Polyvore + Yahoo = ♥♥

Dear Polyvore Community,

I’m excited to share some big news with you: Polyvore has agreed to be acquired by Yahoo!
The last 8 years have been an incredible journey for Polyvore.

We couldn’t have done it without you, the amazing Polyvore community!

You are the creators who breathe life & color into Polyvore’s blank canvas. You are the trendsetters who leave your stamp on the world of style, making it more democratic, inclusive and positive.

Without you, there would be no Polyvore. Thank you for all your support over the years.

Polyvore started out in 2007 as the brainchild of 3 ex-Yahoo engineers, Jianing Hu, Guangwei Yuan and Pasha Sadri. I was an early Polyvore user who wrote in with compliments and complaints, got hired as the first product manager, and eventually became CEO. My heart started with the Polyvore community and will always remain there.

Going forward, Polyvore will still be the same Polyvore that you love, but we’ll have more resources to make it even bigger & better. Our mission of empowering people to feel good about their style will stay the same. We’ll continue to add cool new product features and roll out new perks for top members. We’ve accomplished a lot on our own, but together with Yahoo we can take Polyvore to its fullest potential.

Love,
Jess Lee, Co-Founder and CEO, Polyvore

Please note the transaction is subject to satisfying customary closing conditions

We love getting love letters
We keep all your love letters. Our office is decorated primarily with your sets and other artwork!

One of our first ever mentions in a fashion magazine. I think this was Lucky Mag. We were so excited!!

Fast forward to today, and we have Polyvore members *starring* in fashion magazine shoots. How far we’ve come : )

Had an awesome time today hanging out with Polyvore community members at our meetup event! We are so lucky to have such amazing, talented, supportive, kind users. It was inspiring to hear their stories. #greatday
Much love always to the Polyvore community.

Having much experience with Yahoo and many disappointments there, I am not thrilled about this. You have been such a wonderful team and I know Yahoo will make changes that won't be for the better. I am sorry to see this happen but with the best for all of you!

This is so lovely to hear! I am trilled to be apart of it all. One day that will be me starring in a magazine showcasing my wonderful Polyvore styles. This site has created a gateway into the fashion world having access to all the amazing designers at the click of a button. Thank you for creating an idea to help fashion lovers share their idea!

Good god, am I the only person who finds this scary? This must be great for the company and it's employees, but I am incredibly apprehensive about changes Yahoo will make (tumblr, being an example of yahoo aquiring a website and royally ruining it.), and I am especially concerned about the way the voices of polyvore users being impacted by this change--that is, forgotten.I have personally been to the office, and have expressed my critiques over changes in the past, and, more so in the early years than now, the Mountain View team has always been responsive. There have been changes made recently that I have also sent messages about, not only with my suggestions, but with evidence that this opinion is of the community at large (example being the changes made to the descriptions in collections and their visibility, or lack there of.)--but the team disregarded that. I am sure there were much bigger things to worry about. I have been an active member of this website for nearly 8 years. I have seen polyvore through a lot of changes--more than probably most the people who currently work there. I don't know how much more of it I can take before the features that I think make it great are compromised (I have, for instance, an overwhelming fear that the desktop version of the editor will be phased out--I loathe using the mobile app to make sets.). These are my fears and complains. I don't know how much power the company will have over yahoo any more. Best of luck to the company, though.

There are some awesome things that can be done to make the website more user friendly. For example:

When you edit a set, make the edited version show on the contest page. Right now it is showing the original set, not the edited set.

Be able to choose your liked items as sets, collections and items to get rid of the infinite scrolling

Have an option to turn your "polycloset" background black so you can see all your invisible items when creating a set. (omg pleeeaaassseeee).

This is @kearalachelle :)

Well...it was fun while it lasted. I wish you all the best. Hope Google doesn't mess up a good thing.

Why aren't more people excited..? The merger will bring change, and probably a better site. Better to be acquired than to turn it into a pay-per site, or go down altogether. I would like to say that Keara @kearalachelle has spot-on observations and requests-ones that I have often longed to see made. Let's stay positive in the face of change, and then we can assess the platform then.

Thanks,
Margaret @jcmp

I am Happy for those of polyvore that will prosper from this 'union' but now i am worried about the security of the sight, as well as the quality of the future of polyvore since yahoo has a bad reputation for crappy security and worse customer service in all endevors i have ever had in dealing with them in the past. i refuse to even have a yahoo email, since most of my freinds have had theres hacked over the years for spam boters to use.

I love Polyvore and its been a joy in my life to create and learn about fashion at this late date. but I share the concern of a few here that change like this is never for the best. Always something is lost. I have enjoyed these years immensely and appreciate all that polyvore has given us, but am not confident that the polyvore I love will continue to be.

House of Hauteness said...

Having had experience with corporate mergers, I understand and share some of the concerns previously stated. However, I will always support Polyvore, a company regardless of what the future holds, has given me endless opportunities. Congratulations and thank you for giving us this wonderful platform to express our creativity for so many years!

Hi Poly & Community... I am both excited and scared at the moment. I see others concerns and I feel you on some points but I am also thrilled for the company who feels this is the best move for them, the community and their employees. I really hope nothing but the best for Polyvore. Poly has this mom and pop feel to it where you always felt welcomed and every experience was really personal and unique to you. I really hope you guys maintain that feel but with more and cooler opportunities that you can only get by mingling with corporate America. I feel like if the message stays the same then this could only make Polyvore better. So I will hold off judgement and just say Congrats and I can't wait to see how everything unfolds. Thanks for the past 5 years and cheers to more. I'm not going anywhere.

Change is always scary but it doesn't have to be negative, hopefully this venture will make Polyvore even better than it is and make it possible for improvements to be made for the betterment of our collective Polyvore experience. I personally love and appreciate Polyvore for being an outlet for my creativity and for being such a fun and exciting part of my life. I look forward to a bigger, better and even more exciting Polyvore experience. Congrats!!

Congratulations on this new venture for Polyvore. Obviously, such a buyout means that Polyvore is a much coveted company if a Yahoo wants to buy it! And obviously Polyvore has been a very successful company, loyal to its members, always there to help us, and had such a meteoric rise, that I can see why it was poised to be looked at by serious companies.

However, as a member on the Artist side, I am wondering what will happen to the Polyvore artists. Will we still be able to create art sets? Will Yahoo be too concerned with copyright issues? ;only concerned with the fashion side, i.e. selling fashion? There are other questions I have, but will not burden you with all my concerns.

Thank you for listening & Thank you for the most wonderful, creative 8 years working with Polyvore and it's staff and the opportunity to meet some very wonderful friends ~ Ellen Norton (Hilart)

Well Polyvore here's to you and your success. Yahoo here's to you and continued success. I have enjoyed both sites and hope to continue, artists have an outlet here on Polyvore many are brain injured and some have neurological conditions and the set making in the artistic expression venue has done a lot, let me stress that again, A LOT of people good. I hope you consider this a factor if there are any changes to be made in your programming.

Thank you for your consideration,

Congratulations Polyvore team! You deserve every success. Looking forward to better things with the Yahoo acquisition. I think this site makes the online shopping experience more fun, interactive, and more organized given that shopping choices for clothes and home decor can be overwhelming sometimes. I currently live now in the NYC. Should you need inputs in focus group discussions, I would be happy to provide them :)

I congratulate everyone on the team, as this means expansion and more profitability for the business. I can even live with ads; I know they're often necessary to pay for all we don't see (servers, salaries, and the like). My big concern is for security. I had to delete my Yahoo account because I was hit by a hacker. They got my Facebook (which I used the address for) and it was a royal mess. I hope they're more concerned with security than I've seen them be in the past. I also hope the art side won't be adversely affected. (I mostly stick to the fashion side, but always appreciate the artists' creativity.)

Congratulations to all. I am certain you have worked hard to realize this dream.
My greatest hope is that Yahoo will bring some much needed oversight and accountability. Polyvore grew beyond it's administrative capacity long ago.

I have been a member for six years. I enjoyed the artistic and design elements very much.

However I also encountered rampant deceit, secrecy (never knowing who is employed by Polyvore and who is selling merchandise), and due to an unsecured platform with no encryption, members who have collected my personal data and tracked me unscrupulously.
On that note, I have had to replace multiple laptops, tablets, and engage technicians on a regular basis.

The Global element of this site has brought people who are financially desperate and not above breaching the rules of conduct (and perhaps engaging in unlawful behavior.)
There appear to be an inner circle who control everything (from who wins prizes to top daily sets within differing categories.) Members are allowed to have as many accounts as they like, with no method of controlling behavior (I question the accuracy of the usage data and demographic statistics reported by Polyvore.)

The complaint process is inadequate, few members have expressed satisfaction with the results.

I am continuously surprised that large, well established brands and designers are satisfied knowing their reputation could be marred by the less ethical small organizations from parts unknown.

Looking forward to significant changes!

Congratulations Polyvore and his team.Only was worried with Yahoo, it will not have problems with copyright or if we, members who do not do fashion sets will continue to be able to create our art sets.Thank you Polyvore and I wish much success to you!

Im so excited about whats to come. So happy for Polyvore.

Polyvore has been a daily joy in my life, and I am terrified of what Yahoo is going to do to it. If it becomes mobile only, I won't be able to come back because I don't have a phone. If it becomes a haven for pop-ups and side ads, my computer won't be able to handle it. I also share the same fears as a lot of the other loyal fans of this site. I hope that there is a reassurance coming.

I come not to talk about what has been posted. And yes, try to find a solution to my problem. So here we go: I accidentally delete the email you used to sign up on Polyvore. They can curse me, because I am so stupid. Anyway, continuing: I also forgot the password, and how the e-mail there is practically no more, I can not change the password. I'm virtually no access to the account, and I am very sad to know that I will lose count. I do not want to have to start over from scratch, and a lot of work, I'm very discouraged to do so. Anyway, I hope someone can help me. Thanks.
