal. I don't post many sets, and I know for sure I now won't be visiting Polyvore and using it as often as before. Very poor choice, sorry Polyvore; and as you can see, lots of other users agree with me.

Anonymous said...

whattt? why?
thats the best part pf polyvore, its really cool to interact with other people, and get more points of views about fashion.

Anonymous said...

I really love the ask section and well taking it away is basically like taking christmas away!!!!! I just simply think it is a very pointless move which will benefit no-one and I dont know if polyvore will even survive...a really huge disapointment!!!!

MissInspiration said...

SAAAYYYYY WHHAAAAAT!!!!

THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND AN OUTRAGE!!!

The reason most people use Polyvore is because of the Ask/ Style advise section and the fact that Fashion, sets and Answers are all in one central space. You can't view sets/pictures or peoples ideas on Yahoo, Quroo or whatever other sites you have suggested without them adressing a link. I am deeply dissapointed that you did not get most of your viewers/users to VOTE on what they think is the best for us because ultimately we are the community. I remeber reading in a magazine, I think it was Seventeen South Africa about your guy's ask section and how you could get great advise from people all over the world.

Another thing, why would you want to lower your users spirits by closing the ask/style advise section down?!?!?! Do you know how GOOD it feels to help people in the UNANSWERED section?! OBVIOUSLY NOT! You clearly have no idea how good it feels when your answer is chosen as the best!

I sincerely hope that you REGRET this decision. I know I am one of the many fashionistas around the world that are disappointed in YOU!

[A whole lot of angry fashionista faces go here!]

I honestly don't mind seeing this gone. I don't use it and never did I got on polyvore to express my own style and do cute things for rpg sites.

I don't WANT to hear other peoples advice on style. I am a leader not a follower I don't follow style advice I break necks showing off what I wear.

Pfft glad to have it gone cluttering up my view of my profile. Like what I put together? Comment on it or like it don't try to make me conform to your style, express it.

I am still at a lost for words...this is really a fun and exciting way to give and receive wonderful style advice from many different perspectives all over the world. I truly wish you would reconsider this decision, very disappointed.

SAYYY WHAT?!?!?!

This is the SOLE reason I remain on Polyvore!! I found the website while looking for style advice on how to wear my new clothes that I had got, and fell in love.

I continue to answer people's questions, even if I have none of my own. And it makes me feel like I'm doing some good, and it gives me a happy feeling every time I answer an unanswered question.

PLEASE POLYVORE! I BEG YOU TO RETHINK THIS DECISION!!!! BRING BACK THE ASK SECTION!!!!

If you don't rethink, I'll be deleting my account. Thanks for stuffing up my fashion and social life, Polyvore.

And how DARE you close down this part of the site? You couldn't even ask us to vote. I think if we did vote, you would find that 99.9% of us would disagree to removing the ask section, and a small, VERY SMALL, minority would agree.

PLEASE DON'T DO THIS POLYVORE!!!!

Anonymous said...

"Ultimately, we decided this was the best for the whole Polyvore community. Please try to keep the Style Advice experience positive for everyone while the section is still open. Thanks again for your contribution and support."

No one is supporting you with this decision, and yet again, you still haven't explained WHY you are closing the part of the site down. You can keep saying that it's what's best for the site/your users (which hopefully you can realise that your users aren't happy) but that still isn't a reason nor an explanation. You at least owe us the real reason it's closing down.

draco-is-my-prince said...

Well, this is really sad decision and I think it's not fair...Also,I must say that I love making sets, but when I go to school,I don't have time for that,so at these times I always went to the ask section, cause it doesn't take lot of time and I'm always glad to help. So,it seems to me that I will be coming only during holidays...And that's not much... :(

Anonymous said...

This is the bit that gets me... 'We've decided to spend our time really focusing on improving features that make a difference'. Well, you're going to get a shock when you close a part of the website 'that didn't make a difference' when you see just how much of a difference it makes to the people that use your site. Disappointed and still no real explanation.

Anonymous said...

I'm terribly disappointed in the decision to close the Ask Section. It was what initially drew me to Polyvore, and I have enjoyed it greatly ever since. One of my favorite things about this website is the sense of community and freedom of expression that it has provided. It is essential for that very sense of community, for members to be able to communicate easily. I simply don't understand how Polyvore would benefit, as a website, without this feature. Well, I've added my two cents, and I sincerely hope that you will consider the general opinion before you take such a drastic action. Thanks for your time!

This is.. a very bad decision.. I absolutely LOVE the Ask Section! Polyvore, you disappoint me very much. Think about this choice twice! Can't believe this..

The only reason I started being on polyvore was for the style advice section and now that it's shutting down I don't really think that I have a good reason to stay .. I like making sets but I REALLY love giving my piece of mind and helping people .so if you could at least consider not shutting it down ..

suede said...

well to be honesty, i started using polyvore years ago when there wasn't even an ask section and honestly, i don't really use it? i guess, in a way, i don't really need it. i joined 3 years ago and just from making sets and looking at people's sets, my style have involved into what it is today and it still is so i'm not bummed at all.

however, it doesn't really make sense to close the ask section down considering the amount of negative responses. though i think i understand the few reasons as to why you might want to shut it down.

A) it being the only reason someone joins that could create lots of blank accounts?
B) you're trying to stay true to the initial point of polyvore, which is set making for self-expression

though i get those reasons (if they are the reasons), from a business point of view, it doesn't make a lot of sense. you're losing a lot of people. from a non-business point of view, great. i love polyvore going back to its initial purpose.

on a positive note, i honestly don't see the problem with the new polyvore updates? i think it's super fabulous and that set making has become way easier than it was 3 years ago. i think people should give polyvore actual credit for these updates. lots of people might leave but hey, you've hooked some people for life and there will be more to who discover polyvore. last week my lecturer gave us an assignment (i study fashion marketing) and for the subject buying principles, he's making us pretend buy collections. when we asked how we should present, he said through polyvore. i was like 'awww yissssssss'.

keep up the good work, guys. just give the people your actual reason for shutting it down. x

Once the ask section closes down, you'll be asking yourselves why you decided to do this when the majority of polyvore users stop visiting this site.
It's really unfortunate to see such potential go to waste.

I only really come on polyvore to use the style advice section, it's really useful and the only place on the net where you can actually get proper outfit ideas that are wearable and affordable, I really hope you change your minds and keep this open. I will not be using Polyvore as often because of this portion of the site closing down. It is what made you to be the #1 fashion community, but the number of users is going to go down very quickly. I do not see how this is helping Polyvore or its community. I saw absolutely no problem in the website or this portion of the website. Please reconsider keeping it up

I discovered polyvore by the style advice section and i JUST made an account because i visit it frequently. i am SO disappointed and frankly not impressed with your decision. im deleting my account. thanks.

The only reason I come on Polyvore is to ask style questions or answer them. I'm sure there will be a great decline in visitors. I hope you will see that and don't shut it down.

Wow. it's overwhelming and sad to see the anger and vitriol in the comments.

As someone who seldom, if ever, used the Style Advice/Ask section, I'm one of the smaller percentage of PV members who feel mostly indifferent to its termination. I do, however, sympathize with the disappointment felt by the users who relied heavily on it. Still, I wish people would be more respectful with the way they express their opinions.

Hope the PV staff can reach a peaceful resolution with this issue. Good luck!

Just looked at the update. You really think the best thing for the community is to shut the ask section down? Remember that in a year whenever the decline is visitors is so sharp that you'll have to shut the site down.

Anonymous said...

'We care about you, the community, very much and that's why closing the Style Advice section was a hard decision for us, too. Ultimately, we decided this was the best for the whole Polyvore community.'

-How exactly is it 'best for the whole Polyvore community' when you are deleting an obviously much loved part of the site? I doubt many people on Polyvore think that this has been a move that was for the community or for the best when you consider the reaction it has gotten.

Style Advice and Ask section is the best part of polyvore. I'm afraid you will be losing many many polyvore users from this site, myself being one of them. I think we all deserve to know why you are closing this part down, and frankly, it's a terrible decision.

ashleyshantelle said...

Polyvore, I am very upset by this decision. As someone who is PLUS SIZE, this was the ONLY section of your site where a girl could get advice and extremely good style tips to fit your exact body type. Most of the sets on the website feature stick thin models and outfits that a plus size girl could NEVER wear. I am extremely disappointed that this is your decision. You are removing the only place for plus size girls who love there curves to get advice and style. I find this very shameful and frankly, I am offended. Please at least give us plus size girls a real answer. The current one has no real explanation of why you are doing this.

Anonymous said...

Thats the only section I use and find fun. I probably will not be visiting Polyvore once this shuts down. I think that you are making the wrong decision. Please don't shut down the ASK section. You will loose many of your users in the process.

Well, I'll be honest. The style advice section was the only thing I really, really liked on Polyvore. My account will be deleted as soon as it's gone.

Anonymous said...

This is really quite a shame, because the main reason I visit polyvore is for the ask section. I love seeing advice on outfits that are similar to mine, so I can create everyday looks. Not many other sites have this feature, and I really think you should reconsider before shutting this down.

YOU WILL BE USING TOO MANY USERS. THE ONLY REASON I SIGNED UP FOR POLYVORE WAS THE STYLE ADVICE. I NEED ADVICE BECAUSE I MYSELF CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THINGS TO WEAR. YOU WILL LOOSE SO MANY USERS IT WON'T EVEN BE FUNNY. YOU WILL REGRET EVERYTHING. STOP BEING SUCH DOUCHES.

Anonymous said...

This is horrible!!! I only use this site for the advice. There is no point in using this site anymore; You will find you lose a lot of visiters to the site!!!

Anonymous said...

This is the WORST decision you will ever make!!! You say that you "haven't paid much attention to this bit of the site" so you close it down... explain that then!?

Anonymous said...

This is just an observation from a disinterested user: This decision truly seems to be in direct conflict with your company's basic values as stated by Polyvore:

"We value smart people who have a strong, innate desire to make an impact, who constantly search for clever ways to make things better and who step up to solve problems (even those they don't own). Our open culture, flat organization and collaborative environment empower our team to make a difference."

Are you not essentially taking that same empowerment away from your users? Is this advice section somehow affecting your "90% gross margins, and our revenues are nearly tripling year over year?"

I have to agree with your users' statements that this decision makes no sense with the limited information you have provided.

I understand you probably have your reasons for shutting down the advice column but I would like you to know that it will be missed.

I love this part of Polyvore. I have fun helping others and the same time gaining followers. I always try my best to find the right outfit for them.
You most keep this because some people come to this site for advice in fashion or beauty. Not only fashionistas.
I used too for myself, when I need to decide what to wear.
Come on !

Anonymous said...

as someone stated before, I feel that polyvore doesn't care about our corner of women who aren't all double zero's. By taking away the only area to reach out to other women with similar body types, you are effectively saying we don't matter. Unless you are stick thin, we don't care that you need more advice than the average person. Polyvore has joined the media in hating on plus size bodies and the fashion challenges that come with it by closing ask. I am sure it won't be too long before the media gets onto this story.

"We care about you, the community, very much and that's why closing the Style Advice section was a hard decision for us, too. Ultimately, we decided this was the best for the whole Polyvore community."

REALLY? You want the best for the community, so you decide to SHUT DOWN the style advice section... Because you think that's what the COMMUNITY wants?
Way to NOT listen to your members. Because that's what you would do if you wanted the best for the community.

Anonymous said...

I agree with almost everyone who has commented, the advice section was the best part for me and the section I used the most, if not only section I did use. I agree where I don't see the valid reason for deleting this section but no worries, best of luck to those who stick with Polyvore. I am, however, going to look elsewhere for style advice & etc.

Anonymous said...

Why would you remove the Style Advice/Ask section when no other style website has such an accessible, friendly feature?

I am disappointed by the decision and frustrated by the lack of detail given by Lydia for the reason for shutting it down. Would it be difficult to appoint a moderator or invest some attention into this section of the website? I am sure community support and the comments here more than justify its continuation.

The search function does not meet all my style needs. Sometimes I need fresh ideas, and Yahoo Answers or Quora are far too text-based to be any use for me. On the Ask section, I can post photographs with direct links to products, ratings and saves from other users, at a huge array of price points and sources.

Please reconsider this decision. I don't need to put together different fashion spreads as much as I need ideas and suggestions from other users, or I want to contribute to the same. Searching for specific items not only increases my own use of the site, it has contributed to actual purchases.

Anonymous said...

I have mixed feelings... Some people said some not nice words on that section, and I am sort of glad that they are shutting this down, however don't get me wrong. I used this part and I thought it was very useful.

This is a ridiculous decision. IF you care about the community so much, why are you shutting down a major portion of it? And then not giving a credible reason for closing the section?

I mean, I'm not going to stop using Polyvore, but you should really be aware of what a STUPID and POORLY THOUGHT-OUT decision this is, and how fast traffic to your site will probably go down.

I hope this is only temporary, because I really enjoy that section.

Like everyone else, I believe you are making a mistake by closing the Style Advice section. Most of us need help with outfits for special occasions, school, season wear, etc. It's a big part of Polyvore and it helps people interact with each other better. I believe you guys do make some good changes but this is just not one of them, please do not delete this section if you do not want everyone to start leaving this site.

Anonymous said...

Bad move, that part of Polyvore was honestly the most useful thing on the internet...i can't promise that you'll see me using Polyvore as much now.

Anonymous said...

Guys, you are thinking about this all wrong.

This website is not provided for free to us because the owners want us to have fun- it's a platform for Ads.

The costs for a site like this is incredibly expensive. The site hosts so many images and so many sets that I'm surprised it rarely goes down.

Why do they do it? Because the companies that sponsor contests give a lot of money to the polyvore user-base to be on the front page. Same with the companies that do ads. The more people who use the site, the more money the creators make, and the more you buy from sponsored companies, the more they make.

I'm guessing that

A) The ask section takes up a lot of bandwidth and server space, so it costs a lot to run
B) The ask section often involves people recommending products that are less expensive alternatives to products promoted in ads and contests.
C)The ask section requires a lot of moderation since people frequently break the rules and ask questions that aren't related to fashion

Plus, the ask section has always been clunky, with the same question often asked many times because there's not a good way to look up older relevant questions.

It costs more to run than it makes, so they're getting rid of it and getting back to the things that actually make them money. It's not rocket science, people.

Anonymous said...

Guys i think we should like protest because obviously nobody would like the ask section to close. Lets try to get #keepaskup trending on twitter. and tweet it to @polyvore

Anonymous said...

I don't understand why your stopping this section. Is there a reason? Please tell us if there is. I find most of my favorite sets and get inspired to make my own through the advice section. On Yahoo, so many people just troll and don't take the question seriously, or it takes forever to get an answer.

"We reached it after realizing that we haven't been able to give that section of the site and its participants the attention or recognition they deserve."

Thank you for your thoughts with that, but the section has remainded clean, usefull, and growing. If you want to focus on improving the site, go for it, you'll have our support. However, closing the best part is not going to help you grow or help us any. You don't need to give us alot of attention in that section. If the section has become a problem for some reason, that's one thing, but please tell us if there is- maybe we can help with it. But if there is no reason, there is no excuse to close done the best and most popular part of the section.

Anonymous said...

If, like the previous poster suggested, the only reason you're closing the ask section is because you don't make money off of it then that's a real shame and I for one am going to be done with polyvore as of tomorrow.

This is a bad, bad idea. No amount of apologizing or reason will convince all of the users that this is a good idea. Asking advice for outfits is the only reason I used Polyvore. This is a mistake, and just because you don't pay enough attention to the Ask section doesn't mean your users don't. My visits to Polyvore will not be as frequent and I am sad to say will probably stop with the closing of this section. Listen to your users... you are losing us.

Anonymous said...

I can't put together my breakfast, let alone an outfit! I came to the ask section almost everyday to ask for fashion advice, and that's the only reason I remain on Polyvore. Not because of your stupid shop, or sets, but because of the section you are closing down. WHAT THE HELL??? If your "valid reason" is you're lazy, I can agree with that. You're wrecking the best fashion site there ever was.

I wont be visiting Polyvore anymore.

Anonymous said...

I've had enough.

Take away the ask section, and what do you have? A wannabee site that doesn't listen to it's members and couldn't give a fuck about what they thought. When you remove this section, you are removing its sense of community. I really did enjoy helping others.

I'm done with this shit hole site. Goodbye Polyvore, I won't miss you.

Polyvore! Are you reading these comments??? Or are your heads still up your ass. 557 comments, and only about 4 of them like this idea. The others (like me) HATE IT! So you "doing the best for the Polyvore community" is just a load of bull shit. I wonder how many members you will have left in the "community" when EVERYONE who doesn't want this to go, leaves? About the 4 that wanted this to happen. Please polyvore! I didn't want to leave like this! I didn't want to leave at all!!! but you leave me no choice. I'm GLAD to say that by the time Jan 31 comes, I wont be here.

Please Polyvore! Don't do this to a great site! I want you to realize that you are ruining the site! Please Polyvore! Don't do this! We beg you!

A very annoyed Polyvore user said...

Dear Polyvore team,

I don't mean to sound rude, but have you read all the comments on your Blog? 560 odd, and 99.9% of those are against this matter. Seems like you need to wake up and face the angry Polyvore users, before they're gone.

Anonymous said...

Polyvore is a business first and foremost, and their objective is to make money. If the Advice section made a lot of money, this wouldn't have happened. But it seems so many people who have commented thus far say they're only here for the Advice section. They do not enter contests or buy expensive things or in any way contribute to the revenue of the site. So clearly the section is its own little silo and doesn't integrate into the central purpose and business model of the rest of Polyvore (which is about Sets). That's likely why it's getting shut down.

Anonymous said...

I happened upon this site by chance because of this style section which I thought was fantastic. This, in turn, led me to explore the rest of the site. However, the reason I kept coming back and adding to your hits was for the style section. I'm sorry to see it go and I'm sorry that I no longer have much of a reason to return to Polyvore. It is clear from the influx of comments that are also along this vain of thought that I am not alone. I expect that your site traffic will, regrettably, take a substantial hit. Hopefully you will see the benefits of the style section and reinstate it in the future.

First of all, There is really no need to be rude. I know that this section being deleted may anger people, and I totally agree with all of you! I found Polyvore through it's FANTASTIC style section, and joined up straight away. Yes, I am really annoyed and saddened by this, but what can we do? Swearing at Polyvore won't make a difference. C'mon guys. Learn some respect.

And Polyvore staff? This is probably the worst decision you have ever made, and you've made some really bad decisions. C'mon Polyvore! This decision is downgrading your site from A-mazing to D-isappoing. Hopefully you will see that this impacts your site in the wrong way, and not at all how you wanted it to. I would really like for you to rethink this decision, and don't get rid of this section, and if you do, at least archive the questions for other fashionistas in the future to see.

I hope this comment changed your mind and helped you to see our perspective. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

I totally get and appreciate this user's comment, however I don't see how shutting down the most attractive/used part of the website will encourage buying "expensive things". It is a flawed strategy that has thus far lost a lot of users the site once had, and will likely lose more once it officially closes.

Number of sets I've made: 234
Number of times I have used the Ask section: 477

I think a lot of regular contributors to the Ask section would agree that it is so much more than just a part of your website. It's an interactive game where we can help inspire others and answer questions no ordinary person could find anywhere else. I am extremely disappointed that this section will be going away. You have made a poor poor decision and I hope you realize the impact it has made on the users of this site. As others have said, this will vastly effect the amount of time I spend on Polyvore, which will likely result in my absence entirely. There are so many young girls who don't have style role models and turn to the site for advice. And as you are in the business of fashion, you must know that it is more than just clothing and items put together, but that dress and style are means of growing ones expressionism. By deleting a safe place for others to be vulnerable and ask for help with such things is truly absurd in my opinion.

Getting rid of ASK would be an incredibly asinine move on Polyvore's part. We are all fashionistas who want our opinions and styles to be seen and heard, but by eliminating ASK, the potential of reaching other fashionistas is being dramatically decreased, if not almost completely taken away. Polyvore is claiming that the reason behind eliminating ASK is because users are not getting the recognition that they deserve. Now, without ASK, the only way that a user will now receive recognition for their creativity and work is if another user stumbles upon their profile. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but this is basically being left to CHANCE, rather than enabling users with the power to make their fashion opinions and ideas seen and heard. Polyvore, to me, is a website that does exactly what was aforementioned: enables users with the power to show the world their inner fashionista. By getting rid of ASK, Polyvore would be going against what the website is truly set up for. Fashion, in essence, is taking style from others, and making it into your own. So, without ASK, how are we supposed to take the advice from others, if we can't voice our questions?

Anonymous said...

Maybe if you people hadn't done the exact same screaming drama fit every time Polyvore so much as adjusts their site scheme, this would be a little more credible.

You all threatened to walk after the site redesign, you threatened to walk after half a dozen other "outrageous" "unfair" "pointless" changes, and yet you're still here to howl about this one.

Polyvore was doing just fine before the advice feature came online, and I imagine it'll do fine when it's gone, even if half of you actually put your money where your mouth is and quit. Then maybe those of us who've been sitting here all along using the MAIN feature of polyvore can get some peace.

Like many others have stated, this is a big mistake on your guy's part.

While you guys believe that it is the best thing in the end because it will somehow sway people to making more sets, you're disregarding the people on this site who do NOT make sets and solely enjoy giving advice.

I created an account on Polyvore just to give advice and get advice because I thought that portion of the website was more for me: Someone who was just looking for personal advice for everyday outfits and getting inspiration for more specific scenarios like weddings, funerals and parties.

I will no longer be visiting this site and it's such a shame considering I used it every day.

You are taking away a part of the community by doing this.

Why? Everyone here is upset that it will close down. This section is very helpful for everyone on here. People are even deciding to leave because this section is shutting down. Please reconsider this. From what I've read in the comments so far, everyone loves this section.

In all honestly, closing the Style Ask Section is possibly one of the worst things Polyvore could do.
I know that many, many people purely use Polyvore for the Style Ask Section and by closing it, this site will lose a lot of users.
Myself, i shall be greatly disappointed as i really enjoyed answering and asking questions as it had a lovely community vibe and was so easy to use and so specific in giving help.
Closing the Ask Section will certainly change the dynamic of Polyvore and not in a good way. At all.
Bad, bad decision.

You can still interact by commenting and giving advice to each other by asking for opinions of your followers and friends. All you need to do is leave comments on sets if you really are looking for advice that's what I do.I do like the interaction of the style and ask section but its not the main feature of Polyvore and never has been. You will not find a more genuine bunch of hard working people than those of the Polyvore team,if you leave them that's your choice.

I just joined this site and thought it would be absolutely amazing to be able to help others with advice and others help me, but now that wont be happening for much longer....

I can't believe they're doing this. The ask/advice section is the best part of this site. I always go to Polyvore when I need fashion advice. This is ridiculous.

There is no point in visiting this site anymore and I will delete my account.

Okay, Polyvore. Just know you're losing thousands of devoted fashionsistas. Sorry.

p.s. YOU SUCK

You're kidding, right??

Please tell me this is a joke. An early April fools?

Seriously Polyvore! Nearly 600 comments, and I've only seen around 4 who like this decision. If you count 4 members as a community, then you are sadly mistaken.

Thankyou for being such an awesome site, but i'll be deleting my account come Jan 31, as I no longer have any use for this site.

Most fun thing to do on Polyvore hands down.
Disappointed to see this section go, and probably won't be visiting the site very often without it.

Lame.

DON'T CLOSE IT said...

Polyvore,

Don't close the advice section, I come here for advice all the time. I will probably stop using the site. I love to give advice and you have no valid reason to close the advice section.

Thank you,

For nothing,
