Hashtags on Polyvore

Dear Polyvore Community,

You can now add hashtags in set and collection descriptions as well as in comments! Hashtags are a great way to:

Join a topic:
Use hashtags to add your sets and collections to a particular topic or theme. The theme can be ongoing like #WorkWear or a one time special event like #MetGala.

Discover new styles:
Click on a hashtag to discover new styles. For example, check out #SimpleOutfits or #Casual.

New: Hashtags on Polyvore

We hope you enjoy hashtags!

Love,
The Polyvore Team

..Seriously?

SERIOUSLY? This is going to be so overused by child twitter users. GAH.

I'm sorry, but just no. I'd rather have regular tags for the sets than this. This is not TWITTER! I came here to do art and fashion and to avoid these twitter hashtags. It seems like the more you change this the more this site is becoming a social network.

I want tags back (I've tagged all my sets appropriately only to find all the hard work I did is gone now because of this)

I'm sorry but I agree with two of the comments. Polyvore is slowly becoming a place where people only talk and stuff. not really about fashion. This is a bit to much because hashtags belong on twitter not a fashion filled website.

Sounds awesome..I'll be "Hashing" away..oxoxo

Love you guys..oxox

I agree, this isn't Twitter, it's just gonna mess things up! So now everything I have tagged is now useless?? Really? Change it back to normal please!!

merrielainsley said...

I think this is pretty cool, but I think we should use the regular tags more than this... Hashtags are more for twitter .

Ms. P.A. Moore said...

I don't get it. Why not just add a description in the labels section? *shrug*

Emily (emily-ann-01) said...

I like this idea, kind of. But please, give us back out old tags that were able to use. It's really a good update, and I wouldn't mind if it was still be used, but I really want the old tags back, too! Please think about this!

EMily! (: ♥

1. We are not twitter 2. We are not tumblr 3. unnescary amounts of extra coding therefore could possibly burn your database out in worst case scenario.
I agree with Gothic Phoenix. Yes, in a sense we have social networking but to a much less broad extent which is good.
I would like to find things so much easier- like actually tagging things because a ton of things are not tagged! (aka- photos, HOMESTUCK) for example.
I also agree with the anon below gothic phoenix. Literally, I have seen less of what I used to love- the fashion and the hard work. If we want to hashtag it on twitter or tumblr or other spots, that's fine! Just not here... and if you messed my tags up I will be unhappy! :(

All these people do on this site is complain complain complain! It's free! Do you're art and fashion stuff or go away! Polyvore has to stay relevant and current to keep getting backers which keeps the site going for all of you! By adding hashtags it's easier for clothing companies etc to get their stuff found, used and sold. How do you think this company can keep this site up and do amazing contests? Hastags are the easiest way and this is why every social network site uses them. I think this is a great idea! This is a great idea to hashtag designers and clothing companies. This is a great idea to promote more for them so they can continue to give Poly great prizes, collaborate and support our favorite site! I love this idea!

Anonymous said...

In someways it's great idea but it may be harder for people to promote their sets now since I would't like to use an overload of hashtagging.

UGH!! All my tags are GONE!! I don't think I';; mind the hashtags but PLEASE PLEASE Bring back the TAGS

Anonymous said...

•••• Why on Earth would Polyvore do this to me, my probably millions of tags are POOF gone! You can't even use the tag feature now, WTF? Just those stupid hashtags...this is fashion not mindless rantings like Twitter! PLZ stop this insanity & bring the tags back!!

TiffYG2133 said...

last post I meant to type *I'll*

> I just noticed that all the hashtags I make/use appear on my profile page, what happens when I accumulate more & more hashtags? The entire side of my profile will be filled (DO NOT WANT) a suggestion maybe in the settings make it an option to show or not show your hashtags on your profile much like you can do with contest wins, groups, etc.

P.S. Did I mention I would like regular tags back as well :)

Amazing, thank you :)

I don't mind them. I can understand why people are annoyed that all their tags are lost (as someone with over 500 sets, I can assure you that it bugs me too). However, hashtags are essentially the exact same thing. I don't understand why people are so annoyed with them, people can use the exact same tags they used before, it's no different other than the literal hash mark in front of the tag. I'm sure the only reason polyvore switched over is because of the abundance of hashtags on other sites, it makes it a lot easier for people to learn how to use them (especially new members).

Anonymous said...

@metalheavy that's true but they should have had the hashtags more like the tags, did you read Tiffyg2133's post, the hashtags are going to fill up the pages, they won't be bad when it's been tweaked & reworked but until then. I don't like them!

Anonymous said...

I honestly don't like this. It just seems like Twitter and I liked the way you had it before. It was alot easier to find the stuff you needed then.

AshleyPG said...

I do not like hash tagging at all. i prefered thelast type of tagging to be honest. in fact, on my last set, after tagging some things about the set i but #i #hate #tagging #like #this, because i do.

Anonymous said...

oh polyvore, we're going to have to have words again! why is everyone saying this is so cool? I've lost what must be THOUSANDS of tags! why not just give us both so we can hashtag if we want, or if we'd rather keep this as a fashion/art site and NOT twitter/tumblr/facebook/instagram we can keep our normal tags?
and can we please PLEASE have a doll category?

Anonymous said...

Not that you guys even read this, but what is the point of having hastags? Or more importantly what was the point of having fifty thousand likes on my homepage when all I want to see is sets? I love this site, I really do, but the things you guys do make no sense. Not to mention when we have a different opinion about it you don't bother to respond or think about making changes that are long overdue. Hastags not being g one of them for one.

Polyvore, you just get awesomer by the day!!! :D
Amazing update...really excited to try out!

Anonymous said...

I never use hashtags and in a way I don't really understand them...

Whatever though

Anonymous said...

PLEASE STOP. NO. JUST NO. Polyvore is NOT social networking and it shouldn't try to be. We do not come here for hashtagging or any of the other annoying stuff from facebook, twitter, tumblr, instagram, etc. Keep this site fashion/art-centered!!! Bring back our tags and undo this stupid update- it's not an improvement!

Lily said...

NO. Bring the normal tags back.

Anonymous said...

I just love using these :)

Wow. Seems like a great idea, but these tags seem more for twitter. It feels like Polyvore is becoming less of a fashion filled website.

Anonymous said...

I do not like this new feature-as stated above polyvore is not twitter. Let's keep it the fashion & art site that it has been and the reason why we joined in the 1st place!

Anonymous said...

CHANGE BACK TO OLD TAGS NOW PLEASE - HASHTAGS ARE LAME!!!

Jacqueline said...

Well, I'm guess I'm too new..because I did not know about tagging at all...so I'll have to try out this new feature. Thanks for the alert.

I prefer the old tags, since the pop-up list made it very clear what others were tagging things as. The problem with hashtags is this:

#3quartersleeves
#3/4sleeves
#threequartersleeves
#elbowsleeves
etc.

Those are all DIFFERENT hashtags, and will show up differently. To ensure the best search coverage, a diligent user has to use all of them, instead of just looking at the pop-up/auto-complete menu in the old tag system to see what the most-used (3/4 sleeves) search term was.

I don't really care, personally, because I rely on groups and friends for views, and not random searches. I'm also not one of the users who is very active and trying to get more views. But I see this as a problem, and really less optimal from the general perspective of a tech-head person.

Hashtags work on an app like Twitter and Instagram because they function to create a community around the hashtag. They become inside jokes and conversational methods. I don't see how that suits the type of community Polyvore (I sincerely hope!) is trying to be, which is less of an "inside joke" place, and more of a place that people can find inspiration.

I'm sure it will work itself out either way. I just don't see why this was a prioritized change. The all-visual interface is becoming more appealing these days around the app-world, I get it, but jeez... let us use our words... Not everything has to be Twitter or Instagram, some places can have MORE information.

I used a bunch of hastags for my latest set, but the set didn't show up when I later clicked on any of those categories. Does anyone know why this would be the case? Is there a limit to the number of hastags one can assign to their set?

Jane Browm said...

Never knew what Hashtags were until today, thanks for the education

WHY ARE THESE STUPID THINGS STILL BEING USED - DON'T YOU PEOPLE READ COMMENT & TAKE INTO ACCOUNT PEOPLE OPINIONS? THIS IS NOT TWITTER & THEY WAY YOU IGNORE THE MAJORITY IT'S MORE LIKE A GOVERNMENT NOT A FASHION SITE!! THE CHANGES SUCK!!!

Anonymous said...

BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! BRING BACK REGULAR TAGS!! morbid-octobur said...

It's actually quite bothersome. It's harder to find things now because we're not able to tag specifically what it is we're making, which then limits the stuff you can search for. I really don't like not being able to tag my sets now. Having both would be the best of both worlds, but having tags is much more wanted.

pieridae said...

I have to agree with so many others! I miss my old tags, and don't have time to go thru and add hashtags to everything. Polyvore is a hit because it is unique and special - this just seems like jumping on the Twitter bandwagon.

Anonymous said...

I do not get the new hashtags..why are some highlighted? Do we just add like on the previous way- #gypsyskirt, patentpumps, #diamond&labroditeearrings, etc.??? If I added/listed all the items like I did before it creates a very long list.
