Beauty 101: BB + CC Creams

It’s summer, so it’s the perfect time to give your foundation a rest and switch to a lighter BB or CC cream. Have you tried one of these funny-sounding formulas yet? If the weird title has turned you off, it’s time to give them a second look because these do-it-all potions really are perfect for warmer weather.

BB creams: BB stands for beauty balm or blemish balm, depending on who you talk to. If you live in Europe or Asia you’re probably already familiar with it but in the U.S., it's still gaining traction.

BB creams are heavier in texture than a tinted sunscreen or lotion but they are typically lighter than foundation. They have become popular because they do many things at once. These multitasking creams often contain sunscreen, antioxidants, moisturizers (like hyaluronic acid) and mineral pigments to cover lines and wrinkles. So, they do a lot more than your typical tinted moisturizer!

Some popular products to check out:

  • Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream, $12
  • Dr. Brandt Signature Flexitone BB Cream SPF 30, $39
  • Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35, $44

  • CC creams: CC stands for color correcting. If you have some redness or dullness, a CC cream may be for you. It's pretty darn close to its sister, the BB cream, but the big difference is the CC version will even out your skin tone. It is also lighter to the touch.

Some popular products to check out:

  • Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF 30, $35
  • Dr. Jart CC Essence Balm, $42

  • Some women (including a few at Polyvore!) swear by BB creams and have completely given up using foundation. Pick up a BB or CC cream and try it this weekend! If you’re already a fan, comment on your go-to formula and share it with the rest of the Polyvore community.
